The guards are all new with FA signings Ben Grubbs and Jake Scott. Grubbs is a multi-time pro bowl selection while Scott is one of the most underrated guards in the league. I probably overpaid for Grubbs but I had like 13M in cap at the time and figured why not because it wasnt getting used any other way. Positional Analysis: The defensive line for Pittsburgh underwent an overhaul as the GM was intent on bringing in new players, getting younger, and more talented. With Casey Hampton not exactly a spring chicken, he was cut and resigned to a cheaper rate while free agent Paul Soliai was a priority signing to man the NT position. Terrell Troup was acquired to be his backup with Hampton 3rd string. Brett Kiesel remains at one end while Kendall Langford joins his ex-Dolphin Teammate in Pittsburgh. Langford is a very solid run stuffing end while Kiesel mans the open end spot with 2nd year man Cameron Heyward breathing down his neck for the starting role. Alex Carrington had a fine rookie year in Buffalo and was brought in to challenge Langford and provide adequate depth.

Analysis: Mark Sanchez struggled last year, and needs competition which is why Alex Smith was brought in. Smith brings a lot of experience as a starter and finally played well enough to take the 49ers to the NFC Conference game. He's a more than capable backup that will have the Jets not miss a beat in case of injury or benching of Sanchez.

Ryan Lindley has good size and a nice arm that translates to the pros, but his accuracy will keep him as a project, similar to a guy I took last year just without the running ability.

Analysis: I wasn't a fan of Shonn Greene or the backfield. I brought in Hillis who had a down year for a sixth round pick, which should be a good gamble. Ronnie Hillman has been compared to Sproles, but I think he can turn out to be another Ray Rice, where they thought he was too small but should surprise with his speed. Ganaway is a powerback who I hope could become a feature back if the other options don't work out, for now we'll try him at fullback similar to a Reuben Droughns type.

Chris Rainey will be lined up all over the field, and see most of his time as a return man. Bilal Powell will have to work for playing time.

Brandon Bostick is a small school prospect who is a poor man's Aaron Hernandez which should bring us another dimension to the offense as we could always use a bigger body to split outside and catch some passes.

Analysis: The offensive line remain mostly intact, we've upgraded the right side with Trent Williams who offers an elite bookend as someone who can play left tackle as well, but has experience playing on the right at the college level. Jeff Backus is a tough player that has started all 172 games he's played and offers insurance if either starting tackles get hurt.

Dan Connolly offers versatility at all three interior line positions, and showed he can plug in and start when needed as seen when Koppen went down for the Patriots. Ben Jones will be Mangold's primary backup as the Jets struggled when he was out last season. Jones will also see time at guard as well and could start if Slauson struggles. Matt McCants is a backup right tackle and a project player, he can also back up in the marching band as needed.

Analysis: One of the strengths of the team last year, my top priority was to resign Pouha as he was one of the best run stuffing nose tackles last year. Devito and Wilkerson return to their starting roles at defensive end, and Ellis continues to develop. Adam Carriker has really started to come into his own as a defensive end for the Redskins last season, and brings in depth just in case injuries take their toll on Devito once again.

Brandon Thompson is another big body that will be used as a run stuffer at defensive end, but will get looks at nose tackle as well. Chandler Jones will have to add some more weight and will give us more of a pure pass rusher at the end position and could see time at outside linebacker. Conrath has a long body and arms and will help try and block kicks on special teams where he has had a bit of success. Jean-Baptiste is raw talent that will sit behind Pouha and Ellis and learn.

Analysis: An underachieving unit that needed some tweaks, unfortunately I had to jettison my best linebacker based on salary issues. Bryan Thomas was resigned to man the left outside linebacker position where he has been successful. We'll once again rely on a rotation of players at the rush linebacker position where Aaron Maybin showed some ability and hopefully Merriman can come back offer a little of the old Lights Out as well. Calvin Pace is the projected starter in front of Maybin and Merriman but could get moved to the opposite side as well.

Dan Connor showed that he can be a solid starter as a pro and will take Bart Scott's position. Dont'a Hightower will have to replace David Harris but I know he'll be a solid pro with a lot of different skills to offer, definitely a leader. I like Hightower as much as I did Demeco Ryans coming out and he was the only linebacker I was looking at this draft. Tank Carder will backup both Connor and Hightower.

Eric Smith struggled at free safety last year, which prompted us to bring in Chris Conte but for insurance we drafted Harrison smith who will be the projected starter for now. If Conte takes a big leap forward you could see Harrison Smith moving into the starting role at Strong Safety and Chris Harris back into the nickel corner and replacement for Cromartie in the next season or two.

Saint Louis Rams

HC Tony Sparano- Before I hired Tony I made it very clear that his role as a HC will be strictly a scheduling and a motivating one, he will have zero authority as far as playcalling on either side of the ball. He has 2 specialists at their craft beneath him so his input is not needed, he just gets to hold the red challenge flag.

OC Josh McDaniels- Josh can run an offense pretty damn well, Bill welcomed him back with open arms for a reason.

DC Keith Butler- I'm a huge fan of the 3-4 and an even huger fan of coaches who specialize in it. Butler has run the type of 3-4 that I like and that is effective so I was excited to make him a Ram.

2012 Offseason plan

This is a team that was flat out pathetic last season. 0-6 in the division and finding the endzone was a rarity. But when I took over this team I didnt feel like it needed a complete overhaul just some leadership and depth since the Rams were bitten hard by the injury bug. The offensive line had some pretty expensive guys that played flat out horrible, lost their best WR and Bradford's fav target in Amendola the very first game, and had 14, yes 14 different starting DB's last season. So to me it was about adding talented guys to the team and depth because the 2011 Rams didnt have much of either.

Offensive Philosophy

Balance. To me unless you have Brees, Brady or Rodgers you have to have a balanced offense. Bradford is a franchise QB and while many think he will be a top 5-6 QB sooner than later as of now he needs some help. Steven Jackson provides a dangerous threat at RB and it has always been my opinion that you need players who all compliment each other well. I have always aimed to acquire a slot WR who can work the zones and beat a LB with sharp cuts and plays smart, you need a WR who can stretch the defense...you dont want the S to be able to cheat in you want him to worry about helping the CB, and you need a WR who can get open on just about every route in your arsenal and that is your #1. Versatile TE's has also been something I have looked for every year I have been a GM, the position is changing...a TE can be a matchup nightmare for the opposition. The top 3 offenses last year? Here is a quick list of their TE's: Finley, Hernandez, Gronkowski, Graham, it's no accident. We plan on running a single back set with option's for Bradford to split his TE out or stay inside depending on what he see's at the LOS. But for all these WANTS out of an offense you simply have to have protection. If your QB only gets about 2.5 seconds per dropback I dont care if your Tom Brady, your offense will not be effective. And if every time you get a handoff you have to make the 1st guy miss to gain a yard? i dont care if your Steven Jackson, you wont have much success. A solid OL is the oil that allows your engine to run I perfer a Zone blocking scheme so I need smart OL who work hard on every play. With that being said....here is your new and improved Rams offense.



QB

Sam Bradford- There is little doubt that most believe Bradford will be a very good QB but his offensive line truely put a dent in his progress. After a promising rookie year Bradford was sacked 34 times in just 9.5 games! That my friends is a bad situation, with an improved OL, more weapons, and his fav WR back in the lineup Sam is ready to show why the Rams were able to be sellers with the #2 overall pick and pass on a talent like RGIII.


