Chris Mortensen @mortreport Also, #Dolphins owner Stephen Ross plans to hire former Chiefs prez Carl Peterson to front office role once held by Bill Parcells
Many have been speculating this for a while. Not sure how I feel...on one hand he did help KC a lot in the beginning, 3 of his assistant coaches went on to super bowls as head coaches with other teams. Right fit here though? Have anything left? KC never won a SB, Jeff Fisher never won in Tenn, but both franchises came close, closer than we have in 20 years...maybe they're hungry (if we get them). I don't know.

I'm indifferent on Perterson. Lots of success too in KC. As long as he doesn't bring in Herm Edwards, we could do worse. BUT - can we do better, that's the question.

How can he do worse than we've been doing? I'm willing to give him a shot.

Really? Name them...
Peterson Failures @ KC:
1. Failed to secure a young franchise QB during his entire tenure
2. Gave away picks to the Jets for the services of Herm Edwards
3. Failed to advance to the AFC Championship Game or Superbowl
What were his teams known for? A strong running game? Tony Gonzalez? And then what?
Peterson left KC in such terrible shape that even Scott Pioli couldn't fix the mess.
We are doomed.

I'd takes 20 years of leadership and outcomes that KC had under Peterson (and the coaches that flourished and went on to bigger and better things) to the last 15 years that we have to deal with as a franchise since Jimmy Johnson took over. WE have been a joke of a franchise and a team with the exception of the surprise 2008 run.. Peterson may not be ideal but he did win and will play hardball. About time someone took this team by the horns.
From Wikipedia (Note, I'm indifferent on this myself right now):
Peterson led the Chiefs for 20 seasons, one of the longest and most successful tenures for a team president, general manager and CEO in modern NFL history.
Upon his arrival to Kansas City, he made one of the most important hires in the team's history when naming Marty Schottenheimer head coach. Schottenheimer led the team to its most successful period since Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Hank Stram paced Kansas City's sidelines. Prior to Peterson's arrival, the Chiefs had made only one playoff appearance in the previous 18 years. The Chiefs were the NFL's winningest team in the 1990s, won four AFC West championships, and played in the team's only AFC Championship Game in January 1994. Over Peterson's 20 years, the Chiefs' record was 176-141-1 and qualified for the NFL playoffs nine times.
Under Peterson's leadership, three Kansas City assistant coaches ultimately went on to lead teams to Super Bowl championships as head coaches: Bill Cowher (Pittsburgh Steelers; Super Bowl XL), Tony Dungy (Indianapolis Colts; Super Bowl XLI) and Mike McCarthy (Green Bay Packers; Super Bowl XLV). Peterson also hired Vermeil as Kansas City's head coach in 2001, two years after he had led the St. Louis Rams to victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.
Four current NFL team general managers also built their portfolios as members of the Chiefs' front office under Peterson: Tom Dimitroff (Atlanta Falcons), Mark Dominik (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Jeff Ireland (Miami Dolphins) and John Schneider (Seattle Seahawks). In addition, National Football Scouting President Jeff Foster, a Chiefs scout under Peterson, now directs the annual NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis for all 32 NFL clubs.

Its a new situation, he led the most successful franchise, winning percentage wise, for an entire decade, and sold more tickets than anyone else in the process..He's hired great people in the early stages of their career, and this is a new place..
Lets give him the proper time frame to show us either way..
Lets not let some preconceived notions of him just shut him down with no open mind..

