Egnew is a bum, but Jeffy probably still won't cut him because he doesn't want to admit he made a mistake taking him in the 3rd, same reason why John Jerry wasn't cut his first couple years despite being a waste of a roster spot.

Marshall is expendable, hopefully Carroll or Taylor beats him out so we can cut him, along with Patterson and Carpenter which altogether frees up almost 10 mil

I was thinking about a point brought up on another board and it had me curious. Between Mike Wallace, Brandon Gibson, Dustin Keller, Tyson Clabo, Richie Incognito, Randy Starks, Phil Wheeler, Dannell Ellerbe, Brent Grimes, Richard Marshall and Dimitri Patterson...this team is poised to allocate a large portion of its snaps in 2013 to significant outside acquisitions. And that's without even considering the possibility of the Dolphins signing Vonta Leach, and/or the possibility that Lance Louis beats John Jerry for a job.

If you consider a full time job (all snaps) to be about 1000 snaps in a season, and you assign snap counts to the above players fairly and accordingly (1000, 500, 800, 1000, 1000, 800, 1000, 1000, 1000, 1000, 500, respectively) then you're looking at about 44% of your snaps in 2013 set to be dished out to significant outside acquisitions.

That strikes me as high. The number was about 26% for the Dolphins in 2012, which was already high. Teams like the Patriots (16%) and Seahawks (15%) were much lower. I wonder if you did a pretty extensive study on all 12 playoff teams in 2012, what you would find the average portion is of snaps handed to SIGNIFICANT outside acquisitions (and by significant I mean I'm not counting guys claimed off waivers for cheap, etc).

Still agree about the cap space we could save, but this is contingent on the young players stepping up quickly. Comical that the guy beating their drum is always the 1st to turn on them !

 

Well, in all fairness it could be viewed that our previous players taking the bulk of the snaps weren't getting the job done (hence repeated losing records), where as the guys on those playoff teams were. And the biggest difference in Seattle's turnaround was due to a guy who saw no snaps in 2011- Russell Wilson. If we have a winning season this year, then hopefully in 2013 we'll be one of those playoff teams with 16% of its snaps coming from outside acquisitions. I personally feel we needed this overhaul to get on the right track.

 

not surprising, this year we're ranked dead last as far as the number of our projected starters being our own draft picks.

 

Generally speaking, when a new coach comes in there's going to be more turnover than on teams like Seattle or New England who've had the same coaches for years. Don't need Sherlock Holmes on the case to solve that one. And I don't care if the players are from out of space as long as they play well.

i clicked on the link and just read "jamie dukes joins the finsiders" and i closed it right away, this is not something that i will waste my time on, how this guy has that kind of job is a mystery to me

Dukes is all over the place. It's confusing and not very pointed. First off he says that every great Hall of Fame quarterback had at least one receiver that could follow them into the Hall of Fame, but Tom Brady has none. He brings up Deion Branch as the best one, then talks about David Givens.

Uh...how about Randy Moss? How about the guy that averaged an AMAZING 112 catches a year in New England over the six years he was there (nearly half of Brady's starting career thus far)? But then he brings up Wes Welker but only to say that Wes was good before he got to New England, that he caught a bunch of balls in Miami so it's not like he was a nothing player. Which is confusing for him to bring up because A) No he wasn't all that awesome in Miami averaging 48 catches a year in his two years here. B) This is all antithetical to his original point that Tom Brady made all of the receivers in New England so it's weird that Dukes is suddenly doing 180 like this in the first place (a sign that he's really just talking, rather than making an argument).

He also seems to naturally know that Matt Cassel going 11-5 with Brady injured also hurts the argument in favor of Tom Brady, so he once again brings up something that is completely antithetical to his argument so that he can dismiss Cassel's success by saying "But if you look they were just barely winning games". Umm, yeah. Average margin of victory was 16 points, and only one of the 11 victories came by less than a touchdown, but yeah...they were just barely eeking out those wins. Sure.

He mentions Randy Moss to say that it's a great example of what Brady could do when he actually got a baller like Moss, then his numbers ratcheted way up. While it's true that Brady's numbers ratcheted way up in 2007 with Moss at his side, those numbers STAYED ratcheted up even as Moss was dismissed. Brady averaged 3600 yards and 25 TDs in six seasons pre-Moss, and has averaged 4600 yards and 36 TDs in three seasons post-Moss. This is pretty low-hanging fruit, as far as a counter argument goes. He's not making a very good point when it can be argued against this easily.

His criticism of Mike Wallace would be fine if it were shown in any way to be valid. But it lacks any level of detail. He says all Mike Wallace can do is run the 9 route and he's a one-trick pony. Wow. Poignant. His defense of the one-trick pony label is the fact that Wallace averaged only 68 catches his last two years (which he rounds down to 60 of course). "If you catch only 60 balls and 10 of them are touchdowns, you a one-trick pony". At this point it's actually funny how stupid he sounds.

Best part. After Dukes says the above, Jesse Agler just confusedly blurts out, "There's a difference between being a one-trick pony and number of catches though..."

Silence. Stretching silence. Pure gold.

Jesse himself had to break it up.

