I don't believe that for a second. It's a PR move to say such a thing, especially Landry.

 

Landry simply wanted too much money. There's really nothing more beyond that.

As for the moves with Wilson and Amendola, I agree that it feels like we went after guys we wanted for specific reasons instead of just the highest priced available option, which is exactly what winning teams do. Who knows if it will work, but there definitely seems to be a plan in place.

 

You are correct. It appears that plan is to ensure the Dolphins have a top three pick next year so they will finally be able to draft a top tier QB. Because all the top tier QB’s in this years draft will be long gone by the time the Dolphins pick in the first round.

The Chiefs and Patriots both made the playoffs last season. Yet the Chiefs didn’t want to sign Wilson and preferred to sign Sammy Watkins to a much larger contract in free agency. The Patriots know that Amendola is an older WR who has a history of injuries. They no doubt believe they can easily replace him for a lot less money than the Dolphins are going to pay him.

The Chiefs and the Patriots have a history of making the right personnel moves. The Dolphins on the otherhand have clearly showed that they built teams which strive for mediocrity. Based on these latest moves, mediocrity or worse appears to be the goal of the Dolphins once again.

Look, you're more than welcome to be upset at the fact that we didn't go out and spend FA money that we didn't have on big name free agents, but your justification just isn't there.

Watkins and Wilson are two vastly different players and you can't replace one with the other. They fill different roles.

As for the Patriots, this is EXACTLY what they do so well. They take jettisoned, "washed up" players from other teams and get tremendous production out of them by putting them in a system that fits exactly what that player does well. This is why the Pats have been so successful, and it's very clearly what we're trying to do, but you're bashing it which makes no sense.

We're not fighting for table scraps here. They're trying to find value that others don't see.

 

I was happy to see the team trade Landry. I'd been in that corner for a year, after he wouldn't sign a reasonable extension.

So we came into this offseason with RT, Parker, Stills, Grant and Drake as our main skill position guys. Very solid group that I was hoping to build upon with a good TE and a few more pieces on the OL. I was excited about where we could go.

Now, I don't have any idea what's happening after what they've done. Confused, and concerned about the long term ramifications.

 

I'm so tired of reading that Ajayi and Landry couldn't grasp the offense. If they didnt grasp the offense, how did Ajayi have almost 1300 yards rushing and almost 5 ypc in 2016 after missing one game completely and not starting until, I think, the 5th game. How did Landry lead the league in receptions last year if he didn't grasp the offense? Guess they just got lucky.

 

Gase waited until year 3 to finally utilize his real offense? That seems kind of dumb to be honest, most coaches only get 3 years to prove what they can do. I'm glad Gase is so confidant in his abilities he essentially wasted 2 years so he can show off year 3 with his real deal offense.

However, your justification for saying it isn't true, isn't really justification.

It is possible that the offense had to be changed/modified to fit certain guys and that left Gase less room to expand what the offense could do.

Again, I'm not saying Landry could or could not grasp the offense, I'm just saying your argument doesn't really lead to the conclusion you've made.

 

Ajayi didn't not grasp the offense, IMO, he just refused to play along. Splitting hairs here, however. Is refusing and not grasping that much different?

Landry, by all accounts and evidence of play, was very one dimensional in Miami. Was this because he couldn't run a full route tree? Was this because Gase ONLY played to his strengths? I don't think any of us here know the answer to these questions. At least not with any certainty

However, assuming that Landry couldn't grasp the offense is a valid opinion or belief.

The truth is, however, Ajayi and Landry (Ajayi especially) held this offense back. The reasons don't really matter.

 

Grasping the offense in whole and reading and reacting as a RB are two different things. Ajayi is one of the best in the league and reading and reacting during a run play. Seeing a hole or a crease and hitting it. He clearly didn't grasp the passing side of it. Rushing yards doesn't show much in terms of the ability to grasp the entire offense.

 

Ajayi wouldn't run through the hole the coach wanted him to. Landry celebrated every first down and threw punches. Those are not Gase philosophies so yeah, they didn't grasp what we were trying to accomplish on offense. That's not to say that they weren't good players...they just weren't the right fit for what this club needs to win.

And as far as Landry goes, do you really believe that we can't find a slot receiver that can catch 120 passes per season? Other teams didn't do it BECAUSE WE WEREN'T GETTING FIRST DOWNS....it was the only option we really had with Cutler at QB and a struggling offensive line. The guy couldn't run, he couldn't scramble, so he shifted in the pocket (like a stud, nonetheless) and completed the short ball. That was about survival though, not first downs or winning the game.

I liked Landry and Ajayi as players. They both have great skill-sets. But they both had the wrong attitude and they didn't want to listen. Landry sealed his fate in week 16 when he started a brawl- that's 100% on him and we don't need that type of voice in the locker room. If the guy said, "Sorry coach, I lost my cool and it won't happen again," then maybe he's still here. But the dumb *** said, "He grabbed my throat, I had to attack him coach..." That's just not what our team is supposed to be about...the "me first" mentality...and I would have traded Landry too.

