I feel like we have officially made the same mistake twice in a row. Philbin was a genius when he worked with Aaron Rodgers, and Gase was a genius after working with Peyton Manning. I think it was painfully obvious that the truth was vastly different than it appeared. This happens all too often in the NFL. Look at every coach that landed a big time gig after working with the Patriots. Having a great QB makes anyone a genius.
I think that we need to look at coaches that are getting a lot out of a little. I remember really liking Jay Gruden as a head coaching candidate because I really did not feel like he had exceptional talent in Cincy, but was able to maximize the output of the players that he did have. Also, it seemed like offensive draft picks tended to pan out, and I thought that his player development seemed to be on solid footing.
So who are the current "Jay Grudens."
John Morton - I am awestruck by the job that he has done in New York. They really do not have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball, and they are getting a ton of production out of Jay Gruden.
Frank Reich - I am genuinely impressed with the growth of Carson Wentz this year. He has got a lot production out of Zach Ertz. Reich had some level of success in San Diego.
Matt Nagy - I love the Andy Reid tree. If you really think about it, Andy Reid has never had a bad quarterback. He got EXCELLENT production out McNabb, Smith, Vick, and Foles. Moreover, Doug Pederson is a shining example of an Andy Reid disciple doing well.
Jim Bob Cooter - Although he has a few run-ins with alcohol related incidents, what he has done in Detroit sine the exodus of Calvin Johnson is admirable. Aside from Stafford, he really doesn't have a super star on offense. Nevertheless, Detroit has done fairly well on offense.
I'd love to hear if you guys have any other ideas.

Can we at least wait until Gase has a losing record? It is not like he is Wanny and inherited a very talented team.

Lemme tell you the movie plot we are currently watching. Gase is given a pass for this season with RT hurt; however, mediocrity ensues next year - expect between 7-9 wins next year. Ross, loyal to a fault, gives him one last chance. He wins week 1, but goes on a bit of a losing streak. The team loses faith in him. Gase is fired in season. We then hire whoever the Colts offensive coordinator happens to be because he is the obvious 'the flavor of the month' because somehow he has turned Andrew Luck into an elite QB. Posters on this board will begin to rejoice. We will see great messages like, "OMG, Coach Colts is so brilliant. Andrew Luck *stats, stats, stats*." "Now that we have Coach Colts, our offense will be back on track. We just need to get a few more pieces on the offensive line. I'm confident we find a middle round draft pick that will be the anchor of our offensive line."
Plot twist - Coach Colts takes off a mask, and it is Adam Gase laughing. The screen starts fading to black, but wait, Adam Gase takes off a second mask - it is Joe Philbin. He looks at the camera, and says, "Guys, I never left. Remember, no matter how much things may change, they always stay the same."mooseguts and Phin McCool like this. -
While the offense looks putrid, we are still 4-3, after being 10-6 last season. At least wait until Miami is 4-5 before writing him completely off.Irishman, Two Tacos and eltos_lightfoot like this. -

Gase - I am planning on running an 11 pts. per game offense.
Tannenbaum - I dig, but how we gonna win?
Gase - Keep teams to 10 pts per game.
Tannenbaum - Uhhhh, I don't know if that is a good plan.
Ross - Shhhh, Mikey, this man is clearly a genius. The people on ESPN say so.
Gase - I guess we could score more points if we sign some offensive linemen.
Tannenbaum - Hard no. We aint wasting our precious cap space on linemen. We will draft them in the middle rounds like we always do. It is a time honored tradition that work.
Ross - Adam, have you ever been to London? It is a great place. Might I suggest part of your plan be getting used to London? You are gonna spend a lot of time there. I know they are soccer fans there, so they are used to low scoring games. Heck, you could even put up a goose egg there, and they will be cool with it.
Tannenbaum - I don't even know if this is a plan, but I can tell you this, I could sign some big name free agents if that helps. Every year there is a Greg Jennings. Every year, I can find him.
Ross - I'm confused. Usually, when I am confused, I just throw large sums of money at the problem, but this time I am asking the question, what is your plan.
Tannenbaum and Gase together - To win games.
Ross - I'm not sure that's a plan.
Gase - Trust me, I am a genius.
Ross - Oh, that's right, I forgot.Dolphin Dundee likes this. -

