As someone who has an Xbox 360 (I've had a couple of the older PS's), but mainly games on my PC, what would you all recommend I get?
I love open world games. I like 1st person shooters. I love game like Final Fantasy and Resident Evil. I play Madden.

Wait for Scorpio

The FF12 remaster will only be on the Sony systems, if you'd like to play that one. Horizon Zero Dawn is absolutely fantastic, as a Sony exclusive open world title.
I dont do anything FPS, but there do seem to be more of those on the MS systems.
Do you have, or are you getting a 4k tv? if not, you can save money and not get the pro.danmarino likes this. -
Now, I came over to the PS4 after not owning a Sony system since the original Playstation (I went from that to a Dreamcast, then Xbox, then Xbox 360). I've loved catching up on a number of Sony exclusives that I never got to play. That has added a lot of value to my PS4.
Here is a link for an article on the PS4 exclusives for 2017 (though some will be on PC too):

If you are not in a hurry to buy, I would not be surprised to see the PS4 hit $199 this Holiday season or still $249 but bundled with a couple great games.Last edited: Apr 17, 2017danmarino and Unlucky 13 like this. -

I've heard the PSVR is fun, but most of the games are closer to cool tech demos than full games. The fact others can watch on the TV screen makes it more of a group thing though, versus just the person in the VR headset seeing anything.
The prices on the 4K TVs are dropping, my in-laws just got a 55" for $600. We paid $1000 back in 2009 for our 42" 1080P HDTV, but have been pretty happy with it. At some point in the next two years, we'll upgrade to 4K.danmarino likes this. -
The Xbox One shouldn't be considered at this point. Project Scorpio is launching in the fall and will have more power than PS4 Pro. However, most if not all MS exclusives are heading to the Windows Store any way. PS4 Pro has many exclusives that will never be on PC, so that's the one to get right now if any interest you. I have a base PS4 and it still does an admirable job on most games despite its power limitations.

I found this article to be interesting and dismaying at the same time. The essence is that the author feels that Sony is making many more traditional single player games while much of the industry focuses on online multiplayer, and that its a smart strategy to continue to attract gamers who are interested in those. As a Sony guy, I really hope that it continues, because I have zero interest in playing online.
I will say that Sony is not immune from this though. MLB The Show is a Sony exclusive, and the only AAA MLB game being made today, and they have gone full bore on the online aspects, greatly to the detriment of the single player franchise mode. To the point that I did not buy the title this year and will not.danmarino likes this. -
By "much of the industry" does the author mean "Microsoft"? Because Microsoft is about it. Sony's first and second parties still focus mainly on single player games, and most third parties are single player focused. Nintendo has never cared too much about online multiplayer, just offline multiplayer. The head of the Xbox division came out and said single player games offer diminishing returns.
Frankly, most video games don't need to be online.danmarino likes this. -
Many PC games are online/multiplayer now too, correct?

As long as my PS4 doesn't die, I'm just going to wait for the PS5. Although I have been surprised to see some 4K TVs on sale below $500 lately. By the time I eventually get one, something better will be out, lol.

I don't know if I mentioned this in another thread, but our old HDTV died recently and we went ahead and got a 50" Samsung 4K. The upgrade to 4K is more subtle than the leap from standard to HDTV, but once you see it..... :)
All the games, even on my standard PS4 look a bit sharper and the color is better too (the HDR I guess). We still need to get an actual 4K Blu-ray player too, so we have not seen anything in "true" 4K.
As for the switching of ecosystems? Yeah, if you are more into the online multi-player games, I think a switch [uh, changing consoles] is really tough. I am mostly into the single player stuff, so changing back to Playstation after two generations of Xbox was not real painful. I've really enjoyed catching up on things like the Uncharted games which I never played before, along with a nice selection of exclusive games. That said, I'd buy an Xbox or Switch in a heartbeat if they somehow got a new and exclusive 2K Football game! :)Last edited: Oct 6, 2017k-bayfinfan likes this. -
Have any of you actually started buying 4k movies? If so, is there that big of a difference? I'm not about to replace any of my Blurays like I did a lot of DVDs, but I might switch to buying new ones that way once I switch to the PS5.

I'll agree with that description of watching live actors with the 4K screen. We plan to buy an actual 4K Blu-ray player but not replace our regular Blu-ray collection -just buy the 4K version going forward.