RB

Steven Jackson- I will be honest with you, I didnt give this man enough credit initially. On the surface I assumed he was a beat up aging back with a high cap # and someone who was likely to be replaced. Then I looked deeper....and came away impressed. With no passing game and a fore mentioned HORRIBLE OL, Steven Jackson still managed an 1,100 yard season and averaged 4.4 YPC. With those surroundings? Mr Jackson? At 28 years old, your staying on my football team. Also Jackson has missed 2 starts in 3 years, so the durability question has been answered.

TE's

Lance Kendricks- Lance was a rookie last season for the Rams and also fell victim to the poor OL play, forced to stay in and block more than a rookie should have to, Kendricks still showed flashes of what he can do when given the chance.

Ladaruis Green- With the revamped OL we will have the option of using our TE as another WR on passing plays, Green made a number of big plays in college and many people have compared him to Jermichael Finley. Getting both TE's on the field at the same time in certain formations will be dangerous for the opposition.


WR's

Brandon Lloyd- Traded to the Rams in the middle of the year Brandon was the lone bright spot in the passing game. In his career 27 starts (less than 2 seasons) here are Lloyd's carren numbers under McDaniels.... 128 catches, 2,131 yards, 16 TD's, I think it's safe to say that Josh and Brandon are a pretty good marriage.

Brandon Gibson/Ted Ginn- Whoever wins this job will be my WR that can keep your S honest, I give a slight edge to Gibson who has connected with Bradford on some impressive plays the past 2 seasons, and Ginn when called upon can beat any CB deep (Hi Revis) but the only QB he has ever had with the arm to get him deep was too afraid to make a mistake. I'll be confident in either guy's ability to get loose.

Danny Amendola- Coming off a season where Danny had 2,000+ all purpose yardage and 85 receptions, Amendola broke his forearm in the 1st game of the season. Bradfords most reliable target was gone that fast. But when your an undrafted 5'10 185 lb guy with little speed and you still become as good of a player that Danny is? An injury to your forearm certainly wont hold you down for too long. Every Rams fan should be very happy to see this kid return in the slot.


OL

LT Will Svatek- When Sam Baker went down in stepped the 29 year old Svatek, and all he did was grade out as one of the best LT's in football the rest of the season. When Baker was healthy it didnt matter, the Falcons found the ideal LT they had been looking for. I was very happy to acquire Will as he was perfect for what I wanted to do, and any doubt to his ability? Go ask Jared Allen and his 22 sacks and how he was shut out by big Will.

LG Justin Blalock- Another Falcon who made his way to the Rams, here is what Gil Brandt had to say when he felt Justin was snubbed from the Pro Bowl "it's hard to find a better, more consistent player at his position. Blalock, who has started 76 career games, plays hard on every down and never makes mistakes."


C-Chris Meyers- I knew the minute I looked at the roster Jason Brown and his overpaid behind was a goner, on to Chris Meyers who finally got his due and was selected to the Pro Bowl this past season. The 30 year old Meyers just does NOT give up sacks and anchored one of the best OL's in football last season. To further indicate his importance the Houston Texans against it vs the cap watched Mario Williams, Eric Winston walk and was forced to trade Dameco Ryans...yet resigned FA Chris Meyers to a 26 Million dollar deal with 14 of it guaranteed.


RG Kyle Cook- Yet another solid blue collar OL, Cook has been a very good C for the Bengals the past 4 seasons but will be moved to RG where we fully expect him to flourish. Holding up well, when facing the Ravens and Steelers 4 times a season. We have little doubt Kyle cant play at a pro bowl level at RG.

RT Harvey Dahl- When the incumbent Jason Smith was injured last season for the Rams, Dahl took over at RT and played his *** off. The only retained starter from last season Dahl was by himself as a good football player upfront, grading out as one of the best OL in all of football. I have a feeling Steven Jackson is off somewhere fist pumping at his brand new OL and not one of these guys is over 30.

DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY

As with my other defenses in GML history I want to attack, attack, attack. I will run an aggressive 3-4 and ALL of my LB's are threats to blitz at anytime. I want to put pressure on offenses 80% of the time so the other 20% you rush into mistakes because you expect it. Ive said before that IMO an average CB can look really good when his front 7 brings the heat. I will also run a 3-3-5 on alot of 3rd downs. I really like the depth I have ecspecially on the front 7 these guys will be kept pretty fresh.

LDE Ryan Pickett
Oft Injured in 2011 Pickett played well for the Packers SB team and transitioned from DT to DE fairly well. Ryan was franchised that same year and Im proud to say I got him for 400K.

DT Dontari Poe
Poe is a physical freak who on the surface may appear to some as your typical "workout warrior" but many scouts feel he is much more than that, praised for his humbleness and work ethic Poe will no doubt be penetrating the pocket for the Rams this season.

RDE Peria Jerry
Jerry must hold off veteran Ty Warren but what he brings to St Louis is a healthy knee, wich hasnt been the case any other year in his short career. Jerry has the potential to be a great 3-4 DE for me because he can penetrate and eat up blockers freeing up my LB's.

SOLB LeRoy Hill
Leroy is a 3 down LB who is very very good against the run and managed 4 sacks depite playing more in coverage than in rush. Hill can stunt outside or come flying through your B gaps, love his versatility.

SILB E.J Henderson
Will he be able to hold off the consistent Clark Haggans in TC? We will see, Henderson is strong in coverage as well as against the run.

WILB James Lauranitis
The Rams best defensive player a year ago, JL is a sideline to sideline LB who goes out and makes plays on a consistent basis, we expect a pro bowl birth for him this year.

WOLB Robert Quinn
Robert played well as a rookie in the 4-3 DE, was a disrupting force for QB's. Quinn who is only 21 years old has the speed and power to be a 12 sack OLB for us.

CB Ron Bartell
Bartell was the 1st of the starting Rams CB's to go down with a season ending injury, While he didnt catch alot of INT's Bartell did a very good job shadowing the oppositions #1 WR the past 3 seasons. We are confident he can continue to do that.

CB Leon Hall
Now this kid on the other hand makes big plays, he will gamble so it becomes a risk/reward but when you factor in his ability to play against the run he is a solid starter for our team.

Nickle Bradley Fletcher/ Terrance Newman
Fletcher vs Newman should be interesting, Fletcher is a solid consistent football player who you basically know what your getting...Newman has the talent and a new team and a demotion may humble him enough to return to his old self.

SS Quinton Mikell
Mikell showed why he got paid what he did in FA, he is a very good tackler and forced 5 fumbles last season...he struggled against the pass but I will attribute alot of that to the revolving door of CB's the Rams had last season. One can only imagine the blown coverages and miscommunications in that unit.

FS Eric Weddle
The 27 year old is starting to warrant talks as maybe the best young player at his position, teams continue to look at Eric Weddle and not be afraid, but the Pro Bowler just keeps making plays. In todays NFL your last line of defense is very important, so picking up Weddle was huge for this team.



Summary
I felt like I maximized my value when taking over the worst team in football who wasnt getting Andrew Luck, the team could still use a top 5 WR but Andre Johnson's dont grow on trees. Im most proud of my OL, a unit that allowed an NFL worst 55 sacks was in dire need of a makeover.....Im confident my new unit wont sniff that number and Steven Jackson will have a chance to have his best year yet. I also really like my depth on defense, 6 of my 8 LB's were starters in 2011 and the secondary now has stability and a few playmakers as compared to the years before. Is this the BEST team in the GML? No. But will this unit be 2-14 with 12 points scored per game and 25 allowed next year?? Not even close.

