- TUA TAGOVAILOAQB, COLLEGE PLAYER
An anonymous NFL executive expressed "serious concern about the durability" of Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa to The Athletic's Bob McGinn.
McGinn has conducted these polls with executives and scouts for 36 years. Quotes were made anonymous starting in 2015. That executive wasn't the only one of the 18 polled to slam Tagovailoa. "I don’t want to put my whole franchise on a left-handed, beat-up, 6-foot quarterback. No thank you," said an AFC personnel man. “He’s a great college player but, wow, he is fragile,” another AFC personnel man said. “He’s a super kid and I don’t wish ill will, but there’s three, four or five red flags staring us all in the face saying, ‘You know what? This guy’s not going to be all that he’s cracked up to be.’” Some teams have expressed concern about Tagovailoa's hip injury being a problem again in a few years, causing concern when he's due a second NFL contract. On top of the hip, Tagovailoa has also had surgeries on both ankles for high-ankle sprains, a sprained knee, and hand surgery. He's already been pretty banged up in his career. At least three teams have removed Tua from their draft boards completely. His draft night could be interesting.

He's a risk, we know.
-
Unless we know who the teams are the fact that he was removed from some draft boards it is meaningless.
-
Pretty much all the things I've been saying, though I dont care he is lefty lol
The bottom line is that his skills dont necessarily translate well to the NFL level.
He seems like a guy with a really low ceiling to me who could be solid but not spectacular at a lot of things but not enough to be a top QB.
I think he will last in the NFL but I see more of a journeyman career than something special.
I dont feel too much different about Burrow honestly, but with the injuries I'd definitely go for Burrow first -
We need to use the #5 on either Simmons, Andrew Thomas, Jedrick Wills, or trade down.Last edited: Apr 17, 2020xphinfanx, FphinFantastic and Unlucky 13 like this. -
I really do like Tua as a player but I've said for awhile I have concerns over his durability. Really I think you would need blinders to think otherwise. I have an irrational dislike of Herbert so thats two off the list. Doesn't leave much. Love? Hurts? I don't know so I am grateful I don't need to make the call.

The word was a few weeks ago we would have to trade up for Tua. I can only hope Grier stands pat at #5. If we take him then, OK. I will have to live with it and hope he can stay healthy. However, if we give up major resources to trade up for him and he ends up being injury-prone then that is going to set us back, big time. We need those resources to fill all the other holes we have, especially on the OL, so we can at least try and protect the dude.

Another thing to consider, we've seen all these quotes coming from an AFC East GM. It's not New York or Buffalo, and if it's New England then you know it's likely a smokescreen so they can get Tua in the 20's. I think it's entirely possible that it's Grier leaking these evaluations on Tua either out of honesty (we're not drafting him) or NFL politics (he's still our pick at #5). It really is anyone's guess where we stand on Tua.Surfs Up 99 likes this. -

The point of the article is how he's being viewed by teams. And, reference is made to more than one "AFC personnel man". So, one of them could be the Dolphins. Now, I get it's the lying season, so it could just be smoke. I don't think it is, but we shall see. -
Yawn! Ah well, if folk are willing to accept the 'gospel' of an unnamed source, as long as it suits their narrative, so be it. Just file it away with..
'If god is so good, why does he let all these bad things happen?'
"Well, he's testing us..."
'The Russians did it.'
"You have proof?"
'Er, let's just say it's 'highly likely'... so yeah, we have proof' -
Meh, these kinds of articles always smell of smoke more than actual reality. I will say, for example, would anyone put it past the Pats to try and send out signals like this to get Tua dropping into the teens/early 20s and reasonable trade distance? I wouldn't, and don't want to see him end up there.
At the end of the day, if our medical staff, Grier and Flores don't believe in him then I will have to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I will do the same if the draft (even trade up for) Tua. I can't fault Grier and Flores for being wary of medicals I also won't fault them for taking a chance on such a talent. But if they do pass, they had better be prepared. -
Let's face it Grier and Flores could come out and openly say that there's 0% chance of us drafting Tua and yet we'd still be debating whether it's a smokescreen. My point being, ignore all talk from "Sources" and "reports say", let's wait 6 more days and get our answers when the picks are made.

I agree with the worries. I would still be okay with taking him at 5, but not trading up unless, as was said, we could do it for just the #39 pick.

