The likely hood of Thomas getting cut was slim to none anyway. If Thomas goes into the season as #2, it's no guarantee it will stay that way. Lamar Miller ended up stealing reps away at the end of last year from Thomas. Unlike Miller, Gray doesn't seem to have the blocking identification issues Miller had. If DT doesn't produce, I have no doubt Gray will take carries away. Especially in short yardage.

I agree. I don't think Gray is going to take carries from Miller. I think Miller is super talented and will surprise most NFL pundits and fans. Miller didn't see a ton of action last year because of his issues with pass protection. If he didn't have those issues, I think he would of taken DT's job away outright at some point and become the #2 back. Seeing as Miller is #1 and DT is #2, I think it's possible Gray supplants Thomas as #2 as the season goes forward... Assuming DT continues to be mediocre.

 

well, if Thomas hypothetically contributes to a good 1-2 punch, why would you want to let him go? Wouldn't it be in our best interest to have Thomas show up and perform well than hope he flops so we can cut him? Heck, why stop there? Why not hope Tannehill flops as well? Why not hope for a blown-out Mike Wallace knee?

 

I doubt that...Jake Long passed on us, not vice-versa.

 

As far as I know, Miami offered a "competitive" deal. Unless someone has actual numbers, we didn't offer a better deal than St. Louis. We had every opportunity and the cap space to pull the trigger and we didn't. ATEOTD, I think there's truth to what Ireland is saying. We also didn't pull the trigger on Albert, so there must of been some confidence in Martin. Even if it isn't ironclad.

 

Unless Thomas puts away his vagina he will continue to be less than mediocre. I hit the ground harder after passing out drunk than he hits the hole running.

 

No Ireland didn't want to look bad, and is gambling, plain & simple.

Look, we paid a # 2 pick to move up to # 3 in the draft, and the player you took, can't get on the field. You have the chance to replace Long with a top valued OL, and instead passed and took a player that MIGHT play on 3rd downs, at least the 1st couple of years.

Unless this works out, Ireland has once again blown it, and set the franchise back. Yet he's still here.....:pity:

 

Of course Ireland thinks Thomas is a decent NFL RB. He traded up to draft him and he just can't admit that Thomas has been another failed draft pick. I expect Thomas to make the team, but I also expect him to get injured AGAIN, and end up spending most of the season on the injury list.

I'll believe in Ireland only when this team actually has more wins than losses in the regular season. Until that happens, I will continue to feel that he is one of the worst GM's in the NFL. Spending a lot of money in free agency doesn't make someone a good GM. To me, the Dolphins must finish at least 9-7 this year or else Ireland has to go.

Now you're just being absurd. Is anyone here myopic to think that Jordan won't be starting for us next year? We have a very good front 4 on the DL. We have 3 good LBs to boot. We have the luxury of using Jordan based on his strengths only. that will only make our defense better. as Jordan gets healthy and acclimates to the NFL, gets stronger... he'll be one of our best front 7.

 

We've both stated our dislike and distrust of Ireland this morning.

 

did we play Tom Brady 11 times that year? and hate to tell you bud, but a lot of teams with great records had favorable schedules that year or play in a really weak division.

 

What's absurd about trying to win NOW. Ireland passed on trying to help the immediate team for a possible future ? You've just had 4 losing seasons in a row. Urgency was needed here not the luxury of waiting for the future.

 

We also had Pennington drop from the sky and have one of if not his best season ever, combined with the easiest schedule and no Tom Brady. If Pennington does not do that, and we'd have gone with Cade McCown as it was looking, do you really think we'd have won 11 games that year ?

2008 was five years ago. I don't understand how 11-5 five years ago gets you a pass for not having a winning season the next five years.

Yea, he was a free agent, but who here ever thought in June of that year, that he'd drop in to us ?? He had a prior relationship with the Fatcells and that's why he ended up here, giving us a legit, albeit flawed veteran QB to lead this team. Couple that with the weak schedule and Brady's injury and suddenly we're in the playoffs... We all knew it was a flawed team, but yeah, those factors made the difference..

 

This. Ireland is clearly not the best GM in the league (I'd kill to have Ozzie Newson for example), but the team did have a winning record under Ireland already so there should be a modicum of belief in him. Doesn't mean you need to have a lot of belief, but you have to recognize that the playoffs are actually possible while he runs the team.

 

We finished 11-5, but still lost to NE once (and I would argue the win we had was a result of the NE defense not because of shortcomings in their offense; it was the wildcat game), so at best with Brady not injured we would be 10-6. That may have made us miss the playoffs, but we still would have had a winning record.

 

The facts that Ireland tried to re-sign Long and tried to trade for Albert, and spent last season swearing up and down that Martin wasn't drafted to replace Long in a year, disproves Ireland's "of course Martin at LT was the plan all along" assertion.

For the people referring to 2008: I thought Parcells was running the show, while Opie just sat there, and watched with his thumbs up his ***?

 

I just don't get it. It seems most people on here want to blame Parcells for the bad drafts and bad free agent selections while he was with the Dolphins. Yet you want Ireland to receive the credit for the 2008 team. I'll bite, but that doesn't give him a pass for the past four years when the team never finished above 500.

I have said many times that Ireland should be retained as the teams GM if the Dolphins finish above 500 this year. I am just not convinced that he made the right decisions in free agency or in selecting Tannehill in 2012. Of course the team has every opportunity to prove me wrong this year and I hope they do.

My question to you is, if the Dolphins finish 8-8 or worse, do you still think Ireland should remain the teams GM beyond this year?