Something just wasn't right with Norv Turner. He is a solid coach and the team had good talent. But he just wasn't quite getting everything he could from the team. So I decided to go with a guy seemingly much different than Turner. I also wanted to bring in Rex Ryan to help out a struggling defense, who along with Dom Capers should bring stability and aggressiveness to the team. Initially, the plan was to let Clyde Christensen and Philip Rivers have a lot of freedom to do what they felt comfortable with. But as I'll explain, we changed the plan. Regardless, Clyde has a lot of experience working with QBs and we are confident he will help keep the offense on track after some changes.

Obviously the big change here is Philip Rivers. We love Philip. He is one of the best QBs in the game. But he carried a high price tag. So we traded him for some draft picks and Ryan Mallet. While we really like Mallet, we couldn't overlook the opportunity to get a world class athlete and highly productive college QB in Robert Griffin. One thing we are particularly looking forward to with Griffin that we didn't have with Rivers is his mobility. The ability to save or create plays when protection breaks down is a valuable skill that, along with his other attributes, will make Griffin dangerous even as a rookie. And we kept the veteran Billy Volek around in order to help mentor our two young QBs who will compete for the job.

The receiving unit was one of the strengths of the team going into the offseason. Thus we wanted to largely keep it in tact. That meant tagging Vincent Jackson early on. While Malcolm Floyd was very good, we decided to go younger and cheaper with the trade for Darrius Heyward-Bey who is coming off a solid season and gives us the speed to keep our aggressive, downfield passing offense going. With Bey and Jackson occupying the vertical lengths of the field, that should give the great Antonio Gates a lot of opportunities to continue being highly productive.

Summary

This was a weird team the last few years. Until last year, they did everything well but just had some bad luck. And last year the defense fell off. So I didn't think I could sit back and just try to sign a few cheap guys to patch up the holes on defense. And with Rivers' salary and the need to resign Vincent Jackson I didn't think I could improve the defense enough. In the end, I gave up Rivers and Eric Weddle in order to get Griffin, Mallet and the opportunity to sign some good free agents. Offensively, aside from QB, I think we are slightly improved. Defensively, I think we are definitely improved, both with talent and coaching. Honestly, in the end, we will probably be a bit worse than we were last year just because of the Rivers/Griffin swap. But financially and overall talent wise, I think we are in better shape medium and long term.

 

New York Giants

Despite winning the Super Bowl last year the Giants were 9-7 and had some key free agents. We improved the overall team depth and brought in number of playmakers on defense (Ngata, Posluzny, Spencer, Rogers). The 2012 Giants are primed for a repeat and have numerous amount of young players that this team is setup well for the future as well as this season.

ANALYSIS
My goal offensively was to add depth. We brought in Ryan Tannehill with our first round pick. Tony Romo is a very good QB, but Tannehill will hopefully push him within a couple of years. I love Tannehill's arm strength, athleticism and intelligence. Also coming from the draft were Brian Quick and Rishard Matthews, who join Eddie Royal as additions to our already talented receiving corps. Scott Chandler - who I believe to be one of the more underrated TEs in the NFL - is just icing on the cake. Romo now has Bryant, Austin, Witten, Chandler, and Royal - all of which are proven mismatches in this league. Greg Smith is another sleeper FA that I brought aboard at the TE position.

Paul McQuistan was referred to as the MVP of the Seattle OL last season, and was one of the moves I am most happy with, as he cost me barely anything. Tyron Smith was impressive as a rookie, and will be the starting LT. Edwin Williams played center for the Bears last season, but will move to LG, which I think is a better fit. Bill Nagy moves from RG to his natural position of C. Joe Berger will likely be the starting RG, but like the others he can play in many spots. There really is a ton of versatility on the interior of the offensive line. The tackle position doesn't have a lot depth, so there may be a move made before the season starts.

At the RB position, I wanted to bring in a reliable veteran to replace the unreliable Felix Jones, and there was no better fit than BenJarvus Green Ellis. Green-Ellis has 0 career fumbles as opposed to Jones' 5 in 2011 alone, in addition to being a better blocker. While DeMarco Murray may be the starting RB, Green Ellis is the closer. Lamar Miller was drafted, and hopefully will develop into a solid contributor.

ANALYSIS
Defensively I had my work cut out for me. There just wasn't very much talent. I think did I good job of changing that. I brought in Jarret Johnson and Jameel McClain from Baltimore. Paired with DeMarcus Ware and a rising star in Sean Lee, I feel that I have the best LB unit in the NFL. Not only do I have the most talented LB group, I also have the deepest. Victor Butler and Chris Kelsay could both be starters on a lot of teams. In front of those LBs are a lot of very talented defensive lineman. Obviously Jay Ratliff is a great player. But I'm really excited about D'Anthony Smith. His play in limited snaps last year in Jacksonville was extremely impressive to me. He's a great interior pass-rusher, and we look forward to getting him and Ratliff on the field together in our "heavy" nickel packages. Add in talent like Jason Hatcher, Kenyon Coleman, Jayme Mitchell, and Andre Carter, and the front-7 is downright scary.

The secondary was probably the worst part of the team I inherited, but I feel I turned it around. Nate Clements was very solid for CIN last season, and Jarraud Powers was very underrated for Indianapolis. I expect Powers to really become a household name at the position now that he's in a good situation. Both are very good CBs that I'm comfortable with. Mike Jenkins is no longer a starter, but he will be the team's nickel back and could take over a starting spot. I also brought in Reggie Nelson to be the starting FS, he'll be backed up by Usama Young. I think Nelson has really become the player everyone has expected, and I'm hoping he can capitalize on what the front-7 will create. Craig Steltz is a FA signing I'm really happy with. He's an extremely instinctual and fundamentally sound SS. He'll be backed up by Joe Lefeged, who is young but has shown signs of promise.

Overall this defense has a chance to be very special. Pettine will bring a toughness to this team that hasn't been seen in past seasons. That all starts with the defense, especially the front-7. Expect multiple-fronts, and a lot of different combinations of personnel.

----Keeping Trent Cole was vital to my defense, while also building behind him the safetys and linebacking corps. I think I certainly succeeded with that. Adding Rolando McClain and David Harris, bringing in depth with guys like Matt Roth and Brady Poppinga and keeping Casey Matthews I took a weakness and made it a solid group. Keeping Asomugha and Dominque Rogers was key as well as building behind them, my safety group. During the draft I made a HUGE deal to get rid of Michael Vicks gigantic contract, and bring in Eric Berry which is a HUGE move for my secondary. I also added Rahim Moore who had a very good start to his career in Denver, and Chris Clemmons to shore up the remaining of my nickle/dime and special teams depth. I am confident in my defense now....so much more than when I took the team over. Another big key was adding playmakers on the defensive line. I brought in Erik Walden....who went to Greenbay from Miami and had good success rushing the passer. I also traded for last years first round pick Nick Fairley, signed Raheem Brock, and feel my front 7 and my entire defense as a whole, are a tons better.

Other notable signings....Gary Guyton and Tim Dobbins.

On offense. Obviously I got rid of Vick....I drafted Brandon Weeden and got Matt Cassell in here as well to compete for a starting job. Keeping McCoy is a win in itself. Franchise tagging DeSean Jackson was huge for me, as well as the trade done early in the GM league but should not be forgotten....was me getting Andre Johnson. I resigned Steve Smith, traded for Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace....good special team/high ceiling guys and took a flyer on Roy Williams....who yes is a gigantic bust, but at one time was a real good WR, and I think could excell in an offense where he is a 3rd or 4th option behind studs.

Brandon Weeden or Matt Cassel can come in right now, with these playmakers, and make some noise. The defense is good enough to stop anyone, and I feel I took the Eagles from an already solid team, to a more complete team ready to win it all.

