Liked the interview with Griese .While he is not a smooth commentator he was a cerebral type of QB who was able to lead the Dolphins to two SBs under Don Shula .He talks about Paul Warfields contribution to th offense anmd Manny Fernandez contribution to the defense.

A lot of good stuff for the old timers.

BTW Griese was a QB who would feel the heat and scramble out of trouble something that Tanny needs to get better at.Griese had few sacks .

 

feel the heat and scramble out of trouble..yup, seems like a identifiable weakness, however thats been the hardest thing to prove around here this summer to a lot of folks...lots wanna blame it on the line or whats best for him is to stay in the pocket and not run...quite maddening at times.

just feel the heat, anticipate the pressure, and scramble out of trouble..its what he's gonna need to start doing.

 

I agree with him scrambling more. Some of those sacks are all on him.

 

I always love to hear Bob talk about those teams of the 70's and what it meant for the Franchise when Coach came to the team along with Warfield..many do not know how great Griese was..the team's of yesteryear were the perfect example of "team". Somehow, whenever we needed a crucial play in the 4th quarter, someone would always step up and make a play. I am hoping that we have that this year...I kinda wish That Coach would mentor Philbin the way that Marino has Tannehill but I think Philbin is too proud to accept from the greatest what he should. Also I loved it in prior conversations with Griese that he said that without Earl Morral, we don't go undefeated..He was never afraid,or too proud to give credit when credit was due. Many joke about Griese now, saying this and that and it really irks me...the hits that he took are starting to take a toll on his speech and he always has to hesitate and think of what he wants to say before he says it because he does not want to say the wrong thing, I think many think this is alcohol and disrespect him. If he wants to have drinks at night, who are we to judge him? I imagine he has a lot of aches and pains from yesteryear and I for one, appreciate everything that Bob Griese did for the Miami Dolphins.

 

Dude...everyone agrees that scrambling to avoid pressure is good, and something he should do. The argument, in my opinion, has been that because of the abysmal line play, the pressure often came from multiple areas at once, and there were oftentimes no real lanes to scramble through. This does not mean that he never had had lanes, or that there weren't times that he had a lane and didn't go. The other problem has been comparing the escapability of say Russell Wilson, to the escapabilty of Tannehill. I don't think anyone is saying that Tannehill should just stand in whatever semblance of a pocket he has, and just take sacks.

 

I agree..sorta. I agree he needs to learn to move in the pocket, while maintaining focus on his WR's down field. What I DONT want him to do is pull the ball down and start running the ball. BADDDD habit to get into, IMO. Move in the pocket like Aaron Rogers...know where the pressure is coming from. As a last resort, pull it down and take off.

And its fools gold to try and compare Tannehill to Russel Wilson. Wilson has supreme lateral agility and balance.

 

Nobody is saying Tannehill shouldn't move around behind the LOS and buy time. We're saying he doesn't need to turn into a running QB ala Cam, Wilson, Kaep, etc... because that isn't who he is. Tannehill throws great on the move, I think we'd all be OK with him adding some A-Rod or Roethlisberger to his game.

And I like how easy you make pocket awareness seem while reading defenses w/body's flying around you, ready, willing, and to date, able to hit you at will w/a line that doesn't block wind.

 

He needs to feel and sense pressure better, but at this point he's about average. It's just looked worse b/c the lines have had some impressively poor performances. I'm probably more comfortable than most when it comes to wanting RT to run, but the primary skill a QB needs is to know how to distribute from the pocket. Young QBs with great wheels who can't read defenses and pass with accuracy don't last in this league.