After being thoroughly trounced by Jesse Agler's logic, and I mean thoroughly, he tries to enact a controlled retreat by saying the point of the matter is you're not getting the production, and that to him is what a one-trick pony is. Yeah. Sure. That's totally what you just said. Totally.

On why Brent Grimes is good. "Ballhawk. If the ball is in his area code, he go up and git it."

Intelligence personified.

Sweet Jesus! He just started in on the defense by saying, "Here's my major concern on the defense, which is who's gonna rush the passer."

Double facepalm.

I actually want to POTENTIALLY give him a half-credit for saying that in his opinion he's not sure Dion Jordan is a guy that effectively rushes the passer. He said he's athletic as heck and runs like the wind but he's not sure how well he'll rush the passer. If I'm giving Jamie the benefit of the doubt, I would say OK I can accept this because quite honestly those of us who REALLY paid attention to Dion in college at Oregon would say the same thing, that rushing the passer consistently and with a strong array of moves was actually his biggest question mark since he was so inconsistent with it and since it would need to be his greatest strength given his body type and position. That's if I'm giving Jamie Dukes the benefit of the doubt.

But not even mentioning quite possibly the league's most efficient pass rusher in Cameron Wake, while going on about "who's gon' rush the passah!" and talking only about Dion Jordan...no. No, I refuse to give Jamie that benefit of the doubt. I don't know how he came to be asking the right question about Dion Jordan's abilities, but he didn't come by it honestly. He just casually adds in, "Obviously we all know about the guy that's been down there a few years, but you slide to his side and who is going to rush the passer opposite him?" (Notice didn't even say Wake's name. I'm 99% sure he forgot his name.) Well, I certainly hope NFL teams dismiss Cam Wake as capriciously as Dukes did.

I like how Jesse Agler bails him out by taking Dukes' point, and regurgitating the actually-intelligent version of that point.

I'll give him some credit for talking about the treading-water angle with respect to the linebackers (Burnett/Dansby out, Wheeler/Ellerbe in), though his articulation of the point was ludicrously bad.

I'll give him another credit for mentioning another point I agree with, that the game-changing plays angle with respect to linebackers is far overplayed, because the guys who make "game changing plays" are pass rushers and interceptors, not linebackers. Linebackers make tackles. Though, again...he articulated this pretty badly.

He just said that Dion Jordan reminds me of "That kid Curry that Seattle drafted. He might get you 7 sacks."

I'm not going to totally kill him for that because obviously he means Bruce Irvin. But the fact that he means Irvin also takes away from the comparability. CURRY was drafted high, and did not live up to expectations, expectations that he is saying will also be high with Dion Jordan because he was drafted 3 overall. I get that. But Curry was a linebacker not a pass rusher. Expectations were he'd be a good linebacker, which he wasn't. He's trying to point to Bruce Irvin who was a pass rusher much in the mold of a Dion Jordan (light, thin, athletic as hell, etc). But Irvin was drafted 15 overall. The expectations for him aren't the same. If he's a guy that continually gets 7 to 9 sacks then he's OK. What you're left with is a confused (and kind of comical, in context) comparison.

Sigh.

The Evans interview was a phone interview so I don't know how you're privy to details about his popping veins during it.

And actually Evans said a lot that was highly accurate, researched and thoughtful. And he articulated it well. Jamie Dukes said almost nothing that embodied those virtues.

You accuse me of just being a fan of anything negative for the team. That's bull sh-t. I'm a fan of intelligence and working hard. Because that's what I identify with. Safe to say I don't identify with Jamie Dukes.

Notice I was equally fan boy-ish (in both interviews, really) about Jesse Agler's work. Ohhh, nobody picked up on THAT though. Noooo. I just automatically like guys who don't like the Dolphins. Suuuuuree.

 

The only difference between the Evans and Dukes interviews was "articulation" (and that's debatable). Neither were researched or factual.

From the "18 sacks and he'd still be a reach/bust" to claiming the Steelers didn't want Wallace were just as ludicrous as anything Dukes said.

Evans was not well thought out when it came to the dolphins and their moves, maybe he is intelligent as you say, but it was obvious his patriot bias was fuc&$ing with his emotions.

Evans had 3 interviews from the draft to the phone interview you speak of, he was VERY animated and rambling in the first two (which were video). so much so that Jamie Dukes couldn't get a word in edge-wise.

 

Actually a donkey **** pile is deep enough for your foot to sink into it. Tiger **** and bear **** are pretty good comparison in that they are different but similar in size and....viscosity?.....but have very unique and horrific odors.

Bear's get much more roughage in their diets so you'll also want to factor that in when considering how far your foot will sink in.

 

Yeah that's a weak argument. The better argument is they went from a perfect season to missing the playoffs. That's a huge drop off. They went from 16-0 to 11-5. That's a 5 game drop off no matter how you slice it. That's like going 11-5 to 6-10.

 

To be fair, I have shoveled donkey, dog, bear and tiger **** in my lifetime (goat, pig, cow, lemur, monkey, panther, serval, sulcata tortoise, and bat **** too). I have seen rhino ****.....it was slow clap worthy.
