I'm not a big fan of Porters (because of his antics) but he is a great football player. Having said that, I'm just wondering where all the "Porter is overrated" people are now a days?

hayell no he's not over rated. he's not under rated either, though.
-
You could make a case that he's underrated. He very quietly has the most sacks in the NFL.

Nice to have a healthy Porter who is finally being utilized and playing where he belongs.
GARDENHEAD, Colorado Dolfan and MS4FINS like this. -
He's making a case for DPOY.
Has a defensive player ever won MVP? It's far fetched especially not on a winning team but who else could be MVP the way this season is going? Brees is playing really good but no one is standing out so far to me for MVP.
I know it would only happen in la-la land so don't flame me. -
it just goes to show one thing...
fans are going to HAVE to learn to be patient with players. The same thing that happened with Ronnie, same thing happening with Ginn. Not everyone comes into the league and onto new teams and become instant stars. Guys like Adrian Peterson, Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan...those guys aren't the rule...they're the exception. And I know you're talking about Porter, who is a 31 year old veteran, but the rules still apply. When players go to new teams, new leagues, etc. They usually need time to learn the system or the speed or the rules, etc.
Bottom line, you gotta be patient.unluckyluciano, GARDENHEAD, Phinz420 and 5 others like this. -
matt roth? -

For MVP right now its Brees. ROY is a toughie though, lots of candidates. Have to give the nod to Matt Ryan atm though.
As for defenders and MVP, the only one I can think that may have won is Ray Lewis in their Super Bowl year, but im not sure he did. -
-
Is it a coinsidence that we have new coaches and Porter is playing much better or is it we just have coaches who know how to best utilize his skills? And is it possible at 31 Porter could be having the best season of his career?
-
-
-
yeah. i think he'll be good but i'm concerned about all positions of this team except LT. I mean i'm not 100% they'll all be around. If I had to pick a few guys who I could see getting moved one would be roth. i think they'll have patience with him, though.
-
I would not say overrated. I know the Steeler fans still say he is washed up and done. Even my friend that watches with me each week.
I think he is one of the most hated players, people hate him unless he plays for your team. -
i'd rather have him than TO or ocho cinco.
-
No, he's not overrated this season. I don't know about anyone else, but my problem with him last season was that he was being paid a buttload of money and not producing. Now, he's showing he was worth the money. I don't regret anything I said about him last season though...he's a veteran and a former pro bowler. You get that kind of money you step up and contribute out of the gate or you're not living up to your contract.
-
My criticism of him was, and still remains, that he has a big mouth and wasn't prepared to play last year. True he was playing out of position because of JT's presence, but he didn't even know the playbook a few weeks into the season. That shouldn't happen to a rookie, let alone a seasoned vet who is trying to make a positive impression on his new team.
This year he seems to really have turned his play around, but the mouth is still going. He is making things happen on the field, he needs to stop making things happen off of it. He's done a great job so far, hope he keeps it up.gafinfan likes this. -
Hes always been an off-field guy though, I dont think it will stop. Fortunately hes not the locker room cancer type like TO or anywhere near as detrimental as a guy like Pacman. I can live with what he does as long as hes not getting taken in by the Police or you start seeing him screaming at the HC during a loss or something.
He is a football player, he plays hard, he tries to motivate his teammates and lead by example. If he causes a bit of a ruckus with his mouth ... eh so be it I guess. -

