Anyone got any opinions on D.J. Swearinger? Seems like whenever I watch a South Carolina game I'm never trying to focus on him, yet he always finds a way to stick out and impress me.

 

Incidentally, Eric Reid, Robert Woods, John Simon, Nickell Robey, Joseph Fauria and Jon Bostic...not bad! LOL.

But you're automatically going to endear yourself to me when you take guys like Fauria and Robey.

 

Whenever I hear his name I picture him calling someone a "c***sucker"..... granted that's Al Swearengen, but sounds close enough.

Totally agree. I don't think anyone should complain if we made that haul. That top 5 would seem to me to make sense even more if we retain Long and Smith, sign Jennings, and lose Hartline, Starks and Clemons. Also, either resign Fasano or sign a guy like Keller. Keller and Fauria as our top 2 TEs would look pretty sweet. Getting him in the 3rd would look like far greater value than Egnew did last year. Though I guess we still shouldn't be ready to give up on Egnew. If we sign Jennings and also resign Hartline, I do not think we go WR as early as the 2nd.

I keep thinking of Major Wright when I think about what little I've seen of D.J. Swearinger.

And I was a huge Major Wright fan. Still am. Love the pairing of he and Chris Conte, whom I was also a big fan of. I like that safety pairing. I also like the Kam Chancellor/Earl Thomas safety pairing, and obviously Polamalu/Clark.

 

If Egnew really is on the outs then you could see a revamp of the TE unit and this Draft would be an excellent Draft to do that. This Draft is LOADED at that position, I have come to believe. You've got the headliners most people know in Tyler Eifert and Zach Ertz.

But between Joseph Fauria, Travis Kelce, Levine Toilolo, Mychal Rivera, Justice Cunningham, Phil Lutzenkirchen, Chris Gragg, Gavin Escobar, Jordan Reed and Dion Sims...you've got a pretty fat belly in this Draft at that position.

 

Better select Lacey before the jets in the third.

 

that's why I'd be a fan of pairing a stud safety with Reshad. Maybe it's just me but these top safety tandems always seem to have a compounding affect involved while also feeding off each other. Man that whole Seattle secondary is just an intimidating nightmare and one of the reasons I'd be down with drafting Rhodes.

I never really paid much attention to Searinger but, like you, I always seemed to hear his name called. Not sure if it truly was called a lot or if it only seemed that way b/c every time I hear it I immediately think of one of my favorite characters, Al Swearengen (Deadwood). Great show BTW. I'll have to rewatch SC and see the Wright comparison.

Pairing Swearinger with Jones might not be such a bad thing. When you watch some of Swearinger's games you're going to see an underneath safety often put in man coverage but I think there's a lot of subtle signs of really good zone coverage out of him. Also there are some games I've seen some great range from him in the deep half which is something you really want in a safety because so few have it. I can't even remember which game I was watching now but I've seen that out of him and that impresses me.

But he also shows the range in his man coverage deep down the field. In man coverage he's about the best there is amongst the safeties. He shadowed Justin Hunter a bunch and had him easily. He ends up shadowing a lot of wide receivers from the slot.

And obviously he's known for his kill shots which may or may not (most often 'may') draw penalties. I don't care about that though. I'd rather rein in a guy that has that aggression in him than try and hope for someone who doesn't show it to suddenly develop it.

And not for nothing but any defensive back that can consistently get Dennis Johnson down without being juked or having your tackle broken, or allowing significant yards after contact...you have my respect.

 

Over the past few years the couple times I saw Baccari Rambo, S from Georgia, I liked what I saw. It seems he isn't very highly rated (certainly never seen him talked about any earlier than the 3rd), but he is a guy that intrigues me at least (given where he could be had).

 

One reason he's not rated high is because of his reputation for being dumb. I don't know if he's actually unintelligent but he does stupid things on the field. Has all the tools, though.

 

I see. I hadn't heard that, nor had I seen anything dumb in the couple games I saw (though I never watched him intentionally).

 

Love the name. Hope the play measures up.

 

Maybe he's grown up then. Who knows. But in the past, dumb mistakes. Immature.

 

It could be me (plus I said I've only seen a handful of his games this year and last). I watch a lot of football, and rarely with the intention of keying on a specific person so I could have just lost it from my memory.
