Martin will be placed on the NFI (Non-Football Illness List)
Abramson of the PBP got wind of this and it is being released by the Fins within the hour

I don't know how I feel about this. I rather not have there be any more trouble. I feel doing this is going to make it uglier.

and I have it on a pretty good source...they will attempt to recover 500k of his signing bonus.

Awesome. The talking heads have already made up their minds about the fault of the organization. Time to fight back.

I'm not sure if this is hardball.
What else were they supposed to do? The guy voluntarily left the facility and told them he doesn't know when he's coming back. He left the team for non-football reasons. Is there some other designation that applies to a situation like this?
could they simply deactivate him the rest of the season? I get that he'd be paid in this instance.
I'm actually not sure what the lawsuit is. Incognito is gone. At the very least, they've begun to demonstrate that they are making the workplace safe. At this point, if he doesn't want to return to work, I think it's on him.
And I appreciate Martin's situation, that it would be brutal to come back right now, but it certainly seems to me that the Fins have made an accomodationthe 23rd and Rocky Raccoon like this. -

I don't see 500k being worth the media attention and backlash. Act sympathetic towards Martin, honor his contract and move on citing any number of feel good notions about caring about him off the field, etc. At this point he has the public in his back pocket and the media too, its a lose lose situation over 500k.....move on.
-
While I applaud the organization for taking a stance, I fear that the backlash will be impossible to contain, even if the team is 100% correct.Bpk likes this. -

They've acknowledged they have a problem and have asked the NFL to investigate.
Why they would dick around over $500K I'll never understand. The goal should be to make this problem disappear as quickly as possible.DPlus47 and Rocky Raccoon like this. -

I'm with schmolioot here. The play here should be to make this go away as fast and best as possible. Fighting over $500k will make this worse.

$500K is chump change in the grand scheme of things to the organization. And what is to be gained by all this? At best, we had an entire team full of vile a-holes instead of just one vile a-hole. that's not a big improvement -
Both sides have warrant to them. I can see why the Dolphins want $500k back. Its not about the monetary reasons, but rather making a statement. The other side has a point too. Its a 100 + million dollar organization. 500k is nothing. -
-
Perhaps this is more of an offensive strategy to send a message to the Martin family that they are not going to have a cakewalk against the team, despite the media fueled hysteria they helped manufacture. -

The Dolphins' position in this is that Richie Incognito acted inappropriately and they took the correct course of action once they were made aware of it, but that the workplace environment has very little (i.e. nothing) to do with Jonathan Martin's current mental breakdown.
And they're probably 100% correct. -
And truthfully I love the Dolphins having balls to play hard ball. But in this case? It's not worth it.

If I were the Phins...and they have info now that Martin has been playing them...Id also want to make those ripping the organization right now end up with mud on their face

I don't understand this reply.
The answer to bullying is to hit them? Why would you encourage this here but not at a business place like a biotech company or law firm? Do you suggest people there to punch another co-worker in this face if they are being harassed?
I'm not supporting Martin or Incognito until I hear the facts. But people responding that he should of "hit back" or "man up" is confusing. This would not be acceptable for one second in other professional work environments. However, I don't know if I believe if its the Dolphins workplace for the breakdown or just Incognito being an asshat and Martin breaking down. -

Not saying it's right, but usually big orginazations pay settlements to avoid court even if they can win.
