I've seen a lot of people saying "can't pass up mcfadden" or "draft colt brennen" it's not going to happen. Parcells philosophy according to Mort is that he will rarely to never draft a RB in the top 5 or a QB in the first round.
Can't say as I blame him take a look at the top 4 QB in the NFL
Brady - 6th round
Manning - 1st
Romo - Undrafted
Favre - 2nd round
and as we all know running backs can be discovered in later rounds. AND he have RB, so why would do that?
NOTE: Mortenson was on the Dan Lebitard show last night and thats where I heard it.

We already have a franchise running back who will come back stronger than ever, and we already have a good quarterback prospect.
I think Parcells will really like Chris Long or Dorsey. -
Im not sure people undestand the role parcells will play. He is not going to be scouting and drafting according to what Im hearing. He will put the peopl in place that he feels will make the right decissions about the team. He will not be sitting in on Coaches sessions, or picking the talent we draft. He might have a role is talent evaluations but im not sure we will really ever hear from Bill..

Parcells did draft Pennington and Bledsoe in the first round...
He has never taken a DT in the first round, he has taken DE/LB's in the first. -
True Parcells prefers not to drafts QBs in the 1st round but Lemon and Beck are not his type of QB so its a possiility since Ryan fits the Parcells mold. Funny enough, Joe Flacco should jump up on everyone's dolphin radar since he also fits the Parcells mold
Right now Chris Long and Vernon Gholston fit the mold as most likely to be tabbed number one with Ryan a sleeper choice. If we go DE first look for Flacco to be drafted with our 2nd 2nd rounder
Forget about Dorsey and McFadden -
parcells believes top ten picks should have long careers greater then five years
-
I'm thinking it's gonna come down to Chris Long or Vernon Gholston. Everywhere he's been he's had a pass-rushing threat at OLB (LT, Willie McGinest, drafted DeMarcus Ware and Kevin Burnett in Dallas). If Gholston declares, that's who my $ is on, even if we trade down a few spots.
-
Don't agree. I think at least early on, he's going to have a very hands-on role. After he gets the organization setup the way he wants, with the right people in place, then he'll probably step back a bit. Just my opinion, I could be wrong... -
But the core issue is that his skill set is that of a 4-3 DT and not a 3-4 NT. A NT needs to hold up double-team blocks at the point of attack, and that responsibility is not worth $30-35M in guaranteed money. In a 4-3, he can be like Warren Sapp -- shoot the gaps and collapse the pocket. -

ps-thank goodness we arent drafting mcfadden. -
Regardless, I agree with Mort's premise that Parcells will make us bigger, with burly square defenders. I notice that literally every week when I'm watching the Dolphins simultaneously alongside every other team. We literally have almost zero defenders on the front seven who are ideally shaped for their position. Many are too narrow, like Holliday and JT. Some are too short like Zach. Roth is a bulked up wannabe with ridiculously narrow shoulders for that position. Traylor has had a terrific career but right now he's too fat and limited. Virtually the only one who looks the part is Crowder but he's like a kids toy improperly set to run around in circles.
Other teams have rugged and athletic front walls. About time we joined the menacing fun. -
...and you are merely speculating about the simms pick. -
I'd be surprised if we don't draft Dorsey out of the 1 spot, if things stand as they are today. Even with the injuries, he is regarded as one of those once in a decade type of players, which is what you look for in a top pick.
If we somehow land Jared Allen in free agency, I would expect Long to drop out of the picture.
Basically a ton is still to happen, and I look forward to all the back-and-forth debate, hopefully back on the original finheaven. -

and who's to say that we'll run a 3-4 exclusively? especially with Capers (and J. Taylor) probably departing this offseason.
Even if folks are right about Dorsey not being ideal for the 3-4, let's not just assume we're a full-time 3-4 team going into the draft. -
I think that Parcells philosophy will become most apparent next year in the following three areas:
1. Free Agency - the rep of Parcells makes it far more likely that a Free Agent will come to play here. There are some big names in FA right now like Bob Sanders, Haynesworth, Asante Samuels, Suggs. It is not clear which of these players will actually make it to FA but as of now we have a better chance to land them
2. Special Teams players- Parcells was an extremely thorough coach and believes strongly in the value of good ST players. This is a stark contrast to Cam who let a lot of the good ST players on the Fins leave. Look for Parcells to get some inexpensive but good ST players to shore up a terrible squad
3. Veteran depth - Parcells is continually looking to upgrade every player on his roster and I look for the Fins to sign a number of low to mid priced veteran players to add quality depth. -
Marcus Trufant is probably the best big-name player we have a shot at.
-
1. The Fins have a lot of room to sign Free Agents. The latest I read is that after signing the rookies they wll have $20 million to spend. That is more than enough to get any player that they target.
2. Cameron only started playing his starters on Special Teams after it was proven that the players that he had first started on ST were a complete disaster. Further, are you really suggestingt that it was solely the decision of Mueller to let great ST players like Travis Minor and Sammy Morris go? -
#13 overall, with a handful of free agents who will demand top money, does not equate to landing high-talent players.
-
So here are a few things that I've found while trying to learn more about Parcells. I read that Parcells said having a star RB is a great thing but teams can plug in a RB a still be successful. Teams like Kansas City, Vikings, and Bolts all have star RB's and are not doing that great. Green Bay has in Ryan Grant and are killing. Pats hardly ever run, they have had decent RB's but I wouldn't say they push for stars in that position(Morris, Dillon in decline, Faulk). Parcells went on to say later that, why pay 60+ million on the position when it really is a position that can be filled in pretty easily. Does this affect our draft and the possibility of getting Mcfadden? I think and hope so. I just like a guy who has a vision and is strong in his beliefs. That goes for everyone besides our president.
Second thing I read was how he(then Cowboys coach) and Bill Belichick were talking about how NFL players are now pampered and how they would both run very tough training camps. How worrying about keeping certain players healthy is not as important as getting players ready for the season. I think he has a point. Our team seem mentally weak this year, and despite trying to keep our players healthy we have had many injuries. So did having a "soft" training help or set up a weaker mind set for this team? This just really makes me think Cam and Bill have opposite approaches, and will this affect Cams job security.
Bill also had a 1st pick in the draft before and was open to trading down, but said if teams wanted to trade up, that they would have to "do whats right." That meant he would have to get back at least a pick in the top 15 among other things. This just shows me that if he does have say in this years draft thet he will not be doing anything stupid with our 1st pick. He is open to trading down but will not do it in weakness. Very comforting.
The last thing is not a biggie but I like alot. It was how he had Mario Williams ranked on top of his draft boards. I think he was right and jsut shows me he has an eye for talent. There are many other things that prove that as well.
Thats all for now.Last edited: Dec 20, 2007 -
i dont know im happy with bill coming here but to talk about the draft i like dorsey but i cant bare t see mcfadden to play for someone else when you know he is going to be great.