Write up:

Offense: My over all plan was to make this already young team even younger, while adding talent. I felt like I did so. I was already gifted with one of the best young QB-WR duos in the league (Dalton to Green), but decided to give Andy Dalton even more weapons to throw to. Alshon Jeffery has ridiculous size/athleticism to go along with some of the best hands I've seen in a while. Reminds me a lot like Brandon Marshall, with better hands. I also decided to add another big WR with incredible size and speed- Terrelle Pryor (6'6, 4.36 speed). Not to mention, I have one of the better slot receivers in the league coming back off of injury, in Jordan Shipley. I wanted to go with 2 TE sets, since that seems to be the new trend in the league, especially with pass heavy offenses like mine, but TEs seemed to be over priced in this league, so I decided to spend my money elsewhere, while keeping a stud in Jermaine Gresham and Colin Cochart who is a nasty run blocker. I used that saved money towards my offensive line to protect my young QB, who is still developing. Carl Nicks and Chad Rinehart were my prize winnings in Free Agency and I decided to bring in Jason Spitz, considering I've always liked him and I had him when last season with the Panthers when I won the SB. I felt like he was the key ingredient to a SB team. Lastly, my RB position. You all may not be incredibly impressed with it, but I refuse to overspend on RBs since they can be found anywhere for cheap. I've always been a firm believer that most RBs are a product of their offensive line/offensive system (there are obviously some exceptions). So, instead of paying a high price on 1 RB, I paid a low price on 2 young RBs. Odds are one of them should pan out decently.

Defense: I wanted to completely revamp this defense. I love the defensive line, but I wanted to make it even better. We desperately needed one more pass rusher opposite of Dunlap, so I added 3 more. I also wanted to make my interior DL as deep as possible, so my big boys could get some rest and be 100% when they are out on the field. My goal was to make my DL as versatile as possible for different situations...for example:

base 4-3 DL: Dunlap-Bunkley-Atkins-Clayborn
3-4 DL: Atkins-Bunkley-Douzable (with Nick Perry and Manny Lawson playing the OLB positions)
nickel D in passing situations: Clayborn-Dunlap-Atkins-Perry

My LB corps may not seem incredibly scary, but I tried to make it as deep as possible with a lot of young potential. Also, I realized since my DL was so good and deep, I wouldn't need a dominant LB corps. Regardless, I am satisfied with Lawson/Muckelroy/Vobora. I wanted to spend big money on my secondary this season since it has now become a passing league. So I paid a high price for pass rushers (as in 1st round picks) and I paid a high price for CBs (as in money). Grimes/Carr may very well be the best CB duo in this league. If not, at least I have Minnifield (who imo has the best pure coverage skills in this draft, but lacks the size and speed that other CBs have). I feel like in some nickel situations, I could have Brandon Carr play the slot corner position, with Grimes and Minnifield on the outside. I love my safeties. All of them are young and all of them are rangy.

Jacksonville Jaguars - Final Roster

First off, thanks to everyone for having me. I know I’m not a board regular, so I appreciate the opportunity to participate. This was definitely a good time and I hope to be part of the GM League next year.
Opening Statement:

Let me be clear. Winning the Rookie of the Year award would be awesome and a great honor, but I entered the league to win the whole thing. With a look at the roster I started with and the one I ended with, I feel confident that I should be in contention for GM of the Year.

When UCF FINatic first asked me to join the league, he told me that running the Jaguars would be an uphill battle. As a Jacksonville fan, I was all too aware of the challenges that were ahead of me: The league’s worst offense with gaping holes across the depth chart, a poor a coaching staff and the reputation that comes with a disinterested fan base in a small media market.

Basically, it was a gig that no one wanted. My hope is that my inexperience on this league and Jacksonville’s obscurity do not hurt me during voting.

Not knowing the ins and out of the league and how things went, I asked my friend and football aficionado Ashy Larry to help me with personnel decisions. We deiced that there were five goals we needed to accomplish to have a shot of winning GM of the Year:

1.) Bring in a proven quarterback to immediately upgrade the NFL’s worse passing attack. Just as important, we wanted someone that could mentor Blaine Gabbert and give the promising but often flustered youngster time to learn (a la Aaron Rogers in Green Bay, without the Brett Favre drama.)

2.) Hire a proficient offensive coach that could mold quarterbacks and run a well-balanced offense.

3.) Add a primary and secondary receiver.

4.) Keep a strong defense (ranked No. 6 in the NFL, which is amazing considering the No. 32 offense) intact while upgrading our defensive ends and overall depth.

5.) Finally, we wanted to turn the team into a contender while not completely mortgaging our long-term future.

I will expound upon these objectives at the end of my post. I will say this: using a stat-based philosophy—blended with a conscious effort to consider chemistry and find players that fit specific roles—we cut the fat, built around our strengths and achieved all of our goals.

Offense

Quarterback
QB - Peyton Manning ($7,400,000) - Doctors have written off injury risk. The only concern is his arm strength. With multiple playoff teams bidding on the future HOF QB this offseason, we feel that he should be at or close to full strength.

Backup
QB - Blaine Gabbert ($954,400) - Putrid rookie season cannot be ignored, but he did display physical tools to be an NFL QB. Time behind Manning (and competent WRs) will do a world of good.

Running Back/ Fullback
RB - Maurice Jones-Drew ($4,450,000) - NFL’s leading rusher in 2011 and No. 2 RB by Pro Football Focus. Nuff said.

FB – Ovie Mughelli ($1,500,000) – MCL tear in Week 7 ended 2011 season, but it’s an easy injury to overcome. Prior to that, Mughelli was ranked the No.1 FB in 2009 and 2010 by PFF.

Backups
RB - Rashad Jennings ($565,000) – Was on IR in 2011 but didn’t require knee surgery, so he should be ready to build off of his 2010 campaign (84 rushes, 459 yards).

RB - Jerious Norwood ($300,000) – As our third RB, we’re hoping he can regain some of his success from ATL days.

FB - Montell Owens ($300,000) – Excellent special teams player brings value as a RB/FB too.

Wide Receivers
Z - Reggie Wayne ($9,521,000) – Don’t write him off yet. He was targeted less without Peyton at QB last year but dropped only two passes, proving he’s as consistent as ever. Pairing back up with Manning, we should see him back in the 1,000-yard club again.

X - Malcom Floyd ($3,000,000) – Floyd was a big snag for us, giving Manning a big (6-5, 225), productive (856 yards, 5 TDs in 11 games) target to go next to Wayne. Averaged 4.5 yards per pass route, giving him one of the best totals in the NFL.

Y(SL) - Mike Thomas ($565,000) – Finally, Thomas can move to the slot where he best belongs. His quickness and ability to get open on underneath patterns will be a huge asset to our QBs as they develop chemistry within the offense.

Backups
WR - Cecil Shorts ($465,000) – The rookies struggled last year but we’ll hold on to him for the year and try to utilize his quickness in the slot.

WR - Kassim Osgood ($300,000) – Pro Bowl special teams player adds solid depth.

WR - Ryan Broyles (R) ($350,000) – Coming off an ACL injury, he might be ready to go my midseason. A top-three talent at WR in this draft if he wasn’t hurt. Reminds us a little of Marvin Harrison.

Tight End
TE - Brent Celek ($1,909,000) – Andy Reid and Peyton Manning love using their tight ends, so expectations are high for Celek in our offense. He played in all 16 games last year, despite a sports hernia and torn labrum, so the dude is tough. Logged 53 catches, 738 rec yards and 5 TDs in last 11 games of 2011 season.

