This is not a good draft for QBs. We may as well resign ourselves to not getting one this year unless we somehow manage to trade up.

 

Honestly, I just don't see us investing the #15 pick in a QB, unless Gabbert or Newton falls. Then, maybe. I think the due diligence this FO is putting in to looking at all the QB prospects is just that...due diligence. It could also be a case of smoke and mirrors since everyone in and around the NFL assumes we are drafting one. IMO, we will trade down out of the #15 spot (assuming of course we can find a suitable trade partner). Then, depending on where exactly we end up drafting in the first round, I think the emphasis will be on an interior OL, RB, DL or LB. Just a gut feeling.

As for drafting a QB, I wouldn't be surprised if we did draft one. But, I don't think it will before the third or fourth round at the earliest (unless someone on their board falls to a point where they feel he is the BPA).

If Gabbert, Newton, or Mallett is available at 15 you have to pull the trigger. Or they will regret it like those before them have regretted it and this franchise will always be mediocre until they step up and take a risk.

 

Draft Ingram at 15 to address the RB concerns and draft a late round QB. I'm not sold on any of the projected 1st round QBs. Hell, I think Ponder will be a better pro than the 3 listed above.

 

Your more likely to find a late round rb than qb.

You don't just pick a QB for the sake of picking a QB. If their guy(s) falls to them I doubt they hesitate picking him though.

 

I'm sorry but Mallet isnt an upgrade to henne, he is not a mobile qb tho better than Henne maybe but gets rattled easy with pressure up the middle. He flat out choked vs Ala and OSU at the end

It depends on your assessment of the QB prospects chances of becoming elite QBs. I only have Gabbert and Newton as worthy of a 1st round based on that. I think Ponder and Ckap merit a 2nd round selection based on their chances of becoming elite. I don't like Mallett's chances as I see him as a very likely bust. I think a guy like Yates has a small chance to be elite, but I think that chance merits no more than a 4th or 5th round selection. Obviously, any of the prospects in this draft might end up as elite QBs, but their odds of becoming elite are far from equal.

Something about Mallett has me intrigued. Like CK's report on him, the players seem to respect him. This draft talk really brings me back to when Marino was in the draft, a lot of parallels.

No I'm not saying Mallett will be Marino, but he is beginning to intrigue me more and more. To me its only him, Gabbert and Dalton (and I still like Devlin). I would not touch Cam with a 10 foot pole.

 

I disagree about Mallett. In no way shape or form is he a fit for this offense, its personnel, or its head coach. We ruin gunslingers, not make them better. lol.

 

CK did a good analysis that shows that Henne was not a gunslinger in college.

 

Mallett has the opposite affect on me. I see most of the positive reports (respect of team mates, etc.) as part of draft spin. I've been reading reports that say exactly the opposite his entire college career.

 

If people hate him so much, why are they saying the opposite now? How does that benefit them? At the very least you might hear from people things like "well he really is talented, but he wasn't much to talk to." Instead you hear people defending him left and right. Why lie about that kind of thing?

 

Its draft season, no means yes. If I'm a GM I'm saying great things about every player, except for the ones I want.

Right! At this point and time you're right! This teams needs to get to the point where they can afford to take a chance on a Qb now and then. To many holes to fill on the offense to take a Qb unless one falls in their laps that they really like.

If Miami had a sure fire Qb on the roster they could then afford to take a chance on another but not early on in the draft.

 

I agree with what your saying, but it also comes down to a GM/coaches belief in that player. If Ireland thinks Mallett or any other QB has that chance, than you take him.

I'm not sure, I would lean towards a RB or OL, but I'm really starting to like Mallet.

 

I "kind of" agree with you that its not a great qb draft but I think we can grab a Tyrod Taylor from VA Tech in the 2nd! He's a guy who can make all of the NFL throws, is fast, and more importantly is a winner (40-10 at Va Tech). Our first pick should be traded, moving down in the round to get Kendall hunter from Ok St, kid is a baller-fast, can block and broke most of Barry Sanders records at Ok St. Thoughts?

 

I think you can get him in the sixth and move him to WR. :)

I think we are so set around trading back that we will end up taking a somewhat lame offer to pick up a 2nd rounder. The only way I see us at 15 is if there are no offers to trade back. At 15 it's Ingram IMO.

 

Are you kidding? This whole time before the draft is about PR. Unless a prospect is an idiot then he's focusing on saying the right things. And in fact he's being coached on what to say and what not to say. You use your agent to call in favors and get as many positive stories as you can out there. And it works b/c people tend to have short memories. I've been reading blogs and articles for years about how arrogant he is and how his team mates can't stand him. Now you have to search hard just to find any mention of the drug rumors that have been rampant throughout his career. Mallett is doing a fantastic job of getting positive press out there. And if all you know about him is what you've read since the end of the season then you're seeing more positive than negative. The question is, which reports are a more accurate representation of the player you'll be getting?

 

Miami being that team makes a great deal of sense. We have a trading history with Dallas, Miami would love to take that QB that will appease the fans and Dallas reportedly wants a T and #15 would still give them their choice. My guess is that unless there's a player involved it would cost us our first next year.

People can't help themselves, they would talk bad about their mother if given a chance. Nobody is coming out now saying stuff against Mallet like Texan has said.

 

Not commenting on rafael especially, but there have been plenty of instances where teammates have given positive reviews of a teammate who had question marks going into the draft… and people here didn’t care.

 

That makes no sense. If I played a few seasons with Mallet and thought the guy was an all word douche I'm not going to start going around talking about how the guy is the best teammate ever, a solid leader, team captain, etc. When a GM asks me about Mallet I'm going to say "the guy can make some plays, but hes kind of an ***."

You seem biased against the guy, so you hear what you want to hear. That's fine - you are allowed to hold any opinion on any player you want.

But lets not pretend that a bevy of coaches and teammates are going to bat for Mallet when they have no reason to do so. Singing his praises won't get DJ drafted higher, nor would Petrino blatantly lying make it more likely that his players are drafted in the future (the exact opposite actually).

What does that mean in football? It means that that person played on winning TEAMS. lol....That's it. Now, of course that player can still be a good or even a great player, but it takes more than them playing on a great team for me to believe it.

 

I sure as hell hope not. That would be a HUGE mistake IMO. NE is stock piling draft picks like they're going of style. We simply cannot afford to trade away top draft picks on a high risk/reward prospects. Trade back or take the BPA. But, do not trade up.

 

It probably means the same thing as, "X factor"

 

And NE actually has a franchise QB. There is only one position worth trading up for to get and that is a possible franchise quarterback, especially if you don't have one.

What I would not do is trade up to get one of these guys. I'm not sold on any Qb being that sure fire pick...