Heck no, JP is not overrated, he is having the season we all thought he could have had last year teamed up with JT.
What I hope is he can sustain this high level of play and allow us to draft a ILB on day 1 instead of a OLB who can rush the passer, that would move our "can we make the playoffs" time table forward. -
I thought he was overrated until this season. And going into this season he was. The guy didn't do anyhting since he came to miami, and he's finally living up to his obsurd contract.
-
-
Is he overrated? Not unless your a Steelers fan.
I love what Porter is doing this season (not like everyone else doesn't too, obviously). If he wants to talk a little smack then that's fine. Like Aqua and others said before me, as long as he backs it up.
I think you could make a case that his smack going into the NE game mentally helped our defense. NE could look intimidating to rookies like Langford or Merling. Saying Cassel is just a back-up over and over, brings that offense off it's pedestal in the minds of some of our players. He sure as hell backed up that talk as well.
3 Other Thing To Think About:
1. Sparano is the direct opposite of Cameron (Thank f'ing God). He's one of those guys that demands the respect of his players and vice versa, no **** taking, tough S O B. Kind of reminds you of another guy that Porter's had a lot of success with..... Bill Cowher. I think Sparano and Porter will never have issues because they share a lot of the same personality traits.
2. Porter won't lose the respect of his teammates unless he keeps talking **** and his play falls off completely. Seeing as that our DC knows that he excels at OLB (huge shock there btw) and he is healthy, I don't see that happening.
3. Jason Who? No disrespect to JT, but remember all those people wondering how we were going to have any kind of a pass-rush or D last year when we traded away our best player? I haven't heard a peep out of that crowd all season.
Bottom line is that Porter is our leader on the field. He's obviously the face of our defense and making a strong case for being our Captain. His production has been solid. He fights through double-teams and keeps making big plays every week, no disappearing acts.
Keep it up Joey!funkdat likes this. -
That's what this team needed for so long .....a real leader, as good as JT and ZT were/are they were never that, and now JP isn't in their shadow so he can be himself even more...........and thats being 10 times the leaders JT and ZT ever were.
We haven't had a real leader since Dan Marino.............
Anyways i think your way to criticall of are team leaders. Not just JP but Chad Pennington as well, after all you are the same person that was getting on him about not throwing the football 40 yards with zip.:tantrum:sorry lol -
-
I think people who are very into:
"being humble at all times, winning quitely, never talking before or after a contest" etc.
Do not like Porter because a lot of the time, he portrays the opposite of those ideas.
Now, those of us who:
"don't mind talking a little friendly trash, like to be loud and aggressive towards our opponents, enjoy sharing words with rivals, freely voice our opinions at all times" etc.
Enjoy Porter because he illustrates and symbolizes a lot of what we enjoy about competition, football, interactions with others, etc.
Now don't take my theory to heart because I'm not trying to say that either type of personality is better or worse. We're all different, entitled to our opinions and thoughts. I'm simply stating why I think we see such a sharp division between two different groups of people.
I really think that Porter is one of those love/hate players. The deciding factor in most cases, is what kind of personality the fan has. However, the one thing all of us as fans can agree on is that this man has been a monster on the field this year! Love him or hate him, he's definitely helping us win games. -
Both times i got an apology, a pay raise, and there respect.
I get what L2G is saying but respect is a two way street. -
I don't care if he talks just so long as he backs it up every Sunday!! Was he misused last year, yes but, he's a pro and should still give us his best. He didn't do that plus being disloyal to the very person who brought him here, Cam Cameron. To me Joey P is a "me" guy and thats ok just as long as he backs it up on the field. The minute that stops I don't want to see or hear him anymore!:wink2:
-
I'd also like to add .......he has the most sacks in the NFL for an OLB in the NFL since 2000.So if anything he's underrated.

Great players are naturally arrogant. Some carry it to extremes. Joey certainly carries it pretty far, if not to those extremes. But the fact that he's playing in a familiar spot in the D and over the injury from the previous season, he's playing pretty well now. I wouldn't fault his arrogance though...that's part of what makes him good.
If you were around when Marino was in his first few years, he was pretty arrogant as well...but that's part of what makes these guys as good as they are...funkdat likes this. -
porter is a team captain along with holliday and pennington, right?
-
Keep in mind that the players weren't without blame last year, the coaches only gameplan, it's the players that need to execute. The fact that Porter didn't even know the playbook a few weeks into the season tells me that Porter really should have been the last person in that room to open his mouth.
And then it all goes back to my original concern when it comes to guys like Porter, how do his actions impact the young guys? Do you want a loose cannon yappin' his gums all the time infront of your young players? If he's doing that to the coach, does that make the youngin's think it's okay to disrespect the coach when things don't go their way?
You have to put your personal feelings about Cam aside and look at this from the perspective of management structure. Cam is the boss, he shares some responsibility for poor production, but the workers weren't getting their jobs done either. Does that give the workers a right to rise up and mutiny? And what does that tell the interns and new hires when they see their fellow workers yelling in the bosses face?
Respect is something that has been lost thanks to inflated salaries and ESPN highlights making individual players bigger than the game. That doesn't give players the right to act like primadonnas in the lockerroom. :wink2:
Sooner or later people become desensitized to the trashtalk and then what are you left with?
Lets not forget that less than a year ago pretty much everyone here shared the view that Penny was a "noodlearm" and couldn't throw deep. That didn't all of a sudden change because he put on the Miami Dolphins uniform. :wink2:
I like Chad and think he's a very good QB, I just think that Ginn is being misused and what he brings to the team is going to waste.
Again, I'll give Porter credit for the how well he's played so far this year and I hope he keeps it up, but I won't overlook character flaws just because a player is doing well. The Cowboys are a good example of that, they have alot of good players who aren't exactly model citizens and that has hurt them IMO. You need your players to come together as a team and work as one out on the field, you don't need a bunch of individuals out there trying to make ESPN highlight reels on every play. TO is a great player, I wouldn't want him anywhere near this team. Chad Johnson is a great player, I wouldn't want him anywhere near this team. Randy Moss is a great player, I wouldn't want him anywhere near this team.
Character is one of the things I look for in a player, it's very important to me and when I see a player running his yap, getting into fights in a casino, disparaging players on other teams, dressing down his coach infront of his teammates, not getting himself ready to play and knowing he playbook a few weeks into the season......then I'm going to call a spade a spade. :wink2:Rocky Raccoon likes this. -
Porter is our best
Nobody on the defencive side of the ball have stepped up as much as Porter Has. He has single handedly changed the pace of the game in our favor countless times this season.
Say what you want about his comments and attitude but he is the reason we have energy on defence this year and one of the only reasons that we are applying pressure as well. -
L2G, I understand the reverence a coach deserves, but there is a limit to everything. To me, if you can impeach the damn president of the united states, you can impeach a coach of an NFL football team. Not a 100% analogy, but my point stands.
To be a coach, you need constituents. Those are the players. Once he lost that, his business card and placard said coach, but he wasn't their coach anymore.like2god likes this.
