2nd is a little earlier but Id be ok 3rd or later...personally I think he will probably go late 4 early 5 because of all the past stupidity being held against him but hopefully hes turned a corner. Hes got considerable talent and now hopefully his head has caught up to the rest of him.

 

I think once we get towards the end of the 2nd round, teams will start thinking. They'll first think, "heck, we can wait" but then doubt will creep in and they'll be like, "wait, I wonder if someone will pull the trigger sooner than later .... perhaps, we should be that team," and then - suddenly, someone will grab him early in the 3rd.

Too much talent, way too much potential - a guy who is top 5/10 under traditional circumstances won't last long, no matter what dumb things he's done in the past.

 

I would be worried about any player who feels he has to pay someone to keep him on the straight and narrow path. I think he could turn into a solid NFL player, but I just don't think South Florida would be the best fit for a player who has a history of drug use. There are just too many temptations in South Florida for a young guy with a history like his. Being drafted by a team in a small market with less night life would benefit him the most, as far as I am concerned.

I dont look to much into the bench press with this guy. That is a slight bummer, but the other areas in the combine this morning he excelled. I thought he put together one of the most impressive performances of the weekend especially with all the pressure that surrounded him. I would take my chance with him in the 4th round. If we could get the playmaking ability from 2011 out of this guy in the 4th round, consider that one of the potential biggest steals of the draft.

 

He's risky due to both his height and immaturity. He's a luxury selection. Depending upon who the Phins get earlier in the draft, and who else is still there, I'd start considering him with my 4th round pick, but probably not before. He's a bit of a jackass, though... so, he's got Jets written all over him.

 

This is why I'm glad fans don't make personnel decisions.

Without the character issues, Mathieu is a 3rd to 4th round prospect that will likely never be anything more than a nickle corner and special teams guy. With the character issues, I think he's a guy you don't draft at all.

The guy simply is not a very good cornerback. He doesn't play with great speed. He is poor at turning and running with receivers. He gets beat as often as he makes a big play.

This guy is clueless. If he thinks this answer will ease any fears of teams and GM's, he's dumber than anyone could imagine. Imagine a 20 year old coming in saying they need an assistant to get them to work on time.......would anyone hire this person over the other people who just show up on time on their own? Think about it.

My father would punch me in the face if I behaved like this at his age. And no, that's not child abuse its called being a 'dad' and knocking some sense into me. The lack of male role models is having disastrous affects on society when this is accepted, rather than ridiculed and treated like nonsense - which it is.

I find the risk with a 4th rounder to be kinda low for what kind of potential high reward you can get out of this guy. Just think back to 2011 with how dominant Mathieu truly was. Is his character in question..certainly. But you gotta take these risks sometimes because if it all works out then your team is that much better. Ive constructed this mindset because I am from Baltimore and have been around what the Ravens have done for years. Ozzie is one of the best gms in the NFL and over years and years he has taken risks on players with questionable character. They just won a super bowl.

Also, Burfict was signed by Cincy last year, high risk player but definitely paid off for their team. The way I put it is, I saw this front office spend a fourth rounder on a Clyde Gates because of speed and that didnt help us one bit, he is now a jet. I would rather risk my fourth rounder on a guy who was on the heisman list, a dominant defensive force even though he has those issues. Just my opinion though because I really feel the reward out of this guy can be big time.

 

I'm all in...I've seen enough in his games to know he's a great football player who didnt play with a lot of technique, now I've seen him when he DOES focus on technique at the combine, it was an awesome display, I'm fully aware of the flags, but I would take the hit on this special player..I'd take him at 3b..

As i've said before, not that impressive physically. It's all about intangibles for him, and those are tainted by being a proven humongous knucklehead.

 

Obviously you've never been in a small town. I always laugh when people talk about south Fla being such a bad influence when it comes to drugs etc b/c it ain't nearly as pervasive as being out in the middle of nowhere with less around to keep you preoccupied. Typically the less there is to do the higher the rate of drug use.

 

Considering many thought he'd be a high 4.5 to 4.6 guy, I'd say 4.5 was pretty good, and his first time looked faster. The guy who met him after his run said he had him at 4.37.

I have no idea where you are getting the idea that, "the less there is to do in a location, the greater the drug use". I worked in law enforcement in South Florida for over 25 years. I can assure you that statistics clearly show that the major illegal drug markets are in the largest cities in the United States. While small cities or towns certainly have their share of illegal drug activity, it is no where close to the illegal drug activity which takes place in major urban areas like South Florida.

