IMO, this guy is pretty much nuts on with his assessment of the two. I especially agree with his point the Sanchez does not have the arm to threaten the entire field, especially in bad weather.

Meh, the jury is still out for both kids. Sanchez has some good things going for him and is in an ideal situation for a guy with just ok arm strength, just as Penny. Bottom line, if they continue to play D like Rexy's boys have in the past and run the ball, he won't be failure.
As for Henne, this is his breakout year. He's going thru the OTAs and minicamps as the starter (unlike last year, where he was the backup during all this time and into the first quarter of the season. This is his time to shine, as they say. We don't have the D that Sanchez has, but we do have a pretty good run game and a target or two for him. Personally, I wouldn't take Sanchez over Henne, but I felt that way before Sanchez played at this level. Had he come into the jests with Mangenius, he'd have been considered a flop... But the question still remains with both of these kids. Henne will have have to shoulder more of the responsibility than Sanchez to be successful but only more time will tell for sure... -
I disagree that Sanchez doesn't have the arm to threaten the whole field. It's not as strong as Henne's, but it is strong enough. IMO Sanchez showed better anticipation and pocket awareness than Henne did as a rookie. (Arguably, Sanchez showed better anticipation than Henne has either year.) I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that Sanchez will improve his pocket awareness and reading of defenses in his second year. That is certainly what happened with Henne.
IMO going forward, Henne will always have the slightly stronger arm and Sanchez will always have better mobility (both escapability in the pocket and running ability). Sanchez had much better pocket awareness in college. If he progresses similar to how Henne has he may also maintain that advantage. I also think Sanchez was more accurate in college and will probably be the more accurate pro. I think the big difference between them right now is the ability to read defenses. Henne is way ahead as he should be with an additional year under his belt. That is why Sanchez threw so many INTs. But I have no reason to believe that going forward either player will end up better at reading defenses. So in the end (5 years down the line) I think we'll see two QBs who are good enough to take their teams where they want to go. Henne should always have the stronger arm, but Sanchez should end up with better accuracy, mobility and pocket awareness. -
Sanchez, imo, will eventually be the better decision maker.
Sanchez creates better when a play breaks down or protection breaks down. He can improvise more.
Henne can overwhelm a defense with his pace (on his throws) and his 'attack' the defense mentality. Sanchez is more of a chess game, while Henne seems to press CBs onto their heels. If they aren;t very frosty and sharp in their coverage he'll squeeze it into a small space quickly or zap it over their heads.
I'd compare Sanchez to a Sugar Ray Leonard, thinking man's boxer with less power.
I'd compare Henne to a George Foreman (young version)... lots of power and keeps moving forwards at you. not as wild as Foreman though.rafael likes this. -

I really liked Sanchez coming out off college, I think he has everything you need to succeed as a pro, yeah he doesn't have the greatest arm ever but he can complete all the pro throws you need to succeed. I was mad when the Jest got him. I always think we will beat the Jest and I think Henne is better but I like Sanchez, he's going to be good for a long time. But we will still own the Jest :)

Also, as far as decision making goes, it's a two-way street. Brett Favre has thrown a lot of picks in his career, but he's also thrown a lot of TD's that may have been considered poor decisions. Basically, he takes a lot of chances. I see this with Henne to some degree. He has a much better arm than Sanchez, so he gambles more. Not necessarily a bad thing.siciliansith and Bpk like this. -

About Sanchez, he cut down on his mistakes after that horrible game against ATL when he threw 3 picks and I believe Rexy cried (I may be off by a week about the crying).
Then he got out of their way, and just let the running and defense take over. Albeit against a Colts team that laid down. But the Cincy game, they had their starters in there at the beginning. It's possible their heart wasn't there, but they had their starters in, and the week after in the playoffs the jets still beat them, so I wouldn't say exactly two teams laid down. The colts for sure. If the colts do their job, Jets aren't in the playoffs. BUt I don't besmirch either team for that.Bpk likes this. -

Last year, Henne was better than Sanchez statistically.
BUT
Sanchez took a 9-7 team, went 9-7 and made it to the AFC Championship game.
Henne took a 11-5 team, went 7-9 and didn't make the playoffs.
Now, to be fair, Henne didn't start in the first 3 losses, and our defense wasn't anywhere near as good as the Jets' defense.
Honestly, I don't see either of these guys starting for an NFL team 5 years from now.Bpk likes this. -
But to say neither will be starting 5 years from now? I don't see that at all.Frumundah Finnatic, Bpk and siciliansith like this. -
Chad Henne has 3 game winning drives and has won games with his arm. Don't talk to me about a debate until Sanchez does it too. Which he hasn't and hasn't even come close.

Stafford on the Lions comes to mind for me, though I didn;t watch him enough to honestly say he played well. -
I think this article is nuts off with its assessment........

Looking for Cam Wake to put his nuts on Sanchez' forehead

I think at this point the debate is really stupid. Way too little sample size for either player.

You give way too much credit to QB's for their teams success. That would be like saying Trent Dilver took the 2000 Baltimore Ravens to the Super Bowl when Ray Lewis and their D took them to the Super Bowl.
The situations aren't even comparable. Henne took over a 0-3 team, lost his best weapon part way through the season and had nowhere near the support as Sanchez both offensively and defensively. Sanches had the leagues best OL, best running game and the best defense. Henne certainly had a good OL and a good running game but our defense squandered many opportunities for wins. Sanchez's D gave up almost 10 points less a game making it much easier to win games.
I would be shocked if at least one and probably both are starting in the NFL 5 years from now.2socks likes this. -

Anybody that thinks Henne is better than Fiedler or Carr is kidding themselves. The guy is unequivocally MEDIOCRE.2socks likes this. -

Mark Sanchez is handsome. Mark Sanchez is charming. Mark Sanchez was ranked the 28th best QB in the NFL last year when viewed by passer rating. Footballoutsiders' advanced metrics ranked him the 38th best QB in 2009.
If Sanchez was ugly and boring, there would be "bust" whispers all across NYC. The guy was blessed with a top-knotch offensive line and the league's best running game and he still couldn't become an average QB. The jets made it to the title game despite him.
As for Henne, he was the 22nd best QB in 2009 according to his QB rating. Footballoutsiders had him listed as the 17th best QB in 2009.
While the jury is certainly still out, Henne was better in 2009 by a wide margin. Even though Sanchez is prettier.GMJohnson and LandShark13 like this. -
I looked at it this way on another post...
Henne was a 2nd year QB, and though not having pratice time with his starters last year for the first 3 games, under the same Offensive system as his rookie year...
He had learned more of the Offensive playbook than Sanchez. Sporano and Henning gave him more rope to work with and he was allowed to take risks, that is where mistakes can be made, and he made more than a few...
Sanchez on the other end, when he started to make alot of mistakes early in the season, Rex realled him back in and gave him a concervative process (color code card before the snap) to work with where he was allowed to take risks when his coaches approved him to do so....
So Sanchez looked better at the end of the year because he was not allowed to take risks, while Henne was given the green light to be risky. Henne has taken his 1st Season as a starter, and as rookie starters go, he made bad decisions. It was tougher for Henne, in the later part of the Season, since he was 2 TDs score behind by his 3rd or 4th Offensive pocession...
Both QB's to me will be able to show this year if they have learned from their mistakes... -

It's like watching a role reversal of the Dolphins with Griese and the Jets with Joe Namath. We have the guy with the better arm by far. They have the guy who when he grows, can be a good hand offer and game manager. The only real difference is this time we have Joe Namath without the picks AND Paul Warfield.
