still don't understand Tannehills throws of 10+ yards being under 50%, why does he lack accuracy at that distance. 21+ every QB has similar numbers comp % unless your name is Nick Foles. But it's that 11-20 area Tannehill needs to improve, and get into that 50-54% range, I don't expect Rodgers or Luck-like 58% from that range but you can't win throwing 44-48% from 11-20, he HAS to show improvement by end of season or else next season may also be very long. Can it be coaching, thus precipitating a coaching change?

Fixed link, that should make things more readable. However, I can't find the word struggle in there, so I have no idea what OP was doing.Claymore95 and Fin D like this. -

I don't think #3 overall picks, especially picks that were traded up for, should be taken out of the game. The player was traded up to get and drafted at #3. That shows that they thought he was football-worthy enough to A) trade up to get him and B) take him high in the 1st round. Neither of those two things suggest that he should be taken off the field during run downs struggling or not. He's the #3 pick. Let him struggle if he struggles. Find out exactly what, when, how, why he struggles and correct in the off-season. Get your trade value worth. Get your #3 pick overall worth. If he can't play due to legit reasons (injury etc) then yes keep him out for long term, but don't take the guy out on run downs because he "can't play the run". He won't improve otherwise IMO.

IMO one of the failings of this coaching staff has been their failure trust the young guys. I think they trust the system over the players too much. You have to have a sound system, but in the NFL you also need to get plays from your playmakers. You can't expect to just out-scheme people and win. That's what made the Steelers and Ravens defenses so good. They had sound systems, but they also let their playmakers use their instincts. It's the same on offense. Yes, RT has to be able to get the ball out on time the majority of the time, but in key situations he has to trust his own athleticism. He has to try to extend the play. That's how great QBs make their OL and WRs look better than they are. My impression is that they don't give RT the freedom to do that.

Dion Jordan's run stop percentage is 5%. Cameron Wake's is 5%. Olivier Vernon's is 3.9%. Vernon's overall run defense grade is -1.4. Dion Jordan's is only -0.5.
It's a small sample size, but if that small sample size is any indication of future outcomes, then Dion Jordan is ALREADY a better run defender than Olivier Vernon, yet they continue to play Vernon.
The other problem with this theory that Jordan isn't playing more because he isn't a great run defender is this. The biggest single contributing factor to wins and losses in the NFL is your pass efficiency differential, and from a defensive standpoint, you effect the oppositions pass efficiency by pressuring the quarterback and forcing turnovers. Joe Philbin knows this, because the first thing he talked about when he got this job was how he really looked at pass efficiency differential. It's why this team is a heavy blitz team, even though the timing of those blitzes are off at times.
Really, the only thing that makes sense to me is that he is getting limited snaps because he is hurt, and they don't want him to become "more hurt".Bpk likes this. -
I see Dallas Thomas and have to seriously ask myself if he could possibly be worse than Tyson Clabo, objectively I don't see how that could be possible, a shopping cart would be more effective then the worst RT in the league, and yet Clabo will march out on Sunday, Thomas will ride the pine pony.
It makes zero sense unless it just boils down to a "trust the System" over a "trust the more physically talented player".
As for Jordan, it would be difficult for me to believe he would not be more effective than Wheeler on every down, and be less effective than say Shelby on obvious passing downs, yet the Staff just does not trust him.Two Tacos likes this. -
Isn't this the same old article explaining why Dion only played so few snaps Monday, reassuring us that it wasn't his fault?

The really fun part is when we go to something like 4-8 and all hope is lost and they still won't play the rookies.

i don't take it as an issue of 'trust' per se ... i see it mostly an issue of strength - and we new that Jordan had to get stronger, but couldn't this year. Next year, i see him more of the JT style player on the field almost on all snaps and much stronger.
yes, i do remember that JT was terrible against the run, really for most - if not all of his career .... but if we have players that can stand up against the run better -- why would we run him out there.
we KNEW from the draft that both Jordan and Thomas were coming off injury and would need the next offseason to get stronger.
my problem with Croyle and our defense is that Carroll is still on this team ... could add Wilson as well - but he at least does contribute here and there, but they both just have not developed and need to go. Taylor or Davis can't do any worse .... catches were being made on Taylor, but he wasn't getting burned - he was there and they were just nice throws for the most part .... -
In the Cleveland game he reinjured that shoulder bad...I watched the play 10 times, I watched his reaction, the body, and the way he babied it..I don't think it was a stinger like some suggested, I think there is a real problem there..I hope the kid is gonna be alright, hope this offseason he gets it fixed again.GMJohnson likes this. -
Consider this. There are 60 starting corner backs in the NFL. Miami currently has three corners rated in the top 45 of all corners in the NFL overall and 4 in the top 40 relative to coverage. Nolan Carroll is also 29th among corners in opposing QB rating in his coverage area. I'm not trying to say our coaching staff is making all the right decisions here, but the only reason one continues to criticize Nolan Carroll for his play this year is because he is has been so poor in previous seasons that you have not let go of that despite the fact that he has made monumental improvement this year.
I don't get the feeling that Miami fans really understand just how good Dimitri Patterson has been this year either. If that guy could stay healthy, Miami's likely got two top 10 corners in the entire NFL.gilv13, ssmiami, ToddPhin and 1 other person like this. -

Patterson has been lights out on the field. Him and Grimes are cat-like quick when the ball is coming to their area. -
What's interesting to me is Coyle's Xs and Os are very good IMO. I think he game plans well, and I think he makes good adjustments. He puts the defense in a position to win. However, I really don't get some of his personnel decisions. The Jordan thing really just makes you scratch your head. Maybe he's not doing a whole lot in practice, but he looks pretty darned good in his brief game time. Jason Trusnik's playing time is the most befuddling to me though. This guy is awful. I realize the Dolphins don't have a ton of LB depth, and they have had to deal with injuries, but there's no reason he should be playing as much as he has. I think even as a rookie, Jelani Jenkins is a better player. Heck, I thought Lee Robinson looked better in preseason than Trusnik. My last gripe is not as big as the others, but when you hear about Will Davis making plays all over camp, then he makes plays in the preseason, yet despite the Dolphins being paper thin at CB, he has yet to see the field at all this season.

I hope Dion can develop into a great player. I have to admit this is one of the most disappointing drafts in recent history.
We had 5 draft picks in the first 3 rounds and 3 had limited to no impact and our 1st pick played sparingly. I can't imagine any team got less out of their draft than us. -

And we keep wondering why players leave Miami and perform better.... Dansby had a career year in AZ before and after he was a Phin. Blame who you want it comes down to Wayne bailing and sticking us with an effin bag if dycks to run my favorite franchise into the ground. No wonder Florida does not want to spend the money on a new stadium for 2 real teams to play in it every 6 years. There would be a better chance Florida would build an Olympic village for a one time wonder than a stadium for the has been dolphins. Tb and jax will be relevant again before the phins :-(
29 years of fan hood and heart and soul and belief in this franchise and I feel like someone just back handed me in the nuts yesterday. That was awful and no excuses. It's like we got a death sentence or something. Wtf!Fin-Omenal likes this. -