Backups
TE - Leonard Pope ($300,000) – A strong blocker with excellent size (6-8, 265) and enough receiving skills to matter (200+ yards last year) as a second TE.
TE – Brian Linthicum ($350,000) – A late pick (not taken by me, sorry guys), he has potential as a receiving tight end. Good hands, good initial burst off the line.

Offensive Line
LT – Eugene Monroe ($1,682,500) – Graded out as a top 15 LT last year and at 25 years-old, he’s still not in the prime of his career. Definitely a cornerstone for our offensive line.

LG – Mike Iupati ($703,500) – A top six OG in terms of run blocking last year. At 24, him and Monroe will likely give the Jaguars one of, if not the, best LT/LG combo in the NFL over the next several seasons.

C – Brad Meester ($500,000) – Seasoned veteran is still playing at a high level and adds consistency to the offense.

RG – Uche Nwaneri ($849,000) – One of the few bright spots for the Jaguars’ offense last year, he was ranked as one of the NFL’s top RGs last year.

RT – Jammal Brown ($3,000,000) – Has taken yoga this offseason to improve flexibility and break up scar tissue from left hip injuries. If he can get back to old form, he’ll solidify a very good offensive line.

Backups
LT - Cameron Bradfield ($300,000) – Really showed glimpses as a rookie last season (+2.8 grade by PFF). He’ll provide excellent depth behind Monroe and could get a shot at starting RT.

LG – Brandon Brooks (R), ($450,000) – Brooks was good value for us in the third round. With a lot of experience and good fundamental skills all around, he seems to have a bright future.

C – Brett Romberg ($300,000) – A former starter, he gives us experience and a safety blanket incase anything were to happen to Meester.

RG - Montrae Holland ($300,000) – Torn bicep injury ended a stellar (+8 grade by PFF) 2011 season. Easily a starter when healthy.

RT – Sean Locklear ($500,000) – Excellent pass blocker but marginal run blocker. With an aging Manning at QB, his pass-pro skills will come in handy. Also has the ability to play LT.

Philosophy: With Andy Reid as our head coach and proven quarterback guru (and Reid disciple) as the signal caller, the Jaguars’ offense will be predicated on much of what has made Reid’s offense so successful this past decade. Obviously with Manning at the helm, the West Coast offense must be adapted some. We will utilize the fast-paced system that Manning is accustomed to, but will implement the 3-5-step drops and quick throws that make the West Coast offense work, with just less rollouts. With Maurice Jones-Drew as our top RB and pass-catching TE Brent Celek in the mix, we will rely heavily on play-action passes and look methodically pick teams apart with short gains before taking shots down field.

QB: As stated, we wanted to get a proven veteran to mentor Gabbert. We got that with Manning, a future HOF who still is a game-changer. He improves our offense drastically. His addition alone probably takes the team from 32 to 15.

RB/FB: MJD will be the focal point of the offense, but getting Jennings touches to relieve the All Pro is important for MJD’s longevity. At FB, we liked Greg Jones, but Mughelli was a top FB while Jones was Top 5, and Mughelli was twice as cheap. Owens has versatility as RB, FB and STs player.

WR: The worst WR corps in the NFL got a major upgrade in Wayne and Floyd. Both are capable No. 1s in this league and can get it done on short, intermediate and deep patterns. Getting Thomas to the slot increases his value significantly. He can do a lot of damage there. Everyone fits their role to a tee.

TE: This will be a position we rely on heavily and we’re fortunate to have an extremely productive, capable pass catcher in Celek. He will open things up a ton for our offense. He is twice as cheap as Marcedes Lewis, who checked out last year after signing a big contract.

OL: We didn’t need too much of an upgrade here aside from LG and RT. LG Will Rackley was horrible as a rookie (-35.00 rating by PFF) and RT Guy Whimper was in the negative too. Iupati strengthens left side significantly at was basically our first-round pick. Brown is a wildcard at RT and a very good player if healthy. If not, we have several options to replace him and feel good about the depth there. Plus, anyone is better than Rackley.

Defense

Defensive Line
RE - Osi Umenyiora ($3,975,000) – Finally, the Jaguars get their much-needed pass rusher (9 sacks in 9 games last year.) He was a top 15 pass-rusher according to PFF’s Pass Rusher Productivity stat. Consistent pass-rusher throughout his career.

DT – Tyson Alualu ($1,212,500) – Nagging injuries led to a sophomore slump after a strong rookie year. Mosley and Martin will push him.

DT - Terrance Knighton ($565,000) – “Pot Roast” is a dominant run-stuffer, spearheading a Jacksonville run defense that finished in the top 10 of the NFL last year. Conditioning has been an issue, so we’re hoping that Martin will push him as well.

LE - Justin Smith ($5,875,000) – Smith is excellent against the run and solidifies our defensive front. Has the versatility to play inside as well. Considered an MVP candidate by PFF.

Backups
RE - Lawrence Sidbury ($565,000) – Finished with four sacks last year and should allow us to get creative on passing downs. Really finished the year strong, getting pressure on the QB on around 17 percent of his pass rushes in second-half of the season.

DT - Mike Martin (R) ( $350,000) – High-motor rookie has experience playing nose tackle in college. With 37 starts in his collegiate career, he’s ready to jump into the DT rotation.

DT - C.J. Mosley ($300,000) – Really stepped up for injured DTs last year (323 snaps last season, including three starts), so we brought him back at a great value. Solid run-stuffer, poor against the pass rush, he’s a situational player that can replace Knighton if he goes down.

LE – John Chick ($300,000) – Was coming on as a situational pass rusher before (20 pressures in 180 snaps) before a missed holding call resulted in a knee injury, ending his season.

DE – James Hall ($300,000) – He’s seasoned at 35, but has been extremely consistent ( 6 sacks per year last 5 years) and will be an awesome situations pass rusher for us.

Linebackers

SAM – Daryl Smith ($4,700,000) – Call him Mr. Consistently. He graded out as one of the NFL’s top OLBS for the second straight year. Not a household name, but football aficionados know that Smith is one of the game’s elite LBs.

MIKE – Kelvin Sheppard ($480,000) – We lose Posluszny but add a more athletic LB with tons of upside. Started the last nine games of the year and is considered to be a breakout LB in 2012. Experience in 3-4 and 4-3 scheme. Only 24.

WILL – Keith Rivers – A superb talent…when healthy. Injuries have hindered him during his career, but if healthy, he gives us an elite LB group. Depth behind him lessens injury concerns.

Backups
LB – Thomas Howard ($2,500,000) – Logged 99 tackles and 2 FFs last year when Rivers went down, so we know he can replace him again. We also plan to use this top 30 OLB (PFF) as a nickel LB because of his excellent coverage skills and have no qualms with him replacing Rivers if he out-produces him.

LB – Stephen Nicholas ($1,500,000) – Battered with injuries last year, Nicholas still remained productive player for the Falcons, finishing with positive run-defending and pass-rush ratings according to PFF.

LB – Kirk Morrison ($300,000) – Morrison is no longer a start in this league, but his professionalism, ability to play inside and outside, and starting experience make him an ideal backup.

Secondary

CB – Asante Samuel ($8,400,000) – An elite corner who finished in the top 10 amongst corners in completion percentage allowed (47.5%) and QB Rating allowed (52.4).

SS – Dawan Landry ($4,125,000) – Was largely responsible for the Jaguars’ drastic defensive improvement last year, as he helped eliminate big plays down field while providing solid run support.

FS – Nate Allen ($540,000) – After a strong start to his rookie season (2009) Allen trailed off some with a knee injury and was not 100% to begin last year. He finished the year strong with a 7.2 PFF grade in the final seven games of the season. He was ranked the No. 15 FS overall and should only improve, as he is just 24.

