When Dolfans watch Matt Ryan lead Atlanta against Green Bay Saturday night, there are sure to be a few more conversations about whether Miami did the right thing in using the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft on Jake Long, thus leaving Ryan to the Falcons.
Larry Lacewell can add a bit of fuel to that fire.
Lacewell served as scouting director of the Cowboys from 1992-2005. He hired Jeff Ireland as national scout in 2001 and was replaced by Ireland when he retired.

Aikman was 7-19 in his 1st 26 starts.
He became great. He certainly didn't start out that way.
Just saying.dolfan7171 and MarinePhinFan like this. -

eh I wouldn't say aikman was great. haha.

Anyone else get the feeling that nobody even looks at Jake Long's performance when they say these things? It's almost like Jake Long is the one that is just good while Matt Ryan is the great one. However, it's pretty much the opposite I would say. I'm not saying we shouldn't ever take a franchise blindside protector over a franchise quarterback but in this specific case, I feel like Jake Long gets overlooked.
-
Honestly? I'd have rather taken Aaron Rodgers instead of Ronnie Brown and I was a huge Brown fan in the draft.

We knew it was going to happen from the beginning. If Henne panned out, it would of been the right choice, if not, then the wrong choice.

Would be be doing as well here though? -
Saban couldn't solve the QB issue..... HC career in the NFL over
Cameron couldn't solve the QB issue..... HC career in the NFL over
Sparano couldn't solve the QB issue..... HC career in the NFL hanging on by a thread and if he doesn't solve it this year.....over
Left Tackles don't lead teams to SB's....... QB's very often doemeraldfin, pumpdogs, Phins28 and 1 other person like this. -

I thought the Long pick was the right pick at the time. He definitely was the "safe pick." But, in retrospect, and even though I think Big Jake is one of the best left tackles in the game today, I think Ryan was the correct pick. He's everything that he was advertised to be, and is well on his way to being one of the best young QB's in the game today. And, QB is the most important position on a football team. Now, would he have been as good in Miami? Who knows. But, IMO you don't pass on franchise QB's when you have the chance to grab one. Henne could still end up being a good QB. But, he's never gonna be Ryan good...ever.

ANY of those coaches mentioned finds a franchise QB and their careers in the NFL are at least prolonged...... including the one currently coaching the team...might not have been "everything", but it was deff the biggest issue.
And those "not so great QBs" made one trip to the SB..... they don't keep their teams in contention every year.
Settling for a mediocre QB and building a team around him that is so good it doesn't matter, might work on occasion but it's certainly a poor strategy...
Can you name a Left Tackle that led his team to the SB?DolfanJake likes this. -
Ryan is a stud don't get me wrong but no way is he as successful here, ecspecially when his blind side would be comprised.Themole likes this. -

I remember Beck looking like a paint stripe on the highway behind that awesome line. If nothing else Ryan would have either become the ultimate scrambler or a David Carr behind that mess.

eh, id rather blame our medical staff for not green lighting brees. we have the best LT in the nfl. he's a lot of things, but i dont think a mistake is one of them.
-
Jake Long is not Mandarich. Thus, this argument is moot.
People need to stop with the what if's. It's really getting annoying. If we want to make so many what if statements, why not bring up ANY of the number of drafts where we drafted someone who BUSTED instead of a QB who (at least at one point) was or became good? Why do people pick on Jake? There are much better QBs out there than Matt Ryan right now, why not go back to the drafts of those QBs and nitpick those?
such is offseason life. -
Nobody's saying Jake ain't great. Nobody. It's just that quarterback is the more important position and the toughest position to fill.
Without a really good QB, you have to be so overwhelmingly good in other areas to even have a chance at going to the dance.
And even then, you can get mowed down by New England 45-3 because their QB will slice you up like a surgeon.
Give me a top QB any day of the week. Easily the most important position on the field.Pandarilla, emeraldfin, RGF and 8 others like this. -
He's got a better supporting cast up there. But he also makes the guys around him better.
I think WE'D be doing better, no question.DolfanJake and jetssuck like this. -
Not to mention how many times did we see WHOEVER was at QB blindsided and turn the ball over???
That went on for way too long....
Jake was the right pick. -
on a quick perusal of draft histories, any of these arguments would be a better what if than the current one, at least in my eyes:
07- Kolb over Ginn
06- Cutler over Jason Allen
05- Rodgers over Ronnie OR Orton, Cassel, Fitzpatrick over Roth
04- Schaub over Carey
02- Garrard over Seth McKinney
01- Brees over many, including Jamar Fletcher
00- Bulger or Brady over Todd Wade
98- Hasselbeck over John Avery
now, I know many of these QBs were "gems" and weren't touted as reasonable picks at the time to take in Round 1, but if people want to play the what if game, why not use any of these? I'm gonna start the "we should have taken Matt Schaub over Vernon Carey" thread. Schaub is arguably better than Matt Ryan, and Carey is certainly not as good as Jake Long.
Boom. Roasted. -
This:
This argument just doesn't make sense, your position isn't practical ..... and using Matt Light doesn't help your argument, it helps mine.
I'll just say this, Jake Long will not save Tony Sparano's job this year...... good play at the QB position most likely will tho.
Oh and I'm a big Jake Long fan........ but from the minute both he and Henne were drafted, this argument hinged on Chad Henne.
Henne pans out it was the right move, he doesn't then the pick should have been Ryan.
And for those saying Ryan wouldn't have been any good here? Good QB's make even the worst teams better.....djphinfan and Killerphins like this. -

No one really knew if Ryan was going to be head and shoulders better than Henne.
Point is, they may very well have made a mistake at the evaluation level, but for the info they had, they made the right call. More QBs are busts than not, after all. -
-
Lacewell doesn’t know if it was Bill Parcells or Ireland who made the call on Long in Miami, but he contends it was the wrong choice.
They can say what they want now,it makes them look like a genius. In hindsight it was the proper move and a building block to stability.
Who the ____ knew what was going to happen in the course of the next few years.
Next he'll say that Ryan IS the next Aikman. -
Aikman, another great QB but a great QB with great protection.

The only person I remember advocating Matt Ryan that year around here was Adamprez. Most everyone else either wanted CLong, Dorsey, or JLong.

So when you get a chance at one, you have to take him and gamble a little. But we know this regime is all about safety and conservatism. And its that cautiousness that will be their downfall.pumpdogs likes this. -

The Long pick was absolutely the right pick. Ryan has been great but so has Long and at the time we needed a sure thing and Ryan didnt seem like one. Its really that simple.

Matty Ice had his doubters and I think Parcells was one of them.Long was the safe pick but probably not the right pick.
We would be talking about Parcells legacy on his way to the HOF right now instead of accusing him of being a quitter who left his job unfinished and chosen managers high and dry.jetssuck likes this.
