Ireland was hired first... Then they did a sham "search" and brought in Tony after Tony interviewed with Atlanta briefly... The Sparano hiring was the worse kept secret in the league, but Ireland was in Miami before by a couple weeks.

 

I'm really not sure what's dumb about that quote, even if he didn't hire Sparano.

 

Not sure what that quote has to do with who hired Sparano. If I took over the hiring in my company and I wanted to replace an employee who had some admirable qualities, that doesn't mean I hired the guy in the first place.

 

I don't see where in those 10 words he said he hired Tony. And just because you don't hire someone doesn't mean you can't see desirable qualities in them.

I hired into my job along with like 8 other people. There were plenty of qualities in them that I would look for in candidates if I ever had to hire any of their replacements.

 

Do you actually read and speak English? Can you point out to me one word in that sentence that indicates that Jeff Ireland postulates that he hired Sparano? It would appear that you are guilty of what most people do in this situation - reading 'into' what someone said what you wish he had said rather than actually evaluating what he said. Yet you're proposing that he is lying! That is a lot more than a little bit of a reach.

But, even that is not as much of a reach as the evaluation of him as one of the worst GM's in the league which has become rampant on the board. That ignores every decision he has ever made except those most of the detractors on the boards regard as failures - which is the most subtle form of 'lying.' From what I recall of the condition of the team following the 2007 year, this one has a lot more talent than that one ever had, and keep in mind that until September of 2010, Parcells was still the VP of Football Operations for the Miami Dolphins, and had final say over who was drafted, hired, and fired. And, then he bailed.

He seen certain qualities in Sparano that he would like to have in the next head coach. I think Sparano is extremely loyal and a great motivator. I think those are two qualities I'd like in a head coach. I can't really speak for Ireland, but I would assume he would at least want the new head coach to be a good motivator.

If you don't like Jeff Ireland, so be it... But the blind hatred for Ireland is unreal. You should all be looking on the bright side of this... with Ireland around, you won't see one of the most hated players in Channing Crowder on this team.

I remember Ireland specifically referencing Tony having the qualities of a "battleship captain" in what he looks for in a head coach. I believe he said this when Tony was first hired, and said it again after that roundtable press conference or whatever that was when Tony was extended after the flirtation with Harbaugh.

I'd certainly think leadership and loyalty are two things that Tony exemplifies that you can portray in a battleship captain (I do find it a little ironic that battleships have more or less been obsolete since WWII...with respect to the Parcells model of running the football, players with size, good, tough defense etc., as that's not the name of the game in the Rodger Goodell Football League).

Give me the admiral type that can see the big picture, knows how to attack from all angles rather than just plowing straight ahead, inch by inch. I just don't think Tony Sparano fit that mold. By God, you couldn't outwork the man, but you sure as sh!t could outsmart him. Give me the man who can outsmart the other, can see the big picture, develop young players - not by fear - but by teaching them, helping them learn smarter ways to do things, etc. I think that needs to change from the present model, from my perspective at least, which seemed to be under Tony Sparano, if you mess up, we'll cut you (see Sam Shields, Erik Walden, Bobby Carpenter, etc.).

But you're right, there's certain qualities that Jeff Ireland and Steve Ross (and Carl Peterson) should look for in the next coach. I just had the gut reaction that Jeff Ireland is going to look for the same damn thing in what he had with Tony Sparano if only for the fact he doesn't know any better coming from the Parcells lineage.

 

That's exactly it. In my opinion, Tony had alot of the qualities you'd want in a head coach. Its evident in the fact that his players apparently loved to play for him. I dont care about the survey league wide, because thats just perception based on guys that havent played for him. Watch some team videos, they loved Tony. Where Tony lacked IMO, was on the game management side. If you can find a guy similar to Tony, but with better expertise when it comes to game planning and game management, we're doing alright.

My thought would be why would one try and hire a coach with the same characteristics as the coach they just fired?? Someone else who cant coach an o line and seems to have many other descrepencies.

 

Ireland could have an opinion on the qualities he saw in Tony, without having been the one to hire him.

 

What did you want him to say? "Well, I wanted to hire Rex Ryan, but Bill Parcells wouldn't let me."

Of course, if he says that, then we can criticize him for not standing up for himself.

Worst GM in the NFL? Really. He's outdrafted two guys who some of y'all think is God's gift to GMing in Thomas Dimitroff and Scott Pioli. I don't guess that is enough. He should have drafted a franchise quarterback, which is kind of hard considering that a legitimate franchise quarterback hasn't been drafted at all in the four years he has run the Dolphins draft. "But, but, but......he should have taken Matt Ryan. That guy is a franchise quarterback." Well, if he's a franchise quarterback, then our undrafted, unheralded free agent signing Matt Moore has put up identical numbers to that franchise quarterback.

