Miles Austin was drawing double teams and he was still garbage, no thank you. I'll take Davone Bess everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

 

My thoughts as well. After that game against KC when Austin racked up 250 yards, teams sat up and took notice of him.
In spite of the increased attention that Miles Austin gained, Roy Williams still only managed one 100 yard game (against GB - 5 catches, 105 yards).
I think the guy is more talented that Bess, but he's nowhere near as motivated.
So....no.

 

No thanks. Bess is an overachiever. More than is expected. Roy is underachieving big time. Even if its was the same yardstick, I like Bess.

Are you kidding me?
Roy is making 2010: $3,452,629 (+ $9.5 million guaranteed option bonus). He is also on the downside of his career.

Bess is making $470,000 this season. Bess is young and a better receiver at this point in his career.

I wouldn't even make the trade for equal salaries plus Dallas throwing in a 5th.

All Roy Williams has done so far is show that he's really not a #1WR then last year showed he's really not a #2WR.

People in the NFL and ex players have said over and over that Roy can only run two routes.SO he's going to be a #4WR real soon because he can't do all the things you have to do to play in the slot.

WOw but wait is his ego ready to be a #4WR and make #4WR money???? I don't think so , i think he'll be out of the NFL in two years.

 

I'd rather wait and see if Dallas parts ways with Patrick Crayton, who I think could be real valuable to our team on STs and on offense.

 

I rather have the other Roy Williams to play WR.....that guy rots....

 

Same here, Crayton would be a lower cost alternative, and that is "if" the 6 kick returners on the roster already don't pan out.

R Williams contract is just to large for what he offers and his effort level, he is in yr 6 or 7, and he is still a very raw Wr.

 

I might even do that for Patrick Clayton, who they're much more open to letting go, for whatever reason. I think they've paid way too much for Williams and letting him go now would make Jerruh look too bad.

That said, as much as I like Bess, Cammy can do all the things Bess does for us. And lest we not forget, Marshall is even better at doing the middle of the field stuff that Bess does. If we did acquire Williams, he'd be replacing Hartline as the #2 WR and that would be a solid tandem of WRs. The pressure would be off Williams so that he could just go out and play. This might even make sense for the Boys' as they don't really have a Bess type receiver in their stable. However, letting Williams go for that little seems unlikely by Jones, if for no other reason than to save his own face, which is very important to him...

Sorry to rain on your parade here, but just what indication is there that White can return kicks ?? Has he shown that he can anything yet ??? Me thinks not...

Yeah, we need some Forum fodder now that Ginn is gone, bringing in Williams would be worth at least 50 threads or more during the season.

 

Watch #94 at about 15 seconds into the video, he tripped White from behind so he was falling down when Taylor was coming in to hit him before he reached the first down marker, basically it was a perfect hit, White couldn't protect himself.

Pay no mind to it, I once read a post that stated White has tiny hands, when in fact his mitts are larger than Chad Henne's now that Ginn is gone some folks are fitting White for the cement shoes...foolishly imho.

 

The ONLY reason it might be foolish is because of the investment we have in him....if Pat White wasn't a 2nd round pick, he wouldn't have made the 53 last year and he certainly wouldn't make it this year, considering all the young talent we have

There's far more reason to be pessimistic..... than optimistic, concerning the diminutive one. Just taking shots at him is one thing. But there's more than enough ammo to back up anyone with a negative opinion of Pat White and his future as an NFL player..

be serious... he got hit helmet to helmet while falling down so unable to position his body to take the hit... and he got knocked out... its football it happens, that does not mean hes "too small" or too weak to play in the NFL...

 

I'm more concerned with the fact that in order to throw from the pocket, he'd have to "jump-pass" the ball. And even more concerned with the fact he's a huge waste of practice time.... the kid IMO, is just not worth developing.

