I mean, you ask how much of the Wilson failure was Wilson vs how much was a grossly dysfunctional franchise in the Jests. People saying he's terrible could well be right ... but also likely said the same exact things about Darnold.

As a backup, he's a guy that can potentially win some games and has a high ceiling. Compared to chuds like Tim Boyle it's a home run. Ultimately, if Tua misses a huge chunk of the season it probably doesn't matter who is in that spot.

 

Plus, if he's even decent, look how funny that would be and how mad the Jests and their trash fans would be. :chuckle::clap::crapstrom:

 

There's no evidence Wilson can even come close to "decent". He has a career 73.2 rating when league average is around 90. You mentioned Darnold, but keep in mind it's only one year Darnold did really well, and even if Darnold plays well from here on out it's the rare exception. You don't gamble on finding rare exceptions!

It's the Jets. Rodgers came in and nothing changed. The kid could use a reset and I'm optimistic he can turn things around with the right roster and coach. He has a very real chance of seeing the field too and we all know why. I'd much rather take a chance on Wilson than another QB plucked off the practice squad or another journeyman like Bridgwater. Now we don't have to waste a mid round pick on a project QB and can focus on more pressing needs.

 

It's a backup QB dude, you aren't bringing in Josh Allen here. You are either bringing in stiffs like Marcus Mariota, nobodys like Tim Boyle, rookie trash like Will Howard or risky but high upside guys like Wilson or Lance.

It it what it is. If Tua misses half the season again, it probably doesn't matter anyway.

I agree. I don't like the Wilson signing one bit, but it's true. We are dead in the water without Tua. I also agree that this shouldn't rule out drafting a quarterback in the mid rounds of the draft. There's going to be some names available. Dillon Gabriel, Will Howard, Riley Leonard.
Adding Wilson is a dart throw in my opinion. You hope to find some untapped potential or rejuvenation for his career, but you also don't necessarily want to be in a position where we have to find out.

 

I don't buy that. A good GM should prepare the team for situations where the starting QB goes down. Some SBs have been won by backups. Just having a "give up if your starting QB goes down" attitude is not the way to build a team.

Yes Philly went on a magic run with Foles. That's a massive exception. Losing your QB is generally a death sentence and that's just how it goes. The team won't give up and forfeit, but as fans we may as well face reality.

Big difference with Wilson is we're essentially guaranteed to lose if Tua goes down. It's like there was no attempt to even get a good backup QB. If Grier at least acted like he tried (i.e., not a career bust) maybe the probabilities are higher we can weather a hit to Tua. But with Wilson it's basically over if Tua goes down.

News flash cbrad. It's over with anyone not named Tua. You have watched this offense without Tua the last few years. It was barely functional. Career backups like Mariota or Minshew aren't going to change that. Bridgewater didn't change it. Thompson didn't change it. Huntley didn't change it.

If Tua goes down again, so do the Dolphins and so does Grier and McDaniel.

See what you have in Wilson. Maybe he can live up to his draft pedigree with a change of scenery. Payton wanted to resign him but gave him the courtesy to find a better situation.

And it's not just Foles. You know Brady and Warner were also backups who won SBs. Those two were selected late in the draft or were undrafted. You have to prepare, and sometimes you get lucky. And in many other cases backups hold the fort successfully until the starter comes back in. Can't expect that at all with Wilson. Again, you don't plan on finding the rare exception.

Minshew has been hot garbage outside of making his initial name in Jacksonville, though as a backup I wouldn't have panned it. It is what it is, the pickings are slim and the talent is all massively flawed. Nitpicking one flaw over another seems kind of pointless. Improve the rest of the team.

 

Last 3 years Minshew had 80+ ratings while Wilson averaged 73.2. I'm not saying Minshew is who we should have chosen. Just saying he's obviously better than Wilson who gives you NO confidence he can play well even as a backup.

Really bad move by Grier. Only way to redeem this is to draft a QB mid-round (or possibly sign another QB better than Wilson).

Now that we have Wilson as backup QB I totally agree with you. It's over without Tua.

A better GM would have put us in a situation where we are at least competitive without Tua. And a key part of making sure we're still competitive without Tua is NOT signing Wilson.

 

I don't think Grier sees it as Tua or bust. He probably sees Zach Wilson as a bargain signing capable of winning games for us which is why I don't like him.

Minshew, Mariota, Mac Jones, Heinicke, Wentz, Rudolph. You're not winning games with either of these guys!

 

I wouldn't be upset if we signed Minshew. I made that clear in the Minshew thread. However, I'd still want to draft a QB because he clearly isn't someone you can count on to win games (just obviously better than Wilson).

Personally, I'd draft a mid/low round QB every draft until the coaching staff thinks they have a viable backup that might actually make a good starter. Grier doesn't do that, which is part of the reason we're so unprepared.

 

I don't like the Wilson signing, but I also can't definitely say that my personal preferences are any better. Drew Lock, Mariotta, Winston, Wentz, and Taylor Heinicke were the names I liked.

 

Nobody was going to move the needle. Wilson doesn't move the needle. But, he's young and has potential. The he can throw the ball far guys should be very happy.

 

I think mariota couldve kept the dolphins afloat till tua returned last season.. we had huntley and skyler taking snaps… zach is better than both.. mariota is way better than both
