I see some things that I didn't see with Henne, but then I see some things that I did see with Henne. So I am confused. I am not nearly as knowledgeable on the QB traits as some of the posters here (see ckparrothead!) but I am wondering, is he FINALLY our franchise QB? Does he have what it takes? And if not, why? And what do we do then?

Since Rome Was built in a day, No. He is terrible. He has so much talent beside him and is doing nothing with it. I say we trade him for a 2nd round pick and hope there is a future QB out there next year. Time to start Moore!
I hope people got the sarcasm in there -
-
It's only been 3 games. Certainly not very encouraging however.
-
IMO, he will be the QB of the future. His upside is tremendous and he has incredible poise. Did he make some bonehead plays so far? Of course. But look at yesterday's game: led them down the field to tie in the 2-minute drill and basically did the same for the win in the OT. With seasoning and some new pieces to the puzzle, he is going to be just fine.
-
It's all a matter of how much and how long he keeps improving. Henne did some great things in 2009 but never improved, and even regressed some in 2010.
It's imperative he gets that TD/INT ratio on the right side of 1. It's no coincidence Miami lost the 2 games where his ratio was < 1 and won the game where it was positive. That ratio is huge. So is the QB rating differential which another thread mentioned earlier this morning. Improving in these areas will be key. -
Tannehill has looked about as good as I would have expected. He has shown very good poise and command of the offense. He has flashed his athleticism, both running with the ball and creating opportunities on the run. He has a quick release and a good arm. He's made some mistakes but all QBs do. While people are quick to label any mistake by a rookie a rookie mistake, the truth is that we have all seen those same kind of mistakes made by Brady, Manning, Marino, etc. I see nothing in these first 3 games to suggest that he can't develop into a very good, and maybe elite, QB.
It's water under the bridge now, but these first 3 games have shown why I didn't want Tannehill to win the starting job this year. The rest of the team has played well enough for us to have won all 3 games. We should be 2-1 and if a more veteran QB would have avoided those INTs and executed in the red zone against Houston, we could be 3-1. Unfortunately, Moore played poorly in camp and the preseason and didn't take advantage of the opportunity. Now, what is done is done and you ride it out with Tannehill and hope he continues to develop. -
He is passing the eye test so far, and his body language looks good.
But I will need to see "some" moments of brilliance this year. Maybe 1 great game, and another game that you can attribute the win to his play.jsizzle and P h i N s A N i T y like this. -

Given the lack of weapons around him....I really cant see any reason why he isnt our franchise QB. He shows alot of poise against some really good defenses....seems to make the right decisions.....and really seems the perfect QB to run the offense we are implementing.....
-
Honestly, he has played better than I thought he would... I didn't think he would start until the later half of the season.
You have to feel bad for him though, he has to have the worse WR core in the NFL. His WRs can't separate all that well (forcing him to make more accurate throws), catch the ball (Anthony Armstrong), and just aren't that good in general. I wish we could see what he would do given decent WRs. -
Football is like that. In the short term, that is all we have to go on, till the sample size gets larger.RevRick, schmolioot, jsizzle and 1 other person like this. -
What would be nice is if he had some weapons around him so that we coul-- you know what, never mind.

I know it's been said but I just want to reiterate...3 games not even close to enough.
Remember how awful Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert were a year ago?
One is 40 of 79 for 468 yards, 4 TDs and 0 INTs. The other is 68 of 97 for 713 yards, 4 TDs and 0 INTs with 1 rush TD.
And then you talk about the character displayed on the field of both players. When they played one another that was one of the more incredible finishes I've seen in years. Gabbert started a drive at his own 24 yard line with 1:18 left to play, down 5 points. He drove all the way for a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the ball game, tossed in a successful 2 point conversion to go up 23-20. Then Christian Ponder gets the ball with 14 seconds left in the game on his own 31 yard line, actually gains 32 yards in 2 plays to give Blair Walsh a shot at a 55 yard field goal, which he MAKES to send it into overtime where the Vikings won.
And just this week, Gabbert struck again. With 40 seconds left down 17-16 at his own 20 yard line, he threw a strike to Cecil Shorts for an 80 yard TD to win the game. And Ponder? He only beat the San Francisco 49ers.
I'm not declaring mission accomplished for either player but certainly the past 3 weeks have to have given some people a little bit of pause on all the assumptions that were being made about the two based on their rookie seasons. -

