They've waived/injured Collins and Binns. In Armon Binns' case they're probably hoping he clears waivers so his rights revert back to them.
Keenan Davis is another Iowa receiver that the Dolphins' receivers coach is familiar with from his time as the Iowa Offensive Coordinator.
I wouldn't hold out a ton of hope for him. I think he's just a body they bring in that they have confidence knows what he's doing in the system and under this receivers coach, so that they don't have to worry about holding his hand or anything.
I saw Keenan Davis play at Shrine practice. He can make physical catches down the field at times, but he was nothing special.

Yeah I didn't even know about Jasper Collins being hurt. Too bad. On tape he looks good but you notice he never had to deal with physical coverage. He got into Shrine practice and looked good there too but then one day the coaches unleashed physical coverage from the DBs on the WRs to see who could handle it and who couldn't. He wilted like lettuce under a heat lamp. It was awful. Notable. Embarrassing. Probably the worst of the bunch. From that point on I never held much hope for the guy.
Chad Bumphis and Marvin McNutt still my favorites to maybe make the team. Particularly Bumphis may have an opportunity because the Dolphins looked like they were going to try and use Armon Binns in the slot a fair bit. It was because they wanted a bigger player in there, a description Chad Bumphis most assuredly does not fit, however the net effect may still be that they need a guy to take some of those slot snaps that Binns will no longer be taking. Marvin McNutt himself admitted he's a long strider better suited for the outsides, so I doubt he's the one stepping into those shoes.Claymore95 likes this. -

Do either Bumphis and/or McNutt play special teams? That is where Pruitt is most likely to make his mark (and perhaps the team).

Don't know. Hard to say.
Chad Bumphis was an accomplished punt returner at Mississippi State. Don't know if he played on any other STs units though. He had 1 career tackle. McNutt had 2 career tackles.Ohiophinphan likes this. -

Chad Bumphis, Keenan Davis and Jasper Collins were all in attendance during that week of Shrine practices. I saw all three practice during the week, and I saw all three play in the game.
All three had their good moments and bad moments. For Collins his good moments were when given space off the line and free access to run and juke and cut however he wants. His bad moments were when having to deal with physicality, he completely melted down. Completely. For Keenan Davis there was just a consistency issue as he didn't get open that often, but then would make a fairly decent big catch. For Chad Bumphis his good moments were consistent...any time he was out there running a route. The guy got open as naturally as anyone you see. Polished, quick as a waterbug, he had the makings of clearly being the best receiver in practice...except when the ball arrived at his hands. Kept fighting the ball and either dropping it or just not hauling in a contested catch.
Of the three, the one that intrigued me most during the practice week was Bumphis...because his issues stand the greatest chance of being correctable, and they were also the most divergent from what I had seen on film. The Keenan Davis I saw at practice was the Keenan Davis I saw at Iowa. The Jasper Collins I saw at practice wilted under the heat of physically tough competition that the Jasper Collins I saw on Mount Union tape never faced. But the Chad Bumphis I saw in practice had worse hands than the Chad Bumphis I saw in SEC games where he faced tough competition. To me that meant he could be having a bad practice week, or he could be a 'gamer'. Sure enough, he dominated the game itself. Had the best day of any receiver by far.
So you ask me after having spent a week with all three guys, which guy I'd take in the NFL? I'm going to go with Chad Bumphis.
I hope he gets a real shot during the preseason games. The guy has the looks of a gamer...a guy you don't notice as much in practice but then you notice because he's making plays in the game.Larry Little, Mexphin, cdz12250 and 5 others like this. -

Pretty bummed about Binns. But it seems like McNutt is in line for WR #4, but 5 & 6? Bumphis and Matthews? Would we even keep 6 WRs with a whole bunch of TEs?

Where's Derrell Johnson-Koulianos? Let's get the gang back together and party. DJK can supply the dope. -
With all these injuries to our 4s, 5s, 6s... I'm wondering if this improves our man Eggnew's chances of making the team? I mean if he could show ANYTHING on ST's, I'd think it would. Maybe he can backup longsnap?

Seems like the Dolphins will probably keep four tight ends because that's their thing. Egnew should make the team above Kyle Miller. But some of the blocking I saw on the bootleg videos from the scrimmage the other night were like...LES BROWN bad. Even worse than a year ago. And I'm not just talking about the play where he got taken right to left all the way into the backfield and rolled up on LT Will Yeatman. Other plays too, where you're like...man I wish I didn't see that.

Prior to his senior season, Chad Bumphis was a player who got open all the time at Mississippi State. Until Tyler Russell was the quarterback though, he never had a quarterback that could consistently get him the ball. With Russell at quarterback, Chad lead all SEC receivers in TD receptions and caught a TD pass every 4.8 receptions that he had. The guy just naturally knows how to get open, and I think that is something that Joe Philbin really likes in him.

Good open field moves to get away from defenders from what I saw as well, and good blocking down field. -

Re: Dolphins Waive Armon Binns & Jasper Collins; Sign Keenan Davis
Seriously though, I'd rather punch a brick wall than see us sign him. -
Hopefully Matthews can get back and Bumphis can make some plays in pre-season, i don't see any of the guys we've brought in making any impact, even if they do make the team which seems unlikely.
In response to the 4TE's and Egnew, at what point do you just give up on his blocking and see if he can do something purely as a receiver because at the moment i don't think he's worth the roster spot? -
Egnew's gone IMO unless he flashes in the passing game. He's had one year as a passenger already...

What about the development of Thigpin as a receiver? I don't really see a terrible need beyond three... Miller, Gillislee, Thomas, Thigpin, Lane, Clay out of the backfield with Keller, Sims, Miller, Clay as H-back/TE to go with Wallace, Hartline, Gibson. Looks like a deep receiving tree to me!

The good news is Egnew very well could flash in the passing game this preseason. Dude gets open and is capable of making some pretty incredible catches.
You also get the feeling that if he makes a few plays in the games that get him some good pub, he'd probably all the sudden play with loads more confidence in practice. -

What are the odds that the Dolphins just stash Matthews on IR? -

Maybe a miracle happens with this kid, but I just don't see it. I think he's a passenger again this year, lets us adown a few times has a few okay catches and then gets cut next offseason when we get more TE depth. -
There should be no reason for Egnew not contributing in the slot as a 3rd receiver. On a talent level he's a mismatch for defenders. He's too big for nickel corners to handle one on one, too fast and athletic for most linebackers, and if you bring a safety down to pick him up Mike Wallace says thank you. Confidence and improved play comes with touches. We should be playing him out in space in the slot or split wide like he was accustomed to at Mizzou and getting him some easy touches in the short passing game and letting the kid use his natural ability to make some plays to gain back his confidence & swagger. Screw worrying about him as a blocker at this point. He's a jumbo slot receiver. The more time spent worrying about developing his blocking ability the quicker his exit from the team will be.