 

No, the fact that he got knocked galley west doesn't mean he's too small, but the fact that he never scares anyone running between the tackles may mean just that because that takes most of the WC running attack away from him. Further, it also appears that he couldn't hit the broad side of a bull's butt with a banjo in the passing game, which would have a whole lot more in determining his ability or his inability to play in the NFL. Unless he shows some marked improvement in those areas, he does fall into the same category as Ginn - a player someone took a flyer on who cannot fly, not at this level.

 

The only issue I have with this statement is that this isn't college any longer. He left less athletic players in the dust at WVU, but there aren't that many less athletic players at this level. Here, he's just another guy. That's what is concerning about us taking White so high in the draft.

I'm not going to hijack the thread into a White thread, but that hit has nothing to do with why he will or will not make good at this level. Those hits happen and most players would have been shaken by it. That's really immaterial to his skill set, which at this level seems to be lacking. He's a guy without a position....

I digress, sorry....as to Williams, I have to agree that we sort of lack a #2 WR. Hartline might be that guy, but he's the only one on the roster at this point. It was hoped, I presume, that Turner might be that guy opposite our #1, but that hasn't happened yet either... I love what Cammy and Bess bring to the table, but they are #3 WRs. They are very similar to each other in style, except that Cammy is a little bigger and slightly faster when healthy. Both have a knack for finding a hole to sit in and get the ball. Both catch reasonably well. Both are quicker rather than faster and both have the same strengths as Marshall, except that Marshall is light years better than either.

What we miss now that Ginn is gone, is someone to stretch the field opposite Marshall on first and second downs. That is why I was slightly surprised they traded Ginn. I would have thought they'd want to trade Cammy or Bess. Perhaps they did, but Cammy coming off the injury might have been a reason for him not being desirable and Bess lack of speed was probably his issue.

Williams, although a bust in Detroit and Dallas so far, could be that complement to Marshall we need. He wouldn't have the pressure of being that #1 WR, #1 draft pick or the reason for trading all the draft picks away to get him as he is in Dallas. He wouldn't be second fiddle to a TE here that's for sure. I don't know that he's the best option, but Bess and 5th isn't that much to find out. However, as I said above, I'd make a similar deal for Crayton, but what do I know...

What does any of that have to do with him returning kicks? Someone said let him return kicks, someone else said he can't, look at this hit he took, and I simply replied that that hit means nothing in regards to his size or ability to play in the NFL.

I have no expectations for White, I did not like the pick and think we could have gotten something more useful, but that doesn't negate the fact that that hit means nothing in the grand scheme of things

 

100% totally DISAGREE. Pat White was active as our #2 QB (over Henne, then Thigpen) a good part of last season. I know it was mainly because of the wildcat, but he was definitely in our plans last season. How can you say he wouldn't even have made last years team? That is absolute craziness.
IMO it is still too early to give up on him. It is only year 2.

 

Talent, motivation, and $ aside. If we move Bess, we add a quasi #2 and lose a slot reciever. doesn't make sense. We have perfect #1, possibly a very good #2(Hartline or Camarillo) and a perfect slot WR.

White was active as our #2 ONLY because of the WC; not mainly. Or I should say because of the coaching staff's hope for his contribution. Otherwise Henne and Thigpen would have been #2. Had we gone by talent that would have been the order.
And I have to agree that had we not used a high pick on him he would have never made final cuts, IMO.
I know you're saying it's too early to give up on him. But the fact is, we start out with..what?...70 some odd players in training camp and end up with 53. Every year an awful lot of first year hopefuls get cut "way too soon". The difference? Most of them are either undrafted FAs, walk ons and 6th and 7th round picks. In other words players that the team didn't heavily invest in.
The only reason I can agree with the thinking that it's way too early to give up on him is because I hate to think about this team wasting (another) 2nd round pick on a QB that isn't any good.
Truth is I don't know what the best avenue to take is with White. What I do know is if Chad Henne is starting and Pennington is going to be our #3. Then I truly hope that Thigpen is our #2. Because if it's White then we're in trouble if Henne gets hurt.