Some good points in here!
OK, here is my .02. He looks very poised in the pocket, doesn't get the happy feet.. He doesn't look like a deer in the headlights when the blitz is on. He looks calm. I think he has the best arm strength of any of the post-Marino QBs. I'd like to see a little more touch on the shorted passes, but I guess that comes with practice. I guess you guys are right, it's hard to tell when he doesn't have a true playmaker to throw to. I hope Ireland finally can see that! -
How can anyone not be excited by what they've seen so far? Remember, T-Hill only has a handful of games under his belt as a QB. (This including his "career" in college). Henne on the other hand, was a 4 year starter at Michigan. Add the time Chad spent with the Dolphins and the advantage is overwhelming, yet where are the results? Tanehill is special. He was able to make adjustments and make the tipped passes a non-issue after just one game. Give the rookie some time and better weapons. I'm not jumping off the T-Hill bandwagon any time soon. Like the song says.. "the future's so bright I gotta wear shades."

Even an expert would need a crystal ball to know IMO.
I can pull up a thread I started years ago in which I questioned whether Chad Henne was good enough to be our quarterback of the future, and with the way everybody felt about him at the time, there was almost complete agreement he was.RevRick likes this. -
When you're dealing with rookie QBs there's a tendency to overreact to the positive things and the negative things. This is only exacerbated by how this board overreacts to EVERY game. After week 1 there were threads about us going 0-16. After week 2 there were threads about us making the playoffs. After week 3 there were threads calling for the release of our pro bowl kicker. You see what I'm getting at here? I wouldn't trust the general fan base of this board to have the emotional maturity to make an honest assessment of a player anyway. Much less a rookie QB after 3 games.

Yes. He drove us into FG range to tie the game, then in OT to win the game with practially no weapons on offense. He also showed good poise in the pocket.

If this question was asked after the Dolphins had completed the entire season and we could all see how Tannehill played over 16 games, the question might be relevant. Right now after three games, the question is ridiculous.
Better questions might be. Is Egnew ever going to see the field in the regular season, or is he just another draft bust? What ever happened to Charles Clay being an major part of the passing offense? He appears to have taken a giant step backwards in his development.
Are their any WR's on this team who can consistently get open, except for Bess?
The reality of the situation right now is that Tannehill is working with perhaps the worst receiving corp in the entire NFL. Until he has a true number one WR, and a quality TE who can get open down field. There is no way you can actually determine if he will turn out to be a quality starter in the NFL. -
I'm not saying these were his best plays or best drives, but they were very memorable and jump out for me and I think that's an example of him displaying franchise talent. We saw almost none of these moments from Beck, and Henne went entire games without anything to hang his hat on. -
How in the heck can you tell at this point either way.
-
Tannehill has had some flashes of a franchise qb. Doesn't seem to be easily rattled and led us down the field for game winning opportunities that were squandered by bad playcalling. His mistakes seem to be related to being a rookie adjusting to the NFL. Obviously there's not enough on tape to say one way or the other. Until this team gets serious about adding playmakers (ex. Atlanta) to the offense, it's going to be hard to judge one way or another.

The fan was an a$$hole, good for Irish for calling it like it is. Faith, I have a lot in Irish. Out from under the shadow of Bill Parcells, Irish is quietly putting together one of the best Offensive and defensive lines in football, starting to build depth, and has drafted what could be the QB we been begging for for years. Do we still have holes, absolutely. Irish has positioned us well in a very short time. He has also hired a coach who has started to reinstill the respectability we must have to entice top talent to want to come here. Next year we will have some of the highest available cap room in the NFL, almost 50 Million. Why most are over looking this remains a mystery. Next year we add so playmaking WRas and maybe a TE. So far since Parcells leaving I would give Irish an A-. And yes Marshall had to go and so did Vonte. Professionals are what we want on this team not distractions and guys who knowingly come into camp out of shape. WTF ...I don't get this feeling sorry for Davis, he was never that great anyway.
Answering the OP's question. Not enough data to say for sure. Looks promising though. He will definitely get better as he plays and will be serviceable, not a Dan Marino.
Go Phins!!!!

When I started the thread about Henne it was March of 2010, after his second season (first as a starter), and again there was almost complete agreement he was our QB of the future.
