He's the reason I did not want us to sign Mike Wallace. It was so obvious after last season that he was a receiver that was going to develop into a good player.

 

If we stop cutting people who go to other teams and perform well there, and instead get a clue on how to use them differently so they can perform well here, we will have solved quite a problem.

I sincerely hope that Rishard Matthews kills the Panthers, and that Ted Ginn Jr. does not end up killing us.

 

The talent is there boys. Imagine if we build our oline to be trusted to only block 5 guys and run 5 wide sets with Wallace,hartline,Gibson,Mathews and clay. That could be a scary offense if tannehill and Wallace learn to connect on the deep ball and oline is built.Of course it's alot easier to dream about it the execute it.

 

I definitely thought he was destined for slot receiver last year and I was suprised when they signed Gibson .That was a progress stopper IMO.Now that he is getting his shot I think it will be tough for Gibson to take that job back .

Of course I didnt have to look at that sleepy eyed look that confused the coaches.:wink2:

We saw flashes of it last year. He competes for the ball. He's not afraid of contested catches, and he's physical once the ball gets in his hands. I know it's hyperbole, but physically (to me anyway) he looks a lot like Boldin when he's on the field.

 

I'm not sure I love the fact that Sherman's offense lets opposing defenses dictate what the offense is going to do and who to throw to. Get the ball in our best players hands!

As for Matthews, I think we all could see how good of a pass catcher he was along with the strength he had after the catch. It's just too bad Sherman couldn't see it. I think Sherman is the one who has the sleepy eyed look and needs to wake up and pay attention.

 

I think the "sleepy-eyed look" comment is a pretty accurate microcosm of the overall problem with Sherman.

Instead of letting results matter, he lets decades of experience cause him to over think the current situation. Old offensive coordinators outsmart themselves. Sherman does it. Henning did it. Norv Turner does it. On and on. Calling offensive plays is a younger man's game.

 

I think it's a microcosm of the entire staff. Charles Clay, Rishard Matthews, Dion Jordan, Jared Odrick, Olivier Vernon - all guys they've taken a LONG time to realize how they should be properly used. And some of them are still either being used incorrectly or not to their full potential.

I'm very interested to see how this or another staff utilizes Matthews, Gibson, and Clay next year.

As usual per Ireland, his high picks tend to be "meh" he's later rd picks tend to really well.

Saw a study that looked at draft pick success percentage, 7th rd picks succeed as often as 4th rd picks

It's Rishard Matthews from Nevada (#15). I think my favorite play comes at the 2:35 mark. Kaepernick and the RB are running a form of speed option, but they have Matthews who is lined up out wide come in from the opposite direction. Matthews proceeds to juke out 6 guys (including Jarrell Root, remember him?) then out runs 2 more on his way for a TD against Boise State. That was Nevada's signature win that year.

 

If we get some solid dependable OL this offseason then this offense has scary potential.

It's not just Sherman. It tends to be more of the rule, rather than the exception. Most coaches will play the vet. over the younger guy because they 'know what they're getting'. That's been a complaint of mine for years.

 

I like Rishard. In fact, I was one of a very few that was advocating Miami not spending big money on wide receivers this off season and allow him to grow into the offense along with another couple of young receivers. Ideally, he's still not a slot. His style of play and body type makes me think of James Jones in Green Bay. I think the ideal slot guy for this offense is a Greg Jennings type of receiver.

Long term, I think Rishard's best position will be Brian Hartline's position, and honestly, I think he will be a better X receiver than Hartline long term. If this system is kept, and the team continues to build this position through the draft for this system, the Dolphins are going to be shedding that $90 million they spent on this position this off season within the next two years.

Rishard is a building block going forward, IMO. I would have loved to have added Keenan Allen to play the opposite outside receiver to Rishard long term. He'd been our Jordy Nelson type to go along with our James Jones type. Hey, that's the typical roster management we have seen from this front office though. A year ago, they didn't address the position in a receiver rich draft till the 6th round. I mean, think about it. Our receiving corps could have been set had we drafted someone like Marvin Jones early last year to go along with Rishard Matthews, and then taken Keenan Allen this year. Now, I still think we need to add two receivers for long term, because Hartline/Gibson/Wallace will be washed out of Miami by 2015.

