For the past 7 or 8 years about every 2nd post on these forums is about how the 'phins need a 'franchise QB' as if you could go out and pluck one off the nearest tree.
The reality is that there are at most 7 or 8 'franchise QBs' playing in the league at any one time and most of them have 10 year+ careers. Therefore on average you get 2 'franchise QBs' entering the league every 3 years, and that at least 24 teams in the league will be chasing them, because sometimes teams with old 'franchise QBs' are looking to replace the old with the new.
They're not easy to find and no one is going to give us one on a silver platter.

You can talk about how rare they are till the cows come home, but the fact remains that the Dolphins will be an also-ran until we get one.

This is why I'm more than fine w/ us trading three #1s and then some for Luck. Strike when you have the opportunity, as you never know when the next one will come along!

Yeah this a pointless post we all know that, it's just been over 10 years since this team has had one so I think we all are getting a little impatient. And I think our front office should address this issue.

Actually what probably happens is we make a different choice with the 9th pick and select someone like Weeden in round 2.... -

Other dirty little secret is, most of the "franchise' Qb's, were developed, over time, with some fans hating on them.
For example, Matt Moore could be Kurt Warner, but at the moment, he is "a backup Qb" to most fans.gunn34, Colorado Dolfan, RevRick and 1 other person like this. -
Point being there are times when even 'franchise" Qb's don't look like franchise Qb's, they happen to hit on the perfect opportunity that matches their skills.
One of the problems we've had in Miami is the fast turnover of Qb's doesn't let them develop, 2-3 Qb's play, on avg, every season for us since 04, until Henne showed up and started most of the games the last 3 yrs. -
-
-
But it is fundamentally true, the only Qb we've tried to develop in all of that time was Chad Henne. -
-
To this day, people still hate on Eli Manning.
If one looks at Jim Kelly's career, you see 25 Td's mid teens int's yr after yr, yet he is a HoF Qb, inspite of the fact Thurman Thomas drove that bus. -
Given the context of this year both Sparano and Henne were bound to fail. New OC and system during a lockout, 5 new starters for positions on offense including 3 on OL alongside an ailing LT who clearly wasn't healthy early in the year and 0-7 to start the season is understandable.
From what I saw, it looked like the lights went on for Henne this year. Wouldn't be surprised if he succeeds elsewhere if given the chance.
And for Sparano to get the support he had from the players after an abysmal start tells me he could have succeeded long-term as a coach given favorable conditions. -

that is true of Feely/Fiedler/Green/Beck/Pennington/Henne/Henne/Moore.Colorado Dolfan likes this. -
Case could be made for Rivers stepping into SD's Qb role, but guys like Ben R were not trusted to fling the ball all over the field for yrs. -

Perhaps it is all an overall symptom to a bigger problem at lower levels of football. IMO there doesn't seem to progression of players, especially at QB, so once they reach the NFL level, where they should be just honing their craft, and focusing more on the finer points they are catching up on the basics and kill their own development, because coaching the basics is not what NFL staffs should be about.

Thanks for highlighting one of the problems. -

I have long been of the opinion that free agency and the huge amount of money rookies sign for have demolished the QB position. If a player believes he has talent and his agent can convince other teams that he does, he leaves his b/u role to become a starter. The money he signed for that team expects immediate results as a return on their investment.
In the case of ot being a promising rookie coming out who signs for ridiculous money again the owner expects to see immediate results. Most players are not NFL ready starters from day 1 and need time to work with the coaches and develop into thier postion.
Many great QB's sat on the bench behind a veteran waiting for thier opprotunity. Talent alone does not make franchise QBs in most cases. People like Marino are not the norm, they are the exception to the rule. -

I can of course stnad on a soap box and scream "trade for Luck!!!" but realize it won't happen, so why not stick with MMoore, add weapons, see how he pans out? -
