I think ireland and parcells dropped the ball when they drafted jake long over matt ryan.Long to me looks very average at best in pass protection when facing top notch defensive ends.Last year he was good but I do not think he faced any really good pass rushers.
Matt ryan on the other hand is looking like the real deal, and henne has not impressed me at all in preseason.I think atlanta is on the way up and we are on the way down. The teams that make the playoffs every year have one thing in common.,great qb play.Until we find a Qb we are only going to be an average team at best.

Jake Long looks average? He was outstanding last year, went to the pro bowl, sure he had a rough one against Atlanta, but he was great against Indy against one of the best pass rushers in the league in Dwight Freeney. Long was the safe pick, this regime builds from the inside out, without Long anchoring down the left side, matt ryan would have been killed on this team last year. Who would have played LT? Move Carey back over there? Sure... but there's a reason he was moved from there, and if you do move CArey to LT, who plays RT? Hmm...
Easy to sit back now and say Ryan is great, we should have drafted him... but at the time, that's not so easy to do when you're looking to turn around a team that was god awful the year before. You can get a stop-gap QB like we did with Pennington easily, but its rare you get the chance to get a franchise LT. Sure a franchise QB is nice, but think about it, last year we were actually apparently content going into the season with McCown, Beck and... that other guy (I really don't remember) untill Pennington fell into our laps. It appears to me that it was always the intention of this FO to rebuild slowly, starting with the lines.
Nobody really knows what we have in Henne yet. Give him some time to play in regular season games, and then we can decide if we have a QB in him or not.Ophinerated and Colorado Dolfan like this. -
He faced Terrell Suggs, Mario Williams, Calvin Pace, Shaun Phillips, and Richard Seymour last year and allowed a grand total of 2.5 sacks all of last year. He's fine. This year he's started with tough matchups of Freeney and Abraham and he bounced back well in his second game. Pace, Suggs and Williams I believe spoke highly of him last year to boot.

Matt Ryan's left tackle is 1st rounder Sam Baker.
You should have stopped writing when you said that Jake Long was "very average at best in pass protection". All your credibility went at that point.muscle979, unluckyluciano, brandon27 and 4 others like this. -

How many games is enough to evaluate a QB?

Maybe I am the only person on the planet that feels this was but I think Matt Ryan sucks. He has one of the best WR's in the NFL in Roddy White and has one of the best running attacks in the NFL also. Not to mention he has Tony Gonzales.
IDK, I don't see that kid ever winning a Super Bowl. His arm strength is not super like Marino/Elway/Favre, and his accuracy is no where near that of a Joe Montana/Tom Brady/Peyton Manning. What is it people see in Matt Ryan to make people think he is going to be an NFL Legend some day? -

ryan is def. a real good quarterback imojetssuck likes this. -

Roddy White was a rookie before Ryan got here, most great WRs break out in year 3. Guess what year it was when Matt Ryan got there. IMO, Roddy White carried Ryan his rookie season, and imo Roddy White is the best current WR in the NFL.
Tony Gonzales doesn't make QBs look good? ROFLMAO...he made Tyler freakin' Thigpen look like a world beater last season!
Again, what is it that people think is so special about Matt Ryan? -
I will be honest I was a huge supporter in Miami drafting Matt Ryan buy many argued he would never be a decent Nfl QB and so far has proven them all wrong. Now the Jake Long issue, I must say yes we passed on Ryan but we didn't do so bad for ourselves with Jake Long. I really like the way he rebounded against the colts that shows me maturity and skill.
I do not see Long as a bust but as a great asset to the dolphins, besides Miami has a first round pick on the team that lacks maturity, concentration and has been a bust, but I'm not gonna mention his name so this conversation don't turn into a post about him. -
IDK, like I said I'm sure I am in the VERY tiny minority with my opinion. I just don't see the arm strngth or accuracy the great ones had. Maybe I psychologically want to see him fail? I doubt that...but I just don't see it. -
Jason Allen? :wink2: -

Calvin Pace is not an elite pass rusher but he's a quality one who had seven sacks last year.
And he did not have help the entire game. Some parts of it he did but entire game? No.
-
So you think he has the "It" factor basically? I can understand that. I'll admit I haven't seen alot of games of his yet, maybe 5 or 6. I was being a little dramatic when I said he sucked, but I don't see him being as good as say Ben Roethlisberger. I think Big Ben is about 2x the QB Matt Ryan is. Big Ben is one tough dude, IMO.
Compared to Jake Long, Matt Ryan sucks. That's what I should have said. -
Also, Kurt Warner > Matt Ryan. -
Anquan Boldin
Randy Moss
Santonio Holmes
Calvin Johnson
Just to name a few. -