CB – Derek Cox ($565,000) – Strong rookie year, bad sophomore campaign and then finally showed consistency in 2011, grading out as a solid No. 2 corner. Dealt with injury problems, but nothing too severe, meaning we expect him to build on his 2011 success.

NB – Drew Coleman ($350,000) – Ideal nickel back is quick and can consistently (1.8 cover rating) guard the slot.

Backups
CB – Terrance McGee ($1,500,000) – Hurt last year but was awesome in 2010 (5.9 cover rating by PFF). At $1.5 million, we feel he provides excellent depth as a boundary corner or NB. Should even push Cox for starting role. When he returned from injury mid-season, he really stepped up his game.

S – Jordan Babineaux ($650,000) – A late signing, Babineaux gives us a lot versatility. He logged 93 tackles and a pick last season, so he has starting ability. He’s ideally a SS, so could replace Landry if he gets hurt. Or, Landry could slide over to FS if Allen went down. Either way, we love or safety rotation.

CB/FS – Lito Sheppard ($300,000) – Sheppard hasn’t been the same since leaving Philly, but we reunite him with Andy Reid. Sheppard also returns to his hometown, so we’re hoping that rejuvenates him. He started seven games last year, so we feel comfortable with the depth he provides.

SS – Sean Jones ($300,000) – Struggled as a full-time starter in Tampa Bay but is a more than serviceable backup.

FS – Chris Prosinski ($300,000) – Very talented young player that dealt with injuries and a learning curve as a rookie.

Philosophy: We brought in Magini because he’s an excellent football mind and an experienced defensive coach. Maybe he’s not a HC, but he can maximize talent as a DC. We’ll run a abase 4-3 while also utilizing some 3-4 principles as well. Mel Tucker was a 3-4 guy when he came to Jacksonville a few years back and proved a good coordinator can master both defenses. Up front, Knighton will be our ‘plug’ and take on double-teams, enabling Osi to do damage as a pass rusher and Shepard to run free as sideline-to-sideline MLB. We love having Smith as a 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] down DE and will move him inside as a 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] down pass rusher, making room for explosive DEs like Sidbury, Hall and Chick. In our 3-4, we expect Knighton to be our NT, Smith and Alualu/Martin as our DEs. Shepard has 3-4 ILB experience and Smith has enough size to be a 3-4 ILB too. Sidbury, Osi and Chick are ideal pass-rush LBs in this formation. Rivers is a solid blitzer too. Our secondary very talented and capable of shutting down the pass in zone and man-to-man coverage, so we will use both quite a bit.

DL: Getting excellent depth, versatility and a plethora of pass rushers was the strategy here. Umenyiora gives us an elite DE to go with two up-and-coming DTs. Smith is one of the best run-stopping DEs in the NFL and can also slide inside to play DT in some situations. Martin adds excellent depth.

LB: Again, we wanted depth and got a ton of it. Sheppard was basically our second rounder this year and will man the middle for the next decade. Smith and Rivers form a nasty outside duo. If either has injuries, we have two proven starters in Nicholas and Howard. Howard will see the field a lot in passing situations.

DB: Samuel is an upgrade over Rashean Mathis and basically shuts down his side of the field. Cox doesn’t have much notoriety (surprise, he’s in Jacksonville) but was very good last year. McGee is regarded by some as a top 15 CB when he’s healthy and could push Cox. We hated to see Dwight Lowery go, but think Nate Allen has more potential in the long run. Our backups have a lot of starting experience and, once more time, provide excellent depth.

Special Teams
K – Josh Scobee ($2,251,200) – Spectacular 2011 campaign. 23-of-25 FGs (4 from 50+) and 62.9 TB percentage.

P – Nick Harris ($300,000) – Not a spectacular leg (42 YPP) but he’s consistent, which is all we really want out of our STs.

Overall

Just to sum up our goals:

1.) Bring in a proven quarterback to immediately upgrade the NFL’s worse passing attack: Check, getting Manning helps tremendously and allows Gabbert to learn behind him. Ideal situation.
2.) Hire a proficient offensive coach that could mold quarterbacks and run a well-balanced offense: Check, Reid is one of the NFL’s best at maximizing his QBs, young and old. He is a consistent winner, has a system in place that works and will use that to instill a winning culture in Jacksonville.
3.) Add a primary and secondary receiver: Check, Wayne and Floyd give us an excellent 1-2 punch.
4.) Keep a strong defense (ranked No. 6 in the NFL, which is amazing considering the No. 32 offense) intact while upgrading our defensive ends and overall depth: Check. We upgraded our defensive line and secondary while adding significant depth to our LBs.
5.) Finally, we wanted to turn the team into a contender while not completely mortgaging our long-term future: Check. Yes, we traded early draft picks but got some young, established players in return. Iupati is basically a first and Sheppard is a second. We obtained those guys as building blocks. There’s a lot more value in taking established 24-year-olds than there is drafting unproven 22-year-olds.
Basically, we feel we took over a team no one wanted, addressed every area of need and significantly upgraded our roster, adding depth everywhere while sprinkling in youth. There are very few flaws with this team and I think transforming a bottom dweller into a playoff team capable of making noise in the postseason is something to be proud of.

In Joe Philbin's new offense we plan to throw the ball, and spread it around when we do. The goal was to make this a dangerous passing offense and that's what we feel we have done. Josh Freeman now has Marques Colston, Kenny Britt, and Mike Williams to throw the ball to. When healthy, that is an extremely talented trio. While Britt missed significant time last year, we think Colston's injury issues are was overblown. He's played in at least 14 games, every year except for 2008. Add in one of the best TEs in the NFL in Kellen Winslow, and this offense should give defenses fits. Preston Parker and rookie Joe Adams are also nothing to sniff at as both are dangerous with the ball in their hands. The line has been given a slight face lift with Faine moving over to guard to allow veteran Todd McClure to take over at center. Former top 5 pick Jason Smith was added at RT. He has been a bit up and down, but we feel that with our coaching we can get that big time potential he once had out of him. Davin Joseph and Donald Penn, both two of the better players at their position in the NFL, return to anchor the line.

The defense had some holes last year and we feel that we've plugged them and built one of the better defenses in the league with a good mix of veterans and budding young players. Longtime elite veterans in Lance Briggs, Robert Mathis, and Rashean Mathis were brought in to mentor the future stars like Luke Kuechly, Janoris Jenkins, Gerald McCoy, and Daquan Bowers. Our main objective was to build a defense that could get after the passer, mainly with our front four, and allow us to drop 7 into coverage on most downs. On our front four, we have guys that are going to successfully rush the passer in Mathis, Bennett, McCoy, Ingram, Bowers, and Vernon. And our LB group led by Kuechly is going to make it tough to find room to throw the ball when we do. Our defensive backfield is a veteran unit led by guys that have been having success for a long time in Mathis, Trufant, and Hayden. Rookie Janoris Jenkins is going to see plenty of time as well and will be ready to take over when those guys decide to hang 'em up. We have a couple of young players ready to take the next step and start at safety in Tom Zbikowski and Ahmad Black although they will get competition from Hussain Abdullh and George Iloka. The player who might by the lynchpin to the entire defense though, might be Melvin Ingram, who we will use all over the field. He will play end, he will play WILL linebacker, and on some passing downs he will even play defensive tackle. His versatility is going to wreak havoc on the offenses we face and we can't wait to see it.

On Special Teams we have one of the best punters in the NFL in Michael Koenen and what we feel will in time be one of the best kickers in the NFL in Randy Bullock. In the return game, Preston Parker did a really nice job for us last year, but we think Joe Adams is going to beat him out. Adams was probably the best return man in the draft and is going to be a threat every time he touches the ball.

