The problem with signing both is that you would probably have to sign them for the same amount. I can't see Jennings signing for 7 million if Wallace has signed for 10 million. Money is a ego thing for athletes so I'm sure both players would want to be "respected" with the same amount.

 

I'm picturing Ireland even contemplating offering that much cash in contracts to Wr's..reaches for:

I really hope we do it. I believe Jennings can be had for 1 to 2 mil. More the Heartline and make the splash with Wallace. Then Draft a receiver and TE and we will be set. Spend the rest of the first three round picks on D. I believe that will put this team in a real fine position to compete for the foreseeable future and then we can continue to build upon this.

I think signing both would be a complete waste of resources, particularly when one has had injury problems and the other doesn't fit what the coaches want in a receiver. It would be a move to add flash to placate the fans and a fan owner.

 

Would be the worst offseason in franchise history. Grounds for someone to be fired.

So let me understand. Signing two good players is bad, and grounds for firing, but five years of drafting and signing more bad than good players is grounds for celebration and a lifetime job without criticism?

I wouldn't call investing in the weakest area of your team to modify it for immediate improvement a 'complete waste of resources'. As opposed to all the other methods we've been practicing that work oh-so well.

With only one of them fitting the scheme, which makes the other one's one ability near completely useless in this offense. The most expensive decoy ever, and he can't run the full route tree the way the receivers in this offense should. Horrible, horrible fit for a timing based offense that requires precise route running.

Jennings is a great fit. He's the guy to go after in free agency.

 

So what this means is Miami's receiving corps is actually going to consist of Bess, Binns, Hartline, Matthews, and a late round pick or David Tyms.

This time of year is fun for everyone.

You've got to be able to pay for them, you've got to be able to utilize them, and you've got to account for the very high percentage of free agents who bust. That should realistically be concerning.

 

Actually you dont know that Wallace cant fit the scheme because hes never been asked to run the routes he will be asked to run here. What we do know is he has a reasonably high RAC which is something this offense emphasizes and that hes a big play threat which is something we desperately need and something there is only but a handful of players like that around. He caught a ton of receiver screens and plays that ask a player to make someone miss in space the last few years. So in conclusion we dont know if he can play in this offense. Id sure as hell rather spend the money on a young, talented game breaker like Wallace though then a 30 year old injury prone wr who hasnt been healthy or productive the last year and a half (Jennings) even if Jennings has experience in the system. I think jennings has a better chance of being a bust (for lack of productivity) then Wallace.

 

I doubt it will happen. From a pure football point idk if I'd want it to happen.

But I like that we're thinking this way...

 

I'll take Jennings + one or two draft picks in one of the deepest WR drafts of all time and spend the extra 10 million elsewhere thank you very much.

 

Actually, he doesn't have a high RAC. He averaged 3.9 RAC yards last year, and has been in consistent decline since halfway through the 2011 season. For comparison, Greg Jennings -- the better fit -- averaged 4.6 RAC yards last year.

No, overpaying for players is bad under any circumstances. Signing good players for more than they are worth is a strategy of failure in a game of maximizing finite resources. Its like saying a BMW M3 is a good car, so I'll pay $500,000 for it.

If you sign Mike Wallace for $11M a season, he has to produce among the top-3 WRs in the league, or he is a negative value-added.

 

Actually PFF has Wallace's RAC at 4.4 and Jennings at 4.8 this year. In 2011 when Arians was in Pitt Wallace's RAC was at 6.8 where as Jennings was at 4.6. In 2010 Jennings was at 5.5 RAC and Jennings was at 6.3. As Ive stated before Bruce Arians offense is much similar to what Wallace will be asked to do here and the decline in RAC is directly tied to the change in philosophy from the two different coordinators.

 

I am 100% for this, if of course it happens which is doubtful. Wallace is still a young guy, and this lets us address other areas such as CB and OL in the first 2 rounds of the draft. Get the WR position stacked during FA and worry about other positions in the draft. Also gives us wiggle room to draft more of a BPA type of strategy in the draft.

 

Oh, and Wallace has been asked to run these routes before, but he's so bad at it, that they don't ask him to do it much despite the fact that they have spent the last three years trying to get him better at it. He rounds off his routes, doesn't run them at the proper depth, and sometimes just jogs into his route when he knows the ball isn't coming to him.

Again, this is not an offense that has one receiver that just runs vertical routes.
