Multiple news outlets are reporting that Moore is unhappy in Miami after Cutler was brought in and handed the starting job- he felt like he did enough down the stretch of 2016 to earn that role or at least a real competition. Meanwhile, the Dolphins have made it known that they are ready to put a potential full time starter behind Tannehill since Moore struggles to remain healthy. It sounds like both sides want to part ways.
Additionally, Miami is bringing in several projected 1st round quarterbacks for interviews this week...so it sounds like they're serious about getting a legit young QB1 in the backup role for a few seasons of grooming.

Should have stuck with Moore. Could have been 6-10 with $10 million more in cap space.

As much as I like Moore, his departure from Miami would be par for the natural course of back-up quarterbacks. You always want an experienced back-up to help groom your drafted starter (Marino/Strock) then you need to look at bringing in younger for the starter to groom (Mitchell, Huard, etc).
Now I wouldn't be drafting a 1st round caliber quarterback as we have other immediate needs, but it wouldn't hurt taking a look at a 3rd rounder -
That stated, Moore got his opportunities and didn't play well. And if you can't perform yourself after getting an opportunity then you really have nothing to complain about. It's best for the team to part ways with him based solely on performance.dolphin25, Irishman and ripper1961 like this. -
Let's not kid ourselves, Cutler has the higher ceiling than Moore. If Moore's ceiling is 10 stories, Cutler's ceiling is the Willis Tower.
The bad part is, Cutler only played to about the 15th floor of the Willis Tower.
I love Moore. I love his attitude, guts, and determination. I'd love to have a team full of Moores.Irishman, ripper1961, KeyFin and 1 other person like this. -
shouldn't have cutler ceiling already been met after 11 years? he should have hit his ceiling and maintained the constant play. his ceiling fell a long long time ago and added with his cancer of a personality I don't think his ceiling is "high" he has literally ran every team hes been on into turmoil. except maybe Miami because he didn't care 1 more year in the sun for 10 mil.dolphin25 likes this. -
The Cutler signing was a slap in the face for Moore. It was also an extension of Gase's lack of respect towards the guy to be so desperate as to sign a bum like Cutler off the sportscasting scrap heap when dude didn't even really want to play - his wife talked him into it. The whole thing was downright shameful. I'll never forget marching Moore out there vs. the Ravens on a short week with basically a brand new playbook. ***eye roll***
It's time for Miami to draft new talent at QB, but I appreciate Moore's service to this team. Dude was a gamer and a proverbial "team" guy. The bizarre contingent who loathed this man had farts between their ears.dolphin25, djphinfan, shamegame13 and 2 others like this. -
In his second game against the Bucs, Moore posted a 106.5 rating in a loss. We continually ran the ball though and it wasn't enough- that's not on Moore.
In his third and final game against the Pats in NE (another place our starters haven't won in quite some time), he completed 67.6% of his passes and a TD but had two picks. He also played hurt in that game since he was sacked hard multiple times.
It's easy to say Moore sucked because he went 0-3, but two of those games are almost always bad losses and he played fantastic in the 3rd game. I know we've become accustomed to Moore working miracles off the bench...but we didn't really set him up for success here either.Irishman likes this. -
Wish him well, but it's about time we focused on getting some young talent in here to develop. I really wanted to do that last year, just in case there was a setback in Tannehill's recovery. Though, I certainly didn't expect him to miss an entire year to follow it up.

2017 for me was the last time I want Moore as our backup. He was good in individual stretches but he had a 75.6 rating for the year after 127 attempts, which is about one game shy of what it takes for passer rating to become reliable (~150 attempts), and you're not increasing that 75.6 THAT much even with another 100+ rating game. It is true that overall his stats under Gase are pretty good for a backup (he has a combined 87.79 rating for 2016 and 2017 which is basically average for a starting QB), but he just didn't play well in too many occasions in 2017 to keep him.
Seriously.. it's best to roll with Tannehill and a young drafted QB as backup, unless that drafted QB just outplays Tannehill.Pauly, KeyFin, texanphinatic and 1 other person like this. -

This wasn't your average backup QB. Players liked him a lot and there were quite a few who felt he deserved his chance to start throughout the years. -

I've followed Moore since his Carolina days so I have some extra insight here- his wife wanted him to retire years ago, but went along with the Miami move since he would be a backup. She has said verbally many times that he's not going to another team though because she's not moving the family again (plus she loves Miami), so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I really think he will just retire due to family influence. The Finest, Fame and Irishman like this. -

Thanks for the good years Matt. I don't think you have enough left in the tank for another season, but you can retire, enjoy life in South Florida, and still have a measure of good health. -
Moore did a great job backing up Tannehill while he was under a rookie contract. Now, the circumstances have changed as Tannehill paid for performance while his contract provides the Dolphins with flexibility if they decide to move on.
I think Geno Smith may be a good option. His salary was much lower (1.2 million) and he throws a good ball with a game more similar to Tannehill's. Lots of players, including Geno, work out in south Florida during the off-season. Miami needs to take advantage of this to identify players that can fit Gase's passing game. With a couple of ex UM WRs trying to earn a roster spot, Miami should be able to make these sessions critical to retaining or earning a roster spot. Since coaches have limited contact, Tannehill will have to 'coach' the passing game and can provide feedback on what existing players or acorns get their role in the offense.
During the regular season, Geno may provide more competition for Tannehill than a rookie or veteran with limited athletic skills. I'm a Tannehill optimist, but if Gase needs to use him a scapegoat when he or the offense are performing poorly, I think Geno may be well-suited to jump-start the offense while sticking to the script designed for Tannehill And if Gase pulls Tannehill, it makes it much easier to pull another offensive player when their performance is off. -