After free agency we didn't have a ton of needs, but our draft board was set according to value, but was influenced by positions that could help us. Kuechly, Ingram, and Jenkins were no-brainers for us. We think Kuechly is going to be a dominant MLB and team captain for us for a long time. He will immediately come in and anchor our linebacking corps. He really does it all. He's a tackling machine that is always around the ball and is excellent dropping in coverage. Ingram gives us two things we feel have become incredibly important in today's NFL, and that's pass rushing ability and versatility. He probably won't start for us immediately, but will probably play as many snaps as most of our starters as we will move him around from WILL LB, to DE, and even at times inside at DT where he played some in college. We felt he was excellent value at 23. Jenkins is a guy that had he been clean off the field would have been a top 10 pick. We feel those issues are behind him and he is ready to come in and be a professional. He has all the talent you look for in a corner and will immediately play for us whether it's starting or in sub packages. We like our talent at CB, but we do have some guys up there in age and Janoris will be ready to take the reigns from them eventually and lead our defensive secondary. Iloka is a guy that we feel is undervalued because he has yet to put it all together, but we think he has the talent to be a very good safety in the NFL with the right coaching. Joe Adams was one of our favorite players in the draft and is dangerous in so many ways, whether it's catching the football, running with the football, and maybe most of all, returning the football. He's an electric game breaker type that will come in and see time right away in our system. Harris and Ford are guys that give us some depth and we feel have nice upside. Thomas is a project QB who can come in and sit, learn, and develop. We thought he was worth taking a flyer on late. Vernon is someone who was hurt by poor coaching, injuries, and a suspension, but we think he has great talent. We thought about taking him in the mid rounds of the draft, but we had some other positions we needed to sure up first, but when he surprisingly went undrafted we felt we had to go get him. Bullock was our top rated kicker and we had a need, so we went out signed him pretty quickly after he went undrafted as well.

Our top objectives in free agency were to improve the pass game and improve the pass rush. As the Giants showed last year, that is where the NFL is going. You need to be able to throw the football to score points, and if you can rush the passer you can neutralize great passing games. Specifically, if you can get a good pass rush from your front 4 and allow yourself to drop 7, it is tough to move the ball for opposing offenses. With that goal in place our top two targets were the best WR available in Marques Colston and the best DE available in Robert Mathis. We created enough cap space that we weren't going to be outbid on either player. With our other moves we solidified our offensive line and our secondary as well as added depth in the offensive backfield. We also added a young QB who we feel has quite a bit of upside and a little bit of playing experience in Mike Kafka.

No matter where I've been, my philosophy has always been that no one is untouchable. I will trade any player as long as I feel I am making the team better. That was no different this year. Right off the bat we added perennial Pro Bowl OLB Lance Briggs to strengthen our weak LB corps. We trimmed some fat and added valuable draft picks. We then added a back that we were very high on last year when he came out of the draft in Kendall Hunter for a low price to add a speed dimension to compliment Blount in the backfield. Then after a late change in regime in Tennessee, we added possibly our biggest piece in WR Kenny Britt. We think you can't have enough good WRs and in Joe Philbin's system we like to spread the ball around. When healthy, we feel Kenny Britt is one of the brightest young WRs in the NFL and will become a force very quickly.

"Tradition Through Innovation"


This slogan typifies the approach we tried to take with the Cleveland Browns this offseason. It started with our coaching decisions, including hiring Rob Chudzinksi as a head coach and Mike McCoy as an offensive coordinator. It continued in our trades and personnel acquisitions, including trading for guys like Tim Tebow, Darren McFadden, and Larry Fitzgerald. In the draft we looked for guys who could make an impact for us, though we purposely went looking at smaller schools for players that most people hadn’t spent a lot of time scouting. Our goal was to put a balanced football team on the field. First and foremost, we focused on offense, looking to get explosive players that can put up points. On defense we had to give up a little bit, but we feel like we more than made up for those with our personnel moves. We expect the Browns to be an excitingly improved football team, though we anticipate that we are still at least a couple years away from being considered Super Bowl contenders.

Quarterbacks

Looking over the Cleveland Browns roster the Quarterback position stuck out like a sore thumb. Colt McCoy has been up and down in his short tenure, and while I liked Seneca Wallace he wasn’t the long term solution. Early on I knew I’d have to address the position, which is why I eventually traded for Tim Tebow. Tebow is a polarizing player, perhaps the most so in the league. Not satisfied there, I grabbed Nick Foles in the middle rounds of the draft. Foles showed potential as a Sophomore and a Junior, but had a particularly rocky end to his collegiate career. Still he’s got the size and leadership intangibles I’m looking for in a franchise QB.

Running Backs

Early on I decided that I would be looking to trade for a dynamic running back. I felt like I should be able to find a Top 5 back with one of my second round draft choices, eventually swinging a deal with the Oakland Raiders for Darren McFadden. McFadden, when healthy, is among the most exciting backs in the league. We feel like we can help offset that to some extent with a returning Brandon Jackson, who has shown promise in his NFL career but has struggled with health issues of his own. Joseph Addai comes aboard as a depth player looking to restart a once promising career, while Chris Ogbonnaya works in short yardage situations. Owen Marecic, one of my favorites from last year’s draft, will clear the way as a bruising fullback.

Wide Receiver

This was the one area that I really spent a lot of my focus. The Browns were simply abysmal last season, and a lot of that had to do with their Wide Receivers. I liked Greg Little, and I’ve always had a soft spot for Joshua Cribbs, but beyond that? Not much. We spent quite a bit of time here, trading for a guy who is arguably the best in the NFL (Larry Fitzgerald), arguably the best #2 in the NFL (Jordy Nelson), and then signing Kevin Walter to help man the slot. We also kept Cribbs, who will be used in all sorts of situations, and took a flyer on a returning Braylon Edwards, who returns to Cleveland looking to jump start his stalled career. Carlton Mitchell will continue to work as a 5th wide receiver for us.

Tight End

Ben Watson remains a solid option for us at Tight End, and Bear Pascoe was a late pickup for us that should fulfill a role for us as a #2. Dan Gronkowski will find time as a blocking TE / H-Back type player.

Offensive Line

Offensive line was another area that we knew we wanted to focus on. While Joe Thomas and Alex Mack are among the best at their respective positions, other players could be upgraded. Charlie Johnson, who struggled a little bit at LT, should be a natural fit at RT. Mike Briesel was brought in to start at one of the guard spots. Mike Pollak, Ramon Foster, and Tony Pashos (brought back on reduced salary) offer veteran depth and starting capability. We added two lineman through the draft; David Decastro, who will be plugged right in at guard, and Tom Compton, who could develop into a serviceable tackle for us down the road.

Defensive Line

Having traded both Athaya Rubin and Jabaal Sheard, I realized that the time was in dire need of some pass rush. Enter Elvis Dumervil. The former Bronco should wreak havoc for us in this scheme. Opposite Dumervil we’re going to be starting Wallace Gillberry, a player who was miscast the last couple of years in Kansas City’s 3-4. Kiante Tripp and Phil Taylor will occupy the inside spots, while Auston English, Letroy Guion, and Derek Wolfe will offer rotational depth and play making ability. It was important for us to have somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8 players capable of rotating in and making plays. We plan to really get after the QB, and it starts up front with these guys.

It’s a somewhat thin group of linebackers, but in the 4-3, it’s all about quality over quantity. While it’s true we plan to rotate our defensive linemen early and often, that’s not the case with our linebackers. Our three starters (D’Qwell Jackson, Jovan Belcher, and Demario Davis) are all capable of playing 3 downs. These men are versatile as well, as I believe each one is capable of playing any of the 3 linebacker spots. Ben Jacobs, Brian Smith, Kaluka Maiava, and Quinton Spears offer depth and insurance in the event of injury.