 

This team still has a lot of building to do before they can get this offense running full tilt. We still have to get 2-3 more explosive, complete receivers. We still need an all around running back that can pass block. We still need another 5-6 offensive linemen with good feet. I think we need another big target at tight end to go along with the developing Michael Egnew and Dion Sims.

 

The group of Phins fans I hang with to watch game has been saying this very thing for a while now. We need us a young/innovative offensive coordinator who builds an offensive system around his players. Not an old vet who has a system in mind, and tries to fit square pegs into round holes.

I wonder if all of our receivers should learn to play slot. It seems to me, that....this would only make an outside receiver even better? I think sometimes...they pencil in guys to certain positions and they get glued to that spot.

The kid I wish we would resign and work with like this is Clyde Gates. He has speed, and he has those kind of basketball positioning skills that very good receivers need. I think they gave up on him way to soon.

Actually, I think our system is fine and I think our skill positions are fine for the system as well. Other than the oline, I think our offense suffers from Sherman's play calling and our entire team suffers from misuse of the talent on the team.

 

They do that in Green Bay. All their receivers play all three positions. Now, on game day, obviously the better fits at each position play those, but it is a part of their philosophy to have receivers that can play inside and outside. We haven't developed the system enough in Miami yet to do this. I think people forget that Green Bay started building their 2010 SB run in 2005.

 

I'm going to disagree with you here. I think the system is great. When you watch the Packers run this offense at full tilt, there isn't a more unstoppable offensive system out there. Only the Saints offense rivals it.

I think we have significant personnel issues, which is the reason Jeff Ireland needs to be/will be fired even if the Dolphins make the playoffs. We have mismatched our talent with this system and essentially handcuffed this staff with regards to their implementation of this system. For them to fit the play calling to the talent on this roster, they would essentially have to make wholesale changes to the scheme. Everyone likes to say "get a coach that will build the system around the players", but in reality, there probably isn't a coach that does that. At best, you get a few minor alterations to "fit" someone in, but by and large, most coaches are system specific and try to build things towards that system.

Right, but your measuring stick is the Packers running the system perfectly. I'm saying we don't need to be as good on offense as they were to win and win big.

 

How is it that after all this time, our offensive coordinator is surprised by one of our OWN players' abilities? Honestly, that says all there is to say about this coaching staff and their hardheaded stance on contributions from younger players. They will never put the best players on the field, only the ones that have put in the most time, or get paid the most money.

See thats an awsome point KB. I think people see the numbers the Eagles are putting up with Chip Kelly's offense..and expect it shouldnt take as long as it has here.

I do however, believe the single biggest thing keeping us from running a high octane offense has been our Oline more then anything else. I think we have alot of the pieces in place. Not all...but we arent far.

 

One prospect that I think would fit in well with what Miami does is Oregon State's Brandin Cooks. For those that liked Tavon Austin last year, Cooks is a similar type of player. He's not as explosive as Austin, but he actually runs routes that receivers run in the NFL. He's got outstanding hands. He's more quick than fast, but he's just a good, good player. I think if you add Cooks, you could eventually have Hartline and Matthews outside with Cooks in the slot.

Known as "Mach 7" Cooks is only a junior. He played opposite Markus Wheaton last year. Cooks can play on the perimeter and in the slot, and is a kick/punt returning option as well. On the year he's leading the NCAA in catches (100), yards (1,443 with a 14.4ypc) and is second in TDs (14) to Fresno State's Davante Adams (15).

The short-term problem is that you're going to be robbing Matthews and Gibson of snaps to play him, and vice-versa. If anything, you can remove Marcus Thigpen from the roster and use Cooks as a returner until you sort out the issues with Wallace's contract, Gibson's injury, and whether or not Hartline is a long-term piece.

Hate to break it to you but there are no genius GMs, coaches or coordinators waiting in the wings to save the day. Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers etc are that damn good, they'd make just about any system look good.
