My view is they are 2-3 years and a head coaching change away from being a playoff team.
Philbin is a mediocre head coach and there just isn't enough talent on the roster for a mediocre head coach to lead this team to the playoffs.
I do believe that a great head coach like Belichick could take this team to at least the first round of the playoffs. He has the ability get the best out of even average players. Philbin isn't able to do that and I just don't see this team being any better than 7-9 next year with Philbin as the HC.
It is a shame Ross forced Philbin on the fans for one more season. He should have made the change after the 2014 season and the new HC could have implemented his system next year and the Dolphins might have been able to make a legitimate playoff run in 2016.
Now the new HC will have to install his system in the 2016 season and we will probably have to wait until 2017 before the Dolphins make a serious run at the playoffs. -
We never seem to be in sync. The defense is up and the offense is down and then the offense is up and the defense is down. It's inconsistency. If both units can play to their potential, then yes, we can be a playoff team.

There is nothing about this team that should make anyone think it's playoffs-bound with any certainty. Contrast this team with Seattle, Green Bay, New England, Dallas, and Indy, for example, and consider how much certainty fans of those teams should have that they'll make the playoffs. With the Dolphins it could easily go either way. With those other teams it'd take something totally unexpected to derail them.

That would be Jones, Finnegan, Taylor, Davis, Thomas, Delmas, and Wilson in the secondary. Ellerbe, Wheeler, Misi, Jordan, McCain, Jenkins, and Freeney at LB. Albert and Pouncey, our best OL, Smith too. Moreno played 1 full game, Thomas was banged up, Clay battled injury all year.
Yeah I'd say that qualifies as somewhat unexpected.Fin D likes this. -
At the end of the season we were an 8-8 team, with no playoffs. Being that nothing has changed - no draft, no free agents, no coaching changes - I'd say we are still not a playoff team until something changes.
-
We will be in it until the final two games of the season.
And Mr. Clutch will puke all over himself with the season on the line.
Also, unless we pull off some major moves in the right direction between now and day 1 of the season(unlikely), not enough corrections have been made to be a playoff team. -

So based on the lack of talent how id Philbin supposed to get them to the playoffs? You can't have it both ways. No enough talent or enough talent to get them there. Which is it?
The injuries to starting players has been a concern of many years. Is there something about the conditioning or is it just what happens happens?Fin D and PhinFan1968 like this. -
Best I've gotten, is something along the lines of, "a coach and gm can both suck and the team still be average". No explanation how mind you, just that its possible and I'm probably slow for not realizing it. -

We're pretty close to playoff caliber...just a few key players away IMHO. -

Indy played a schedule that included...
Jacksonville, Houston, and Tennessee each twice.
You can make it to the playoffs and still suck..... -
I predict we will kick at least one field goal this year.