$20 million dollars is not enough to land high talent players. LMFAO!
Further, the team made zero effort to re-sign Minor or Morris. They were our top two tacklers last year on ST. This was clearly NOT a priority of Cam.
First you say I should have blamed Mueller for letting them go. Then you claim that the team could not have re-signed them. Any more rationalizations? -
Stop looking at things in a vacuum. There's more to bringing in free agents than just how much salary cap room you have. Your city, your organization's quality, your schemes, and what the other guys are offering are all factors.
Asante Samuel would look at our $20 million and laugh at us. Nate Clements landed an 8-year, $80 million contract (okay, it's actually a 6-year, $64 million contract, but still) and you expect $20 million in cap room to be enough to sign Samuel as well as the #1 draft pick? You're nuts.
Tired of people conditioned to believe that the head coach is responsible for everything that goes on. Morris and Minor wanted to be elsewhere. Morris went to New England for likely the same reasons that Welker wanted to go there, and Minor went to St. Louis likely for the same reasons as Randy McMichael.
We could have extended an offer to them, but if they didn't want to listen unless we overpaid them, what was the point?
Here's the reality of the situation: people don't want to play for Miami right now. The team has to start winning before people will want to play for us. This means we'll have to overpay for whatever free agents we bring in. That fantasy of bringing Asante Samuel to Miami? Take whatever he asks for, add a 20% premium because we're one of the worst teams in the NFL, and then maybe he'll come here. Maybe. -
And even then, the starters did not perform very well on ST. So if it is not a matter of talent on ST, what could it be then other then lack of motivation or poor coaching?
When I watched the Bears lose to the Vikes, I was struck at how good the Bears Special Teams were, from blocking for Hester to downing punts inside the ten to really getting down field on Kick Offs and punts.
BTW, we would be better served by resigning Hadnot and maybe Lehan and "Q" and some DT depth then trying to go deep for a Trufant or Saunders. -
We are expected to have $20 million in cap space after signing our rookies.
Further, the initial post posited that FA's would be more likey to want to come and play for Miami now that Parcells is here?
Is it really your argument that FA's are now less likely to want to come here?
Finally, your assertion that I'm "nut's" does not reflect well upon you nor upon the reputation of VIP members. -
I don't know where the QB note comes from. And actually according to Charlie Armey, Parcells wanted Rick Mirer in that draft, not Drew Bledsoe. But, he didn't have full control over personnel. If he had, he might have steered the discussion away from QBs, we don't know one way or the other. One thing we do know is Parcells acted as the Jets' GM for the 2000 Draft for Al Groh, and he took Pennington in the first round.
However, the RB comment is absolutely true. He just reiterated that belief yet again this Monday night prior to the Vikings-Bears game because Keyshawn teased him about how he kept telling Key that he'd never take a RB that high. Parcells defended his opinion and said that Adrian Peterson still hasn't proven he could be durable, and being durable is the hardest thing for a RB to prove at this level in the NFL.
On the other hand, he did give 1st and 3rd round draft picks plus a fatty contract to Curtis Martin...but I think that was after Martin had proved in 3 years of staying healthy that his running style lent itself to staying relatively injury free because he knew how to avoid contact and position his body to absorb or deflect blows. Curtis was infamous for that until he took the final injuries that did him in. -
Link on Fins projected Cap space
"According to NFL data, Miami is projected to be $31.4 million under the salary cap, which the league expects will be $116 million. But we are told the Dolphins' cap space actually will be closer to $20 million after factoring in incentives and tenders for exclusive and restricted free agents."
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Fins-could-have-20-million-worth-of-cap-space?urn=nfl,49992
So, this would include resigning our own free agents but not the draft class.
Still a lot of room under the cap for Parcells. -

Also for some reason Until your current GM gets fired I do not thik he will have as much of an Impact as many are thinking