The fact is, no one wants to admit that Jeff has put into place a solid foundation that this team can now build upon. Jeff may not have good people skills, but he has a good eye for talent. Plus, he has shown that he is willing to adapt and embrace the changes that have happened in the league.

 

I only heard it live, so I might recall it a bit differently off memory. But I don't think that was exactly what he said.

He was saying 'many' of the same qualities as Tony. Passion, leadership, etc.

Does he take credit for this offensive line? The picks of Odrick and Misi? Does he get credit for Wake? Do we know what he has done here?

 

I can live with "many of the same qualities", otherwise it sounds silly as he would have been in essence saying " I'm looking for the same qualities as the HC I just fired".

I have to agree with those individuals who don't see anything in Ireland's quote which implies that he was the person who hired Sparano. While Ireland may not have stated that he hired Sparano, I still don't want him to remain with the Dolphins beyond this season. I feel that keeping him as the teams GM will prevent the Dolphins from hiring a quality HC. I just don't see any top tier coaching candidate wanting to come to the Dolphins and having to deal with Ireland.

If Ross really intends to keep Ireland as the teams GM. I hope Ross instead decides to sell the team to someone who is actually interested in bringing a winning team back to Miami. The fact Ross is even thinking about keeping Ireland shows that he has absolutely no concept of how to run a football organization. Parcells is gone, Sparano is gone, and now it is time for Ireland to be gone.

The problem with the Odrick pick is that the Dolphins were already strong on the defensive line and didn't need Odrick. Ireland wasn't concerned with picking the best player on the board, Dez Bryant, all he was concerned with was the sex life of Bryant's mother. Trading down and picking a player on the defensive line, while there was a much bigger need at the wide receiver and return spot shows how ineffective Ireland is as a GM.

 

it end up being a great pick if we switch to a 4-3. i say its a good pick as is he also may have though he was the the BPA

 

The strongest part of our team, so of course..add another 1st rounder. In a Salary Cap sport, Funds should be allotted wisely. Not on a rotation player.

Its quite obvious he's not saying that he hired Sparano... or anything along those lines for that matter, He's simply stating that they want. A guy like Tony, stating what he saw in Tony as a person, and as a football coach....

 

Taken in context, there is nothing wrong with what Ireland said. In fact, I agree completely with him.

 

We really don't know who called those shots because Parcells was still in charge.

But the dirty little secret is that the majority of the league had a problem with Dez Bryant. That stuff was out there. The Ireland fiasco was wildly blown out of proportion. And Bryant turned out to be anything but professional as a rookie. This franchise -- perhaps more than any other -- has to tread lightly when dealing with character issues. Most NFL cities don't have a South Beach.

Trading down wasn't the problem. Odrick can ball. If we'd have drafted Rob Gronkowski with that second pick -- or Jimmy Graham in the third -- we probably aren't having this conversation.

Really, would everyone have been fine drafting a WR at #12 just weeks after spending two #2's and $50 million on Brandon Marshall? We'd have been on their *** for neglecting positions of need.

We like to forget that the DL wasn't as assured as we like to think it was. Jason Ferguson was gone. Paul Soliai had done little besides get suspended for unprofessionalism to the point they moved Randy Starks to move to NT. Soliai and Tony McDaniel were both in a contract years. It was a reload move.

I think the draft picks themselves are absolutely fair game. But the trade-down, I was and still am fine with.

Thing is we were NOT set at D-Line when we drafted Odrick. Soliai hadn't played to his potential yet, Ferguson had just retired, McDaniel wasn't good just yet, and Starks was going to be the starting NT. We had just let JT and Peezy go and Wake wasn't guaranteed to be good. The line up was Langford, Starks, Odrick with Soliai and McDaniel as depth along with Baker. The plan was to add Odrick to the line and use Nolan's sometime 4-3 schemes in order to mask the lack of LB talent. Odrick got injured so we had to start Soliai who ended up playing lights out. McDaniel got more time and ended up being a solid rotational guy. We weren't even certain our LB corps would be good so we had to solidify the apparently weak D-Line. We signed Dansby and drafted Misi to at least make it presentable after Ayodele stinking it up the year before.

Anyone who says we had a strong line before the Odrick pick is making things up.

 

And, looking at the fact that we have a regime change; which will naturally involve the jettisoning of some players with Langford and Soliai as FA's having Odrick around is not a bad thing. Starks' contract will likely be up soon as well, then combine that with Merling being underwelming and Odrick could prove to be a damn good selection.

Aside from the fact that guy can simply play.

 

As long as those qualities are not......