While it was tough to lose Joe Haden, we view Middleton as an ascending player who is more than capable of holding his own against the #1 WRs of the AFC North. Toler is coming over from Arizona, where he will be given an opportunity to claim the #2 job. Josh Norman and James Dockery will function as our nickel and dime CBs. At the safety spots, we’ve got the underrated TJ Ward returning and Ray Ventrone stepping in at FS, though don’t sleep on Christian Thompson, who could find himself starting by the end of the season.

We're running a Wide 9 / Cover 2 Press type defense. Had I known before the season started how en vogue this defense would be, I may have gone a different direction. However, with the proliferation of Spread concepts in the NFL I feel like this is the defense that will counter it. Running this defense means I won't be doing a lot of blitzing, intead relying on stunts and physical guile from my defensive line to get to the quarterback. That's why it was so important for me to get as many players as I could along the defensive line.

BUFFALO BILLS....from TP


My goals

1. Create the most menacing and disruptive front 7 in the NFL. I knew by trying to accomplish this goal it would mean I wouldn't be able to focus on making big offensive splashes.

2. Create an offense that was more balanced, with playmaking ability, one that forces a defense to protect every blade of grass and in turn open up space for my playmakers to operate. Elite talent isn't needed to accomplish this; all I needed was guys who compliment each other's skill set and maximizes each other's potential.

3. Have one of the top special teams units in the league.

Defensively, I wanted guys who were scheme versatile capable of executing a hybrid defense and changing the front without having to change personnel.
A) Calais Campbell represents a vital piece of the puzzle and is worthy of his lofty price tag b/c I needed a stud LDE with versatility, one who could dominate and free up Von Miller while allowing Dareus & Williams to maximize their scheme flexibility. In order for Miller to play that 4-3 SOLB role similar to his one in Denver, I needed a LDE who could do it all, and do it well. Calais will play 4-3 LDE in base and move inside during nickel and dime so that Miller can rush from the left end position. In 3-4 looks, Calias is obviously the LDE with either Dareus and Williams mixing it up at nose and RDE.

B) At defensive tackle, Dareus can line up at different spots along the line, and after doing some digging I found out that ProFootballFocus's 2010 DPOY, Kyle Williams, played the majority of his snaps at DT and DE despite being listed as the 3-4 NT. So these guys should be able to mix up odd and even fronts.

C) Von Miller. He should explode in this defense with studs along the dline commanding attention.

D) Connor Barwin was added b/c he's a playmaking who fits my necessary "scheme versatile" mold. On paper Houston is a 3-4, but IIRC the Texans frequently lined up in a 5-2 with Barwin and Reed essentially acting as defensive ends. With Calais, Marcel, and Kyle, Barwin and Miller can do the same in Buffalo, only with more effectiveness.

E) Patrick Willis -In order to bring this extra pressure, it's critical to add a middle linebacker who can handle the extra stress put on the position during these situations and help pick up the slack. What better guy exists for this stuff than Patrick Willis? So I spared no cost to bring him in.

F) Thomas Decoud. Bringing extra defensive pressure requires a free safety who can aid in run support which is why Decoud was my most coveted FS option in FA.

G)Defensive back: Tarrell Brown was great in San Fran's pressuring defense, and he's ascending as a player, so he's a welcome addition. Richard Marshall pairs with him for a solid 1-2. Justin Rogers & Buster Scrine have a lot of potential in nickel as Rogers is proving to be a possible late round draft gem. 2nd rounder Josh Robinson will make a viable back up on the perimeter. 2nd year SS, DaNorris Searcy, flashed starting ability during his limited 2011 time, so I saw no need to not let him jump into the lineup and continue developing on the field.



Offensively
Prior to Ryan Fitzpatrick's 4 cracked ribs in week 8 and prior to tons of injury along the Oline and a constant shuffling of mediocre WRs & TEs, Buffalo was actually putting up some points, so there should be no problem improving upon their initial 2011 success with the key additions I made:

A) Russell Okung. I addressed the LT position with the immensely talented high 1st rounder. That's an upgrade over the departed Bell. It took me a lot of maneuvering to make this acquisition (and the others as well). It was a painstaking effort to gradually build value through trades and repeated trades.

B) Jacoby Ford was added as the flanker b/c one of the greatest needs known to Bills' fans was the speedy deep threat who could open up the offense and draw some coverage away from Johnson. Ford's hand injury hurt him last year, but when he's on the field, he requires attention b/c even top corners like Flowers & Carr can't cover him 1 on 1 as evidence by their torching in Oakland's overtime win vs KC. Ford helps keep a defense more honest which is important in an offense that operates around Fitz getting the ball out of his hand quickly. In a zone blocking offense, Ford helps give Spiller some added running room, opens up receiving opportunities underneath and in the flats for Spiller, Greg Little, and Marcedes Lewis. What Ford does for the rest of the offense is well worth his 2nd round price tag. I'm sure the Raiders know this well. He also joins fellow Clemson Tiger, CJ Spiller, to form the NFL's fastest WR-RB tandem. These guys make eachother better.

C) Greg Little. Made an impact his rookie year despite missing his final season at UNC. The 2nd biggest piece of the offensive puzzle was the need for a big, physical go-to WR who could also score in the redzone. Little is an ideal slot receiver for this offense and a massive upgrade.

D) Marcedes Lewis. Lewis is a Pro Bowl caliber TE and a perfect compliment for a spread offense that needs a dual threat TE, one who can make plays in traffic, take advantage of mismatches, be a threat in the redzone (evidence by his 10 TDs in 2010) as well as act as an extra tackle in the ground game to help spring Spiller who's always a threat to break a run outside. (The 230 pound Little can also seal off blocks from his slot position.)

E) James Casey. Buffalo lacked a #2 TE so it was important to add a talented Hback like Casey who is still ascending in his Hback role. His effectiveness in Houston's zone blocking ground game and Foster & Tate's success is greatly welcomed.

F) Offensive Line. Prior to injury, Buffalo's oline was one of if not the best in the NFL last year, so it was extremely important to replace the loss of center, Eric Wood, with one of top zone blocking centers in the league, Scott Wells. The rest of the line is young and ascending, so there's no reason for this unit to not be one of the league's best.

Side note: At wide receiver I didn't feel the need to go overboard with 15 different #1 receivers which will ultimately do nothing but end in problems and conflict out of forcing a bunch of alpha players to split reps and pass attempts. Besides, in a spread offense like Buffalo, #1 receivers aren't needed all over the field as it's more important for the receivers to compliment each other and allow the offense to create and take advantage of mismatches. If Fitzpatrick's 4 cracked ribs and poor surrounding cast outside of Johnson & Spiller/Jackson could rack up 3850 passing yards and 24 passing TDs, then a healthy Fitzpatrick with Stevie Johnson, Jacoby Ford, Greg Little, Marcedes Lewis, and Spiller should be enough for 4000+ yards and 30+ TDs. That should be more than enough production to win a Super Bowl when the defense is busy sending QBs to the Emergency Room. lol.

Special Teams
Since games can be won or lost on special teams, it was important to ensure I had a solid kicker, punter, and long snapper, as well as the addition of both of ProFootballFocus's "Special Teams Pro-Bowlers", Cedric Peerman & Heath Farwell, with Farwell being one of the top special teamers in the league the past 5 years. Elite returners [Spiller, Ford, and Buster Skrine] will share kick and punt return duties.
