I think Gibson is the best and most complete wide receiver we have on the roster. I think he is extremely underrated, but that's gonna change this season as long as he stays healthy. Mike Wallace is and should be our number 1 only because of his speed. I think we'll get to see a lot of everyone 1-5 when they take their breathers and when we run our new 3/4 wide receiver sets.


Also I saw today in an interview with Landry that they have been lining him up in the tight end position as well as returner.

it is a well rounded set. I'm still concerned whether any of them can step up in the redzone when we need it.

 

Still think Hartline is the odd man out next offseason, Matthews was a big time receiver for Nevada, guy caught something like 14 TD's and 2300+ yards in two seasons with Kaepernick at Nevada, forgot the stats but it was around that ballpark. I always felt give Matthews a few years to get comfortable with the pro league and he will blossom into a very good receiver.

Wallace brings something different than the other receivers that separates himself because of his speed, the other receivers all have potential to be better than Hartline.

 

I think Matthews very much is someone who should be looked at as a potential starter down the road. He's had some growing pains, but he's also shown that kind of upside. If he's grown up and gotten past whatever maturity issues he's had, the future looks pretty bright for him.

It's early, but Wallace looks like he's picked up where he left off last season. There's no way in hell they keep him unless there is a marked improvement.

We already have two guys out the first 4 weeks because of the juice. Thats plenty.

 

I've been a big Matthews fan since UNR. IMO he can be a faster Anquan Boldin. I see him as a future starter. In fact, I love all of our top 5 WRs. I even like Damian Williams as a developmental guy. I'm not convinced he'll actually develop into a potential starter, but I am convinced there's enough there to warrant trying to develop him. I also like that he brings the speed that we're lacking in our WR corp outside of Wallace. I never saw the attraction in Binns. I know he's big, but I just never saw him as all that good. I do believe that Gibson, Matthews and Landry can all be effective redzone targets. They have good body/hand strength and are good at body positioning/control.

I'm not saying they are better, but I think they'd need to be considered.

 

i´m talking about WR as a unit per team from 1-5. the bears ? the just signed santonio holmes, they have nothing after marshall and jeffrey, which of course is a pretty good 1-2 punch

 

I know we're talking 1-5. To me, if your 1 & 2 are so far a head it makes up for shortcomings in depth (and that doesn't even take into account the disparity in snap count from 1-5). I'm saying for example:
Wallace - 7
Hartline - 6
Gibson - 5
Matthews - 5
Landry -4
Total = 27

Marshall - 10
Jeffrey - 8
Holmes - 3
Wilson - 3
Morgan - 3
Total = 27


See, they are still as good as us 1-5 in the above example. Perhaps you mean who would have as little drop of from 1-5 (meaning if there were an injury, what team would lose the least) or by some other measure, and I am just answering the question differently from how you meant it.

 

You're sleeping on Marquis Wilson. Once he gets back from injury, he's going to be a strong #3 WR.

 

Hakeem Nicks, Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief (potentially) for the Colts. Another nice, and probably better receiving corps.

 

Our number 1 is Brian Hartline if you go be the stat that matters - production. Over the past two years anyway. You'd like it to be Wallace since he makes the money and has the speed, but Calvin Harper had the speed and Michael Irvin got all the catches in Dallas and there was no doubt who the number 1 was.

Based on last year before his injury and so far this preseason you could make a real case for Brandon Gibson being number 1.

Really doesn't matter to me, all I care about is guys who can run good routes, catch and score TD's. If the 6th guy on our bench ends up being the "number 1" by the end of the season, so be it!

 

If the question is who potentially has the best 3-5 WR in the league, I think that the Fins are on the very short list.

Based on last year pre-injury I don't see how one could make a compelling case that Gibson would be "#1" over Hartline or Wallace when taking everything into consideration. And pointing to this preseason for further evidence probably isn't the best example since the snap count is considerably different between the three since only Gibson played game 1.

That's in no way trying to paint Gibson in a negative light, just saying it is hardly a level field when you consider this preseason.

 

Really? The stats you posted at least make the argument that all three are about equal. Gibson has the fewest yards but also the most TDs.

 

Best group of receivers in the NFL IMO.

 

I love Gibby, Matthews, and Landry. I do find it interesting that they all have had success in the slot for our offense though. Im not saying they couldn't play outside, I think they could (especially Matthews)…but I think Lazor is doing his part to make the slot a large part of the game plan. Tannehill loves his slot guys…this goes all the way back to Swope at A&M.

 

Williams is also showing some outside talent.

Agreed. In fact, it makes me feel angry towards Mike Wallace. How does Brandon Gibson have the same amount of catches, 72 yards less, and 2 more TD's as a slot receiver w/less opportunities? When you look at this receiving core, Mike Wallace is really the only one who is purely a niche receiver. He's got one thing going for him and that's it. The only one who's going to boom or bust week to week.

 

If Brandon Gibson doesn't go down with injury we would have had 4 pass catchers with at least 50 catches and 750 yards. I haven't done any checking but I would have to think that's pretty rare for teams around the league.

 

Its very impressive, regardless. Also, when most teams do something like that, at least one of the pass catchers is a RB, and the Fins of course mostly ignore the position in the passing game.

How much of a production drop-off do you guys think we'd have at WR if we were to lose Mike Wallace for any reason? How important is our $60 million dollar man?

 

There should be an increase in passing production.

We all saw RT wo Hartline and Wallace, and with them against Tampa. He produces mixed results with those two, because one does not get yacs and runs backwards, and the other has poor hands and is really not great at anything.
