thatms pretty amazing. Imagine how much we will improve once we draft a pass rushing DE and ball hawking S.

Actually, we recovered 1 of those 8 (just none from ones caused against the rush). Either way, it's still not bouncing our way. Didn't we have a couple that were taken away from us that shouldn't have? -
Honestly do not know each fumble off hand, do know it is surprising the number of times we get the ball out and it does not go our way.

I'm fond of the 3rd down conversion rate at a tiny 26%, which is now tied with Houston after their game tonight.
For comparison, Balt is 37%, Seattle 39%, NE 44%, Buffalo 48%, Jets 49%, and Oakland pulling up the rear with 53%.HULKFish, Hiruma78 and Pandarilla like this. -
I remember it being really crappy.
Plus the year before was 15 dropped interceptions or something crappy like that.HULKFish likes this. -
More or less:
-3rd downs
-turnovers
-pts allowed
-sacks
Are my standard metrics, with tackle numbers in the secondary, especially with the cornerbacks.
Hesitate to mention this, but our ST unit is regressing, first 2 games it was a strength, last 3 it seems like their is a blunder every game:
-Jets..first down on a snap to Tebow out of the punt formation
-Missed FG
-AZ missed FG
-Cinci..the turnover off of Jones' leg
-missed FG
ST needs to look in the mirror or it will cost us more than 2 games this season. -
i think we were 1-12 in FR last year and this was a stat i thought thats impossible to do again....damn the ball just doesn´t bounce our way

Agree on the whole, as much as I like Anthony Armstrong, fact is our #3 and #4 Wr's have given us nothing. -
Our defense has been playing well as of late, no doubt. I'm interested to see how we play against NE, who seems to have found a rushing attack against their aerial assault. That will be a true test.

One of the Football Outsiders' tennants (right or wrong) is that fumble recovery is 100% luck. There is no skill involved because once a ball is fumbled, where it bounces is completely random. The fact that we've forced 8 and only recovered 1 is a statistical anomaly. It should even out over time.
I'm beginning to really love this defense. Especially the front 7.ToddPhin likes this. -
Even when it does bounce our way the refs don't care.
Who knew that pinning the ball to your shoulder pad with your wrist after already fumbling was "possession"ToddPhin, HULKFish, dolfan32323 and 1 other person like this. -

I'm loving the execution on 3rd down, and disguising coverages with blitz looks... If we can clean up the problem with screens, NE is goin' down! But firstly, the universe will align with a W in Jests land.

We won't have the same talent at Qb but a tougher schedule, which is what happened in 09 especially after Pennington went down.Alex44 likes this. -

Front 7 is playing very well but I still wish we had a good compliment to Wake on the other side, like Ogunleye was to Taylor in their prime. Can you imagine if we had two outstanding outside rushers with the maulers we have on the inside?

The 3rd down statistic is particularly fantastic in my opinion. How many years have we been screaming "get off the damn field" about our defense? There is a reason "9 and out" was hoped for and a relief when it happened.
We aren't getting bounces on fumbles, we have had ****ty luck in that regard for years. One day it will turn our way.
I think our pass defense statistics are staggering. I look at our secondary and shudder. Kevin Coyle, who I continually question regarding his love of zones and his odd substitution patterns, is doing a damn good job in my opinion.
All that said, we have been healthy (knock on wood). We are paper thin everywhere. That will wear this crew down eventually. If they can stay healthy, stop the run and keep getting off the field on 3rd down that will mitigate the lack of depth and keep the injuries to a minimum.
We need another draft to shore up the depth and add to the secondary. -