Bottom-line: he was active because coaching staff thought he would be an asset on the field. He would not have been activated just because FO spent a 2nd-round pick on him. He was active to play a role on this team.

As far as final cuts go:
Once again, you might have had an argument, if he was carried on the 53-man roster, but not activated. This was NOT the case. He was a regular on the 45-man active game day roster.

So, I will say it once again (and stand by it):
How can you say he wouldn't even have made last years team? That is absolute craziness.

I am not a huge Pat White fan (or Patrick Turner), but it is crazy how eager everyone is to throw in the towel on a player after one season.
We need to allow a little developmental time before rushing to judgement.

 

No, craziness is having spent the #44 pick in the draft on a guy that should have went no higher than the 5th round.

Craziness is taking an undersized spread QB and spending valuable practice time, teaching him to be a pro set QB

And lastly, craziness would be to cut one of the promising young prospects on this team, to "give" White a roster spot he doesn't have the talent to actually earn.

Craziness was using the wildcat to begin with. Did it work? YES. It was a big part of our playoff run. FO was trying to expand on it with White.

Once again, my debate was concerning Pat White NOT making the team last year. What happens this year remains to be seen.

He is a Dolphin and I will support him, as it is far too soon to give up on a player after one season.

 

Pat White seems to be a decent kid......what I don't like is wasting time on developing him and his "package".....what I don't like is that he's going to cost us a roster spot that could be used on another/better developmental player....

And as far as him making the team last year....... if he'd have been a late round guy or UDFA, he probably doesn't even make the practice squad much less the 53. He was awful in camp......awful

 

Well last year the only roster spot he cost us was our #4 QB whom we cut (I cannot remember who it was). Pat was in our plans all along.

This season, a roster spot is alot tougher to come by. Pennington might start on PUP or get traded. Thigpen might get traded. White might get cut.
It is tough to call this soon.

I hope we keep him. He could become a solid situational player and take over running the wildcat when we lose Ronnie next season. He is still very young and raw.

This guy was going to the Pats in the 2nd or the 3rd per intel. No way he dropped that far.

Roy Williams is garbage. I got to see him play a lot as Dallas is the local TV team. Lazy, poor route running and he make it seem like Ginn dipped his hands in glue. I wouldnt let Dallas pay us to take him, hes that terrible.

Patrick Crayton though would be a perfect fit as a #2-3 guy and special teamer. Proven, gamebreaking ability on returns, speedy deep threat as a support to Mashall. I would trade Camarillo and a low pick for him.

 

williams has had ample opportunity to succeed ... and he just hasn't. He has no excuses, and NO - he hasn't gotten any short end of the stick. He is lazy.

isn't it funny we are now 'concerned' about a #2 WR, when all we cared about up until now was a #1. Ginn was not a #1 or a #2 ... we have a #1 -- and Hartline will prove to be a solid #2, Bess / RGH in the slot is ok ... and CAM as a reliable option if we go to a 4 WR set (along with RB).

i won't go so far as to say we have no worries .... but we are much better postured right now at WR than we have been for quite some time.

IF we want to be concerned -- it would be better served at TE ... albeit, even there -- i think we are capable ... just no real threat

Marshall has changed everything WRT our receiving corps .... and i think we will see that this year -- even TE will reap some benefit.

 

Just a few more thoughts..maybe for clarification.
Pat White had a very bad training camp last year. By all reports his passes were terribly inaccurate. In fact, it was reported that at one point he managed to hit Parcells' golf cart with an overthrown ball. Some believe that had he not been drafted so high, he would have been cut because of his bad training camp. But because we used a 2nd round pick - he was kept.
Most believe we could have easily spent less and gained more.
Thigpen for a 5th for instance. It could be speculated that early on Thigpen could have been had for even less, since the Chiefs knew we were in dire straits for a back up QB, so they were able to ask for a bit more.
IMO none of us "dislikes" Pat White. But neither are we impressed with his contribution so far.
