I know we have another year and half to worry about it but it sure seems like we are going to have a strike in 2011.
I feel that would be the year we will have a real chance at the super bowl.I can see them bringing in scabs again and putting us in hole we can't get out. That would be our luck.
-
who knows... we said they'd fix the whole cap thing, and it hasnt happend... I could see a strike in 2011...but exactly why? I dont understand the full reason
-
This sounds like neither side is going to budge. -

They'd be absolute idiots to strike.

The unemployment rate is growing higher each month and people are going to be turned off of the nfl if they go on strike when the country is in such dire straits. -

What about them?
They initiated this by abandoning the previous agreement 2 yrs ago, now the dip**** TV networks have prepaid 4 billion dollars for the 2011 season whether there are games or not.
Meaning the Owners can simply pocket the 4 billion and save the salaries they would be bound to pay the players, they have every incentive to lock the players out and pay themselves 4 billion dollars split 32 ways.
If the owners do lock the players out they had best work something out or I'm pretty much done with the NFL.gafinfan likes this. -
It wouldn't be a strike from what I understand, it would be a lockout.
Strike, the players refuse to play (they like the CBA, and want the same one to be resigned).
Lockout, the Owners tell the players they don't like the current agreement, and are not obligate to pay them because it's expired.
Anyways, thats just semantics.
The owners know they stand more to lose by a Lockout than the players do. And the players know that too. Although the legal help they brought in does scare me a bit. It says they are in this one for the long haul.
I'm fingers crossed, but pretty darn worried. -
I wasnt even concerned until recently. Things dont sound so great. It would be a disgrace if there was infact a lockout in 2011.
-
As for what I'd do, the last real deal strike was in 87, and it lasted 5 or 6 games iirc and everything worked out, this one feels differently, in 87 it was clear there would be a resolution, in 2010...not so much.
The UFL and CFL for me, I happen to like both leagues, but learned the hard way with the CFL it is best to like a team in your time zone (EST) because staying up until 1 am watching some Western Canadian football team to finish a game sucketh and sucketh hardeth. -

Strikes have really hurt the major sports in the past. Baseball and Hockey both suffered greatly from their strikes and I dont think that NFL wants to go through that. They right now are the biggest sport in America, I don't think they can afford to gamble that. Stranger things have happened and we are talking about the root of all evil, which changes everything and everybody.

That's short term thinking though. Most of these guys didn't become millionaires through short term thinking.Click to expand...
If they were worried, they never would have let it come to this, the whole situation is/was entirely preventable.
Apparently the beef is the NFLPA received 52% of the revenues, the Owners want that down around 41%, 11% of 4 billion is....and that is what this supposedly is about, and the Owners want a Rookie Salary Cap ontop of the reduction in player's overall salaries.
They offer nothing in return for those concessions aside from "we won't lock you out"Click to expand... -
Or greedy, they all have a 125 million dollar payday waiting for them if they do lock the players out.
Which is another reason why States should not finance a stadium, the owners can pull the plug on the season and stick the taxpayers with the bill for a stadium that is not going to be used.Click to expand...Click to expand... -
Unions suck. They are the worst thing ever and do nothing to help business. These guys have a lifestyle that is better...hell, millions times better...than the old guys ever could have dreamed of. They have the world at their feet...the top game in the market...the ability to play at the highest level. Yet this isn't enough for them. Just like Fehr in baseball, Smith isn't out for the players best interest. He is out for his own agenda and that alone. He doesn't care about the game. He doesn't care about anyone but making his pockets fatter. These guys only have a limited window for which to play this game and taking a year away from them hurts them more than anything. It hurts them financially and in playing time. He doesn't care about that. He has already put the pieces in place for the strike: states that they won't want to play under a cap after 1 year of no cap. states that they owners get a cut and then the players get 52% of the remainder. states that on a scale of 1-10, it is a 14 in terms of there being a strike. He talks all how it can't be done, rather than how it can be done. Screw Smith and screw the union.
The only players that have gripes are the old vets who have no benefits and no pensions. Those are legit gripes. These guys today have nothing that they should be griping about. You don't like it....go play arena football or go play in the CFL! -
That said with the Dolphins and local Super Bowl committee crying about the needed improvements for Sun Life Stadium. Improvements they want the public to pay for, even though the stadium is fully owned by the team. When and if we make those improvements do we get paid back when Ross sells the stadium ?Click to expand...

I don't want to see a strike but hey if it happens there isn't much we can do about it.

If they do it will cost both sides a lot of money. There will be fans that won't come back, because the prices are just getting away from reality of the blue collar hard working family. If they did not learn from baseball, then they will learn the hard way. I myself will probably not spend any money NFL wise.

That will be the end of NFL Sunday Ticket for me for sure. That will bound to double in price and be out of my reasonable range. Why are these guys so greedy (on both sides) and about to kill the goose that laid the golden egg ???Click to expand...DolfanJake, gafinfan and Killerphins like this.

By the time they see the light bro, it maybe too late, and the damage could be very severe. I think they are totally under estimating the power of the fan, and what we have meant to the game and the league.:wink2:Click to expand...DolfanJake and Fin Fan In Cali like this.

we the fan are the customer
the fan is the reason they pushed so hard to put this game on television long ago
also the reason teams build bigger stadiums
its so corporate now and everyone has there hand in the cookie jar
i put a freeze on my nfl gear spending a while back
of course i bought an afc east championship t shirt after last season and all
and purchase sunday ticket to watch the games which could be a small part of the problem
going back to your post honestly not a day goes by when i dont somehow feel im being cheated

Fear not! we will have SuperBowl potential next year
(needn't worry about 2011)
the holes are filling in quickly
the team is collectively stepping up
very few needs: ILB, NT, WR, maybe a FS & TE
we're three solid moves from a run on the BigEnchilada  we will contend in 2010 -

Im not one to buy into alot of the talk going on right now. In fact, expect the sound bites to get alot worse. But, thats how things like this go alot of times, and both sides finally come to the table an work it out. Its a very expensive game of chicken.
One thing you havent heard about, is what the impact this will have on other things like networks CBS, Espn etc. You can guarantee they dont want a strike. Millions of ad revenue will be gone. They will put pressure to get something done.