We have a 2 year HC still under 40 years old. You think he knows everything? No. He's still learning. He's going to be a successful coach and he's going to be our coach for a very long time.Irishman, Rocky Raccoon and ChrisKo like this. -

A large part of being a good coach is knowing when things are not working and making adjustments. Gase has assembled the worst offense in the NFL so far this season.... so can he turn it around? Can he figure out what is NOT working and scheme around it?
By the end of this season we'll know what kind of coach Gase really is. If he continues doing what he has been doing, refusing to change his offense? If he can't scheme his way to more than 11-12 points a game?
When the Jets are competitive with Josh McCown at QB, but we can't score any points with Cutler/Moore and more offensive talent??? What then is the difference between between the teams? Coaching up players and game planning apparently. Gase is doing LESS with MORE and I mean a LOT LESS.
If nothing changes, then you have to admit he was a mistake and move on. Why waste a third season? For the record, I hope Gase can step back, see how things really are, and make some needed changes. -

The offense is terrible and Gase shoulders a lot of blame. I believe when dealing with someone like Gase who you knew had a lot to learn, you give them a chance to correct their mistakes.
I'd like to see him here at least until the middle of next season if not the end. -
He reminds me too much of Mike McCoy in San Diego... just your average treadmill leader... supposed offensive genius that amounts to no results

Gase will get the pass this year and willbe given 2 more seasons.
My pick for coach has always been Jim Harbaugh. I think that he would come back to the NFL for the right deal. Our front office needs to all get fired too.tirty8 likes this. -
We beat the Chargers because of a missed field goal.
We beat the Jets because McCown threw a awful INT.
We beat the Titans by 6 against their backup.
We beat the Falcons because they could not score in the second half.
Realistically, we did not beat anyone. It just seems like four teams beat themselves against us. If you look past the wins and look at the games themselves, it is obvious that we do not have a sustainable path to success with Gase as our head coach.CanGasePlaybook likes this. -