I dont think there is a team dumb enough to trade up tor Tua or even make him a top 10 pick. If Ireland was still our GM then id say we would be stupid enough to do either moves. But I think Grier is smarter than that... i hope he is.

I mean next year, Trevor Lawrence is a number one pick QB. Yes, no question. In 2018, Sam Darnold was. But teams are forcing it more and more when those guys aren't part of a class. -

When draft time comes up every fan pretends to be an expert so people will be pissed no matter what they do but this franchise has been so consistently mediocre that I can't be too bothered if they roll the dice on the QB with the greater potential. -
I get it. Pick #5 for you guys is very valuable and it should be a for sure thing.
But in this case. This pick also could be a high risk even higher reward pick if Tua does indeed stay healthy. You guys could afford to go for it if you think this is the guy to lead the team. One pick doesnt define your franchise, and what will be interesting is the other picks Grier hits or misses that will put the Dolphins over the top. Based on NFL history, if a team isnt successful with all these picks in 3-4 years from now -- Grier would have to really come to the spot light and explain... he wont be criticized about missing on a #5 pick, but his overall draft class. Because at this point, he has alot of ammo than your typical NFL GM. I hope he has studied and is ready to make a huge difference beacause we are going to know sooner than later if he has made the right picks. Dolphins should be a SB contending team within 2-3 years from now if everything goes according to plan. -

I have been saying this from day one. Anyone that is super high on Tua has fallen in love. You can see it in their evaluations. Many times, they just ignore the injury altogether.
Sometimes they resort to excuse making. Player X came back from injury Y, so Tua can do it too. Come on. An entirely different player with a different/similar injury doesn't mean a whole lot in terms of this. One thing that gets me the most during the draft season is "exception man." They find a guy who defies a time tested rule and defies. They then point to this one exception and argue the rule is no longer applicable.
We also got people whose cousin's, neighbor's, gardener is a nurse and is positive that Tua is gonna make a full recovery.
The problem is that none of us are in a position to even make a good educated guess on his prognosis. There are people that are in a situation to offer a much better guess than we are - the team doctors. Unfortunately, they cannot access him either.
I truly think that there should a consensus on this board that everyone should be very skeptical about this pick. -
To me, it's a classic case of overthinking. The dude is an exceptional talent. I see many of the naysayers as just wanting to be the types to latch onto a name and be contrarian so they can later point to it if it works in their favor to crow about it. We see it every single year.
Now, if our team feels the medicals just aren't good enough, then that's ok, at least as long as they can execute something well, I like both Herbert and Love. But if they think the medicals are fine and take him - even move up? I'm down, we will be getting a big time talent. Grier will need to feel strongly enough in either case to put his career on the line - his QB will be a defining pick. Failure likely means he doesn't pick the next one. Success means a long career. I am willing as a fan to meet him on that choice. -
He is injury prone and that is a fact.Spin it any way you like it but thats the truth.Hooligan, freeperjim, Unlucky 13 and 3 others like this. -
If we do draft him...fine....:001_rolleyes:...I'll support the team, but it would be wise to redshirt him for a season to fully rehabilitate and learn. -
I really do think that this is a situation where you need to put complex thought into it. Tua thrived where everything was perfect. He had the best coach, a NFL staple of receivers, and has played behind a line with first round picks. Let me be clear. This does mean something. When everything is perfect Tua succeeds. I don't think that the Dolphins will be anywhere near perfect, and I seriously do wonder how he will play.
On the other hand, Herbert seemed to lack the talent around him. I really wonder what would have happened if at the beginning of their freshman years, they had switched teams. I really think Oregon and Alabama would be roughly the same. However, I do think Herbert would be the consensus first overall pick. I think if he had the production of Tua, his physical tools would really be marveled over even more than they have been.hitman8 likes this. -
I'm not excited about how he played when he was healthy and things were perfect, personally. Never have been. His physical tools just dont impress me, and the way he holds his body and how he sets up to throw just look so wrong.

I would take Love or Hurts over Herbert.Puka-head likes this. -
Does that mean he's not a stud QB? Nope, it doesn't mean that at all. But at the same time, it doesn't prove he's an NFL-level quarterback either....even when 100% healthy. -

If Tua fell all the way to 56 or 70, I still don't think I would take him. He's going nowhere in the NFL. My money is on Hurts and Eason when the dust settles having the best careers out of this whole QB class. Burrow will be in the conversation but his team is going to suck him down with it if he goes to Cinci.