Our offense has already improved with Ajayi gone. It will improve without Landry as well. Just wait and see.

 

I don't think that anyone would argue that our team has gotten better over the last few days.

Let's hope that we hear some news about about acquiring offensive linemen in the coming days. I think that would pay greater dividends than a few slot WRs.

 

Ya no, this has nothing to do with that.

The Chief's picked up Watkins to take the coverage away from Tyreke Hill running routes on the boundary - Wilson had no impact on that because he was in the slot.

At this stage Watkins is simply a better player(albeit hurt too much) and they're loading up around a QB starting his very first season. That doesn't take away from Wilson's potential. Both CAN exist at the same time.

 

I think it is more they weren't the type of players the coach wanted in his offense.

 

I'm no Gase defender - but he's been harping on that most of the previous two years and always seemed to implicate the same guys i.e. Ajayi/Landry.

Whether or not the signings of Wilson/Amendola work out will be determined, but it's clear what Gase is "trying" to accomplish.

 

Recall the Defcon 5 some elevated to when Ajayi was traded. Kenyon Drake quickly shut that up.

 

Well whether it was cognitive inability to grasp the offense or it was pouting discomfiture I do not know. What I do think, and this is not to discredit Landry and Ajayi's capabilities as football players, is that if we can add a TE that threatens the defense, this is going to be one exciting experiment. Parker, Amendola, Stills, Wilson, Drake...man. Most people believe Gase can scheme and play call to get guys open, and all of those guys present different matchup problems for defenses. Add a young but dangerous TE, a bit more capability on the interior OL, and perhaps a tough short yardage RB in the vein of Auburn's Kamryn Pettway and I am really looking forward to watching this develop. Of course, this is predicated on #17 being serviceable and staying healthy. I would have no problem if we take a QB at 11 but I don't see much being left there and I doubt we have the conviction to move up. As we say every year, #17 will have no excuses if he can't pepper the ball around the park with this group. Much more bullish than most on the potential of this offense....but its March, there remains plenty of time for a more sober reality to set in.

 

What about Chris Herndon from the U?

 

As a Canes fan, any Cane is a good Cane. I guess he is more a 3rd day guy / "sleeper" but I don't follow all the draft talking heads as much as some. His MCL really messed up what would have been a good year I think. I know the Penn State lad is legit, but I doubt he is still around when we start to think about a TE. But yea if Herndon's knee is right, he seems like a tall, fast guy that could do some work.

 

I'll give Gase this much. He's got us talking about anything but Tannehill.

 

I don't really think they've been waiting to do anything. It just takes time to turn over a large portion of a 53 man roster without completely tanking.

 

I just hope it doesn't turn into throwing the ball to Danny Amendola behind the line over Jarvis Landry.

 

When Wes Welker was at the prime of his career would you have been willing to make him one of the highest paid receivers in the league? Don't get me wrong he was a stud for NE but were you willing to make him one of the highest paid receivers?

 

Why not? He was one of the best at his position. I don't understand this mentality. Great players cost lots of money. If you're not willing to pay for good players that you can build around and that help you win, then why even bother?

 

Very good point. The answer is clearly a big "NOPE" as well- nobody, including New England, would have paid Welker 10M+ back in the day. And for the record, I'd take Welker in his prime over today's Landry any day of the week.

 

People love to forget that we lost our starting quarterback and our home field, forcing us to travel more than any team in the league with less practice days and a retired QB who had never played for us. Despite all that, I guess some folks believe that we still should have gone 16-0 and won the super bowl.

The season before, we were 10-6 after tanking HARD the first five games of the season. That should be the offense we're getting back and I don't see any of the doom/gloom that the naysayers are expecting. I honestly believe that 2018 is our year and we will make a solid playoff run. And Gase has the same mentality- he's said that this is his make/break season and we're coming to play.

 

If Landry can rack up 110 catches in an offense “he can’t grasp” then holy hell! What would he have had if he did grasp it? 180?

To the point though, this is an Adam Gase team. So it better succeed, and it better succeed THIS year.

I think its not "literal" meaning Landry and Ajayi couldn't grasp the offense. Its more the concept of "run your route, hit the open hole, take the four yards, get back to the huddle, etc, etc." Jarvis Landry was/is one of my favorite NFL players. He and Odell lined up for my Tigers and the differences then are the differences now. Odell would make highlights with great plays, Landry would make highlights for his consistency and playing hard. He needed a deep threat WR here (D. Parker) to develop. Never happened for him. He can't carry an offense...he can make a good offense much, much better.

I think he's going to be good in Cleveland, and thats going to stop Pittsburgh from automatically having a home playoff game every year.