Gotta love how you just cut off the entire second part of my post where my point is that those teams shot themselves in the foot. Some of those instances were worse than others, but generally speaking, it is not a sustainable way of winning. -
I understand the frustration with Gase because he is the head coach. Yet to me, the real problem is the owner and his inability to hire the right people to run the organization.
The fact Ross hired Tannebaum to be the head of football operations simply shows that Ross still doesn’t have a clue as an NFL owner. As long as Tannebaum remains with the Dolphins in his current position, this team has zero chance of being anything more than the same mediocre team it has been for the past 15 years.
The real problem is the overall lack of talent throughout the roster and that falls directly on the GM and Tannebaum. Tannebaum was a failure in New York and the Jets have been trying to rebuild from the mess he left them in since he was fired as their GM.
With limited talent on the Dolphins roster and little cap space to improve the roster going forward, things are only going to get worse in the coming years if Ross sticks with Tannebaum.hitman8 likes this. -
Coaching scheme and game plan and adjustments ( do we have one now, 8 games into the season.) ....
His stats
Win loss record.... ( see thirty8 explanation of to many sloppy wins )
Ya we out preform teams, the ones that are willing to hand us the win and not because we out played them but rather they played terribly ....
Do some of you guys actually watch the games ?
Personally I like Gase but as a head coach he just is not even near ready. Though I must admit he's one of the luckiest guys on game day, For actually watching the majority of wins he has has been a real task and rarely have I seen a team out there that was actually prepared and all on the same page. That at this stage should not be happening near on the level we all experience pretty much every week and that my friend is a large part of what a head coach is supposed to be aware of and able to avoid...
And listening to his PC see a frustrated scattered confused leader that just is not ready to be a head coach in the NFL....
Personally would like to get a new one in the off season ONLY if one of experience and substance falls through the cracks.
Christ why does this organization take so many years to see whats been already playing out for years right in front of them.. Oh ya and just for some of my followers (echo), remember not to be surprised when we go after more scrubs for the OL in the off season......Its like ground hog day..... or the Marino jinks is real.....
Have to admit though I'm fulfilled as hell with Dolphins...Saw the start 66, Shula, 2 superbowls, perfect season 17-0, Larry Zonka, Clayton, Duper, Paul Warfield and last but not least and truthfully the best,,,,,,, 17 years of watching a group of players being a team and lead by the Greatest passing QB of all time Dan Marino.......I've realized that I'm spoiled and would be shock to ever see a Dolphins team bring such consistent success and the emotional highs as those teams and realized how lucky I was to experience that. Christ now half the time even if we win its still a struggle to watch 90% of the game....
This team is so scattered with some very good players, though more definitely neededLast edited: Oct 28, 2017tirty8 likes this. -
Waaaaay too early to consider Gase a bust.
He's a young, first time, head coach inheriting a problematic team, and he has high concepts and high standards. This was always going to take time. Then add in the other stuff like the drug abusing coach etc. and Gase is on a steep learning curve.
HC is the singlemost influential position outside the owner and GM, and requires the most time and adjustment.
Consider that many of the greatest coaches had rough starts and needed to get the right talent and mix. If Gase can be great it's still going to need time.
Right now I think the Dolphins would be foolish to move on from him. Even if a veteran were pulled in it would be no guarantee of anything. And with Gase there's a lot more upside.
Let the man learn and do his job.
Oh, and that's without even addressing the other issues this team has, both known to us and unknown.Irishman likes this. -
Love the excuses you give Gase as though he has no responsibility in the problems he's helped create and now not knowing even how to clean it up.. I hold him more responsible and just don't think that he knows enough to be the Head coach, OC maybe...
I'm not getting any younger and if there is a Andy Reid type head coach out there that becomes available or we can pry one away to help NOW (next season) we should do it in a heart beat.
Sorry not interested in "On the Job Training" any more, been there and did that for 15+ years and geee, after years of failure realized it hasn't worked in our case. And most importantly just haven't see enough of Leadership skills from Gase to give him more than the rest of the season since we are already stuck with this crap anyway. But he's got to go unless we see a miracle the rest of the season and Im not just talking about just being competent.....maybe showing a little of he knows what he's doing might help...lol -
You might not be interested in it but that could go l be more to do with the past 15 years than the past two. Particularly because it's essentially unavoidable. I don't care if you could go back in time and bring back a prime Don Shula, this team would still have issues.
There is simply no quick solution to find success.Irishman likes this. -

If only the game were that simple. Let's say you won the game but lost your starting QB. Can't just oversimplify the scoreboard now can you? -

There are trends within the game itself. You can start out hot, finished cold, but still win the game because you built a large enough lead early on HOWEVER the results of which carry over into the next week. Just like my example of the hurt QB. You quickly forget the tape gets out there on teams. -
To compensate, Gase has tried to dumb everything down to high school football levels....that's not necessarily on him and he's making the right call in this circumstance. It's also giving opponents a huge advantage in being able to read the offense but what else can you do when you've had less practices than any team due to travel/weather? Our boys just aren't prepared like they should be and it's not from a lack of coaching.
Think about this though- besides Sparano's one Cinderella season under Pennington and the Wildcat, we haven't had a winning season in almost 15 years. And in the years where we looked like we were playoff bound, the team crumbled down the stretch in spectacular fashion. There's no comparison between last year and the last dozen- our team pulled together and played great football to come back again and again. That's championship football folks and it was Adam Gase leading the charge.
I think we're doomed this season because of the loss of Tannehill....he's a huge X-factor because if receivers don't run the right route, he's tucking and running to make up for the error (which RT said in preseason....Gase told him not to hesitate in taking off). I think RT covered up a lot of this offensive weakness last year by playing like a stud and being tough as nails, so I'm nowhere near ready to give up on our coach or our team.
I'm pretty confident that we're going to lose at least 5 out of the last 6 games so our margin of error the next few weeks is zero...we have to play lights out in order to make the playoffs. And will that happen? Probably not. But I'm nowhere near ready to give up on Gase- he's the best we've had by far since Shula (and possibly JJ, who inherited a rebuilding team).Last edited: Oct 28, 2017Irishman and texanphinatic like this. -