This is just about the worst possible news.
I absolutely abhor Carl Peterson. I've tried to warn against him for some time on this message board. Sure, from the outside looking in, I guess you could say those KC teams were successful. But that team never went anywhere in the playoffs and were a revolving door at quarterback (sound familiar). To me, this move guarantees that we will continue to bounce between the 7-9 and 9-7 mediocrity that has plauged this franchise since the late 1980s. I don't see Carl doing anything to change that any time soon.
As for Ireland, meh. I'm not really a fan, but it looks like he did pretty well with this offseason with both the draft and free agency being unshackled from Bill Parcells. In Ross's mind he's prboably earned a shot at continuing to move on in some capacity. Honestly, having Ireland focus on college scouting and unknown players while allowing Peterson to help out with free agency may be the best of both worlds. Take that with a hefty pinch of salt, because I'm not convinced that Ireland will be here long term.
The Peterson hire will also more than likely derail Ross's idea of a "name" at head coach. I'd guess that both Cowher and Gruden are now firmly out, though the second tier guys will most likely be available. I'm hoping for a Rob Ryan or Andy Reid, though it's possible we end up with someone like Jeff Fischer.
In TWENTY YEARS, his teams made the AFC Championship game ONCE and lost. That is success to you? Thats the same mediocrity (only a little better) that we have been mired in for years. A lot of his early success could be attributed to Schottenheimer...
You know what I fear now? Carl Peterson making Schottenheimer's SON head coach of the Dolphins now out of loyalty and familiarity, even though Brian is not as competent or qualified as his father.
And during that entire 20 year tenure, he failed to secure a young QB that was developed into a franchise signal caller.
This sucks. This really sucks.
If you continue to be that sure of things that you can't possibly be that sure of, then you are only helping in the process of why this team has trouble selling tickets and could be sold and moved in 3 to 5 years.
The man has a proven track record in a much less desirable place to play ball.
Every GM has made some mistakes in evaluation, lets not sensationalize the ones he did...cause there were a lot that did succeed..
Cowher does have familiarity with Peterson, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
This wiki entry looks like it was 1000% crafted by an aide or agent of Peterson. Read through it again and tell me it doesn't sound like the cover letter of a resume. Look, I live in Kansas, and I speak with Chiefs fans on a regular basis, in addition to following the local sports writers (minus Whitlock - ugh) and sports radio. Trust me when tell you that Peterson was REVILED by the time he finally stepped down. I find it weird that there's absolutely nothing negative on that wiki entry ... looks scraped clean to me.

A little perspective:
http://georgeblowfish.com/Chiefspage8.html
"Good: Drafted Derrick Thomas as his first draft pick in 1989. Also drafted Tim Grunhard, Dave Szott, Dale Carter, Will Shields, Larry Johnson, John Tait, Jared Allen, Donnie Edwards, Dante Hall, Derrick Johnson, Tony Gonzalez and Brandon Flowers.
Bad: Drafted Percy Snow, Trezelle Jenkins, Harvey Williams, Greg Hill, Victor Riley, Sylvester Morris, and Ryan Sims, all as first rounders."
Didn't say that defines success for me - just trying to give the guy a fair shot. To me, I see a lot of good, and a lot of bad. Nothing to excite me, yet nothing that makes me think he'd be a total disaster either. It does seem he's pretty good at identifying good coaches, though (short of Herm).

It's not hard if you look beyond the last season or two of his tenure. Seriously...look him up.

These guys are often reviled when they leave their respective teams.. What does the average Dolphins fan think of Nick Saban as opposed to Alabama fans? Saban is reviled in Miami yet is a god in Alabama. If you were to take a poll today, you could make the same exact arguments about Parcells and even take it further and say he did nothing to improve the QB position even though we invested in Henne and thought we finally found our guy...

I'm guessing after 20 years of a good amount of regular season success, but yet - not even one SB appearance, KC fans were ready to move on in a major way. I'm sure we would be too.
There's good and bad w/ this guy, if he is indeed the guy.
Petersen is denying everything to the Miami Herald, so we'll see. find out in a few minutes I suppose
That would be the straw that breaks my back. Been a Fin Fan for 30-plus years, and that would make me move on. THAT would be the one move this team could make that would send me over the edge. I'd rather they sign Tony to a 20-year extension.

The Old King is dead! Long live the King Carl!
Again, Peterson is disputing the report to Barry Jackson.
A lot of teams don't find the QB, got to give him credit that team played good without one. Truly, in the modern day of football, you are either a genius or an idiot, all by who you found for QB. Peterson falls into the next Rogers, then he is genius...

Sounds as if though he wants to be more of the "Black Hand" than "Uncle Carl". I wouldn't mind him in a temporary capacity, as CK said in another thread, to hire someone like a Russ Ball or Omar Khan to take over the front office.
If you go back and look at my comments on Peterson, they've been pretty consistent.
I'm a believe that past performance indicates future success.
Which, in the case of Peterson, means more mediocrity.
I can't get behind the move. There's better and more qualified guys out there. Peterson will just make sure we draft an o-lineman in Round 1 and stay in that 7-9 to 9-7 range.
Nothing cutting edge, nothing new. Same as it ever was.
He sortve danced around the question... I fully expect Peterson to be the Czar after the season...