I have lived in South Florida for over 50 years and I think it is a great place to live. I just don't know if the Dolphins should draft a player who is known to have a drug issue and expose him to all the temptations available to a rich young athlete, who obviously has a history which shows he doesn't make the right decisions and still needs to grow up. Perhaps drafting him in the 6th or 7th round would be worth the risk, but any higher pick just makes no sense to me.

 

I understand that you have a lot of experience living in So Fla and as a police office, but there is definitely something to say about small towns leading to high drug and alcohol abuse. My future mother in grew up in a small town in Iowa and has shared many times how all the high school kids did when growing up was drink and party because there is nothing else to do. Not saying one is worse, but there is validity in the "the less there is to do the more likely kids turn to drugs and alcohol".

 

We'll waste a pick on Gates, Egnew (know it's early), and Pat White... But stay away from the Honey Badger? You guys are crazy. We are knocking on him for getting an assistant to help him stay clean? You guys are crazy/ He's a young kid who knows he can't keep himself in check. I'm sure we'd all want Dez Bryant on our team right now and he has an assistant to keep his as$ in check. Many high school age children experiment with alcohol and sometimes drugs, no matter how big or small the city might be. This is just a fact of life. My point in being worried about the Dolphins drafting a player with a known drug history is that this player isn't in high school. He is old enough to get in bars on South Beach and throughout South Florida and he will be rich enough to buy what he wants.
I just think that he is a HUGE question mark, from a maturity viewpoint.

This coaching staff didn't want to deal with the immaturity of Vontae Davis and I just don't see them having any interest in dealing with a player, who in the last year was kicked off his college football team because of the use of drugs. To me, Davis is a far superior player and there was no drug issue with him, yet the Dolphins didn't want him on the team. Why they would want to draft a player who is immature and with a known drug problem, is beyond me? As I stated earlier, a 6th or 7th round pick might be okay to take a chance on him, but I would hope that the Dolphins wouldn't waste a higher pick than that on him.

 

Yes, but we're not talking about High School kids looking for something to do. We're talking about rich athletes looking to live in the fast lane. It really depends on the maturity of the athlete, IMO.

You can't say the dude hit "rock bottom" yet based on his being kicked out of LSU. He was out of the program and getting national feature Sports Illustrated "hero" reclamation pieces written about him like a week before getting busted for having 8 baggies of weed in his house plus common seller paraphernalia like electronic scales, etc.

Oh but NOW he's hit rock bottom, right? As he gets invited to the NFL Combine, gets a sh!t ton of press and attention from the media, something like 18 teams meeting with him at the Senior Bowl even though Roger Goodell expressly asked NFL teams not to meet with him, Miami bringing in their whole staff to talk to him, etc.

Give me a break. Your 50 years in south Fla sums up everything. Get the heck out of your house, visit some small towns, I mean really visit them, and then tell me the drug rate is higher than what you'd find in the typical south Fla nightlife scene. The statistics don't mean sh**. There are more kids experimenting with meth, crack, and other drugs in small, nothing-to-do towns then you'll ever see in your typical south fla school.

 

yes, and if you're a rich athlete there are parties and night life scenes waiting for you at EVERY NFL city, so the argument that trouble will find you easier in South Fla is a little extreme. Trouble will find you anywhere if you go out looking for it; however in a place like South Fla that offers so much to do and keep you preoccupied, it can actually make it easier to steal your attention away from substance abuse. However in a smaller football town you're like, "Ehhh, nothing to do today so I might as well sit around and kill off this 5th of whiskey and hit the bong a few times".

 

I might go in a different direction, just to be devil's advocate and keep the debate going. If I'm Ireland & Philbin I'd consider calling the team up or get the ones still in Miami together and ask them how they'd feel about having Mathieu as a teammate.

If the consensus is ok, I'd let it be known that the only reason he'd be drafted is b/c of the locker room presence and accountability level this team has achieved and that they would have to agree to work as a team to help keep him on the right path and make sure he fits in, and tell them that if they succeed then in the future we might try to bring in a few other talented players we think the team can help conform to the pack as well. So in a way it'd be saying that we're rewarding this team's hard work and achieved-accountability by seeing if they can't help make an impact on a talented player who needs some direction.

 

Honestly how can you say a small corner running a 4.50 was lighting it up ? I dont care what else he can do..... if he's 5'7/ sub-200 lbs and runs a 4.5 he's going to have a hard time making it in the nfl. Its easier for a WR like Welker facing Dbs of similar size.... Mathieu would be a target for opposing offensive coords.

We're not talking about Janoris Jenkins here. Mathieu was a top 10 college player before being kicked off the team...... but it doesnt mean he's a top ten pick. Talented ? Yes... very.... Potential ? Very limited. And than there's the personal issues. Sounds like a 6th round pick to me.
