I'm knocking on 40 and between taking care of my dad the past 2 years and working from home on the computer, I've decided I wanted to get some movement and exercise back in my life.
Now, working out bores the snot out of me. So I thought a martial art would be good. Problem for me with just about every other form, is the mysticism and conformity. That's the thing that appeals to me about KM, is that there are no rules.
Anyone know KM or have taken it? Is it a bad idea to take it up at this stage in my life? Thoughts?

Well FinD, I've heard mixed things about Krav Maga
Two different styles, lots of charlatans etc.
Thought about MMA stuff?Fin D likes this. -
Ever considered learning to box? There are some pretty good books/DVDs you can teach yourself if you are just looking for a workout and not to compete. This is less expensive than joining a boxing gym, although if you can afford it, I would join a proper boxing gym to learn the basics and have access to the equipment. Plus, if are done correctly (i.e., with humility and discipline), it will toughen and sharpen all the parts of your body needed to become a real-life badass.

I've boxed, taken judo and karate. None of them disappointed me. I would try it. If you don't like it. Try something else.
But yeah I lift also and nothing has pushed me as much as boxing has.Fin D likes this. -
For boxing I go to the communicty centers. You may not be guaranteed a trainer but usually if you ask someone will help. Also here they give classes in boxing for like 15 dollars a month.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm interesting. Maybe it's more an ethnic thing and was voted in? I don't know but we have 4 of them here. I've been to 3 of them. All 3 are what you need.

My experiences with KM have been pretty good. Practical for the most part, effective if you are athletic enough to execute, like all martial arts. Dont know how much of a"workout" it will be, but there are worse ways to spend your time and money.
And def not too old to do this.Fin D likes this. -
Its entire economy was based on horses. So the small downtown area there's people with money and people without living next door to each other, because the real money live away from town in horse country. Then there's the Shores (there are no shores, its just named that because of a big housing development there) that is the white ghetto. Meth and suburban gangs. Then there's Silver Springs which is out in the middle of the Ocala National Forest. That's where I live. There's the real hard core rednecks. The one that think Ocala is too city-like. Then there's the various denizens of the forest like the Rainbow People (think hippies meet zombies), the sex offenders who can't live anywhere else, and the extreme hard core rednecks that think Silver Springs is too city-like. Plus its the body dumping ground for serial killers. -
TBH, knowing how you think, the type of free-spirited psyche and non-conforming nature/mentality you have, I'd peg you as a Jeet June Do guy based on its philosophy and principles, including stuff like Bruce Lee's theory of "being like water" and the natural/spiritual essence of the art making it more than just a way to exercise and kick ***, which I think you would appreciate.
...... but then again you are nearing 40 so Krav Maga might be the way to go. -
KM is still about warfare. Boxing is a sport, and is more about getting in shape and point fighting for example. But, you would spar, and being able to practice your art full force against an active opponent is pretty cool. Same goes for the grappling focused arts, which you've dismissed for some reason. Fear of intimacy?

Again, a martial art is the direction I want to go for exercise and KM is the only one that I've seen that meets my criteria. Plus, I don't expect to ever be attacked with a weapon or fight for my life, but I like the idea of having a chance to get through that if the situation were to arise. And for the record, don't let my liberal-ness fool you, if anyone tries to hurt my wife or god kids, that person's life is less to me than bacteria. -
I've trained a little Krav. The main advantage to it is that the moves are very intuitive. Most styles take years for you to even be as good as a natural fighter (if you're not natural). I would say it's the easiest MA to reach a competent level at quickly. As for how good of a workout it is, that will depend entirely on the teacher.

I like Krav quite a bit though. Much more practical than a lot of MA.
Why don't you like lifting weights though? If you don't like working out to begin with, you're probably not going to like.. working out.Fin D likes this. -
Learning something like KM will get me moving again and teach me things I've always wanted to learn. -
I've done a bit. It's a very different fighting form that inflicts injury. That's what it's for, not to fight but to survive and to protect yourself.
Ya it's good. -
-Growing stationary
-awful diets
-heavy smoking
Etc etc, for example it is now proven if even senior citizens mildly lift weights they see huge increases in strength and flexibility and bone density. -
I think you should follow your dream of becoming a dallas cowboy cheerleader fin-d

IMO, load up on protein and water as the muscles have to replenish themselves from all of the micro tears.
As I've aged, what I've found is I eat less, and never eat prior to working out. It feels like a lead weight dragging me down.Fin D likes this. -

I'm sure you can find some "friends" to help. Why not set up a ring in the backyard, cover each other in used motor oil, get naked and wrestle? Isn't that the usual Friday night fanfare in those parts?
