The point is that Tannehill is way better than anyone we've had since Marino, Pennington excluded. The hysterical thing is the guys screaming that he is no good and we need to go a different direction when it is clear the guy is playing well and still hasn't reached his peak.

How do we know he hasn't reached his peak? I'm not saying he has; I'm simply asking how we could possibly know either way.

As far as his "playing well," it's true he's playing much better than the QBs who are the worst in the league. However, he's in an offense with a low "degree of difficulty" (relatively few downfield pass attempts), and even then he's playing at about the middle of the road overall. He gets you at about an "Alex Smith" level, where you likely aren't getting anywhere big as a team unless you pull off the unlikely feat of surrounding him with one of the best, if not the best, supporting casts in the league. And as someone mentioned above, that's going to be more difficult to do as Tannehill begins to be paid more money.

Trent Dilfer won a Super bowl and he was a best a middling QB his entire career. I do not expect nor predict that Tannehill will be an "elite" Q, there are only about 6 maybe 7 of those types in the game, and the fact remains that when we had a Qb that was the very definition of an "elite" Qb we didn't win squat! That's why its a TEAM sport and it takes all the parts to win. Keep improving the O line, Keep improving the defense, get him some receivers that can catch the ball and he will win games for us and at least get us to the playoffs.

Tannehill is not the problem here.

Much more of a solution at QB going forward then Philbin is at HC. But then again we all ( some secretly) already know that.

The problem with that thinking is that there is no objective evidence that when those parts of the team play better, so does Tannehill. He isn't pressured more often than the average QB, he doesn't play better when he's sacked less, his receivers don't drop more passes than the average receiving corps, and the defense isn't worse than average and is better than average against the pass. So where this thinking that the team will somehow be significantly better when these other areas of the team "improve" comes from I have no idea.

I think it's equally as, if not more, likely that the team is good enough to get to the playoffs as-is, and Tannehill is currently the one holding it back. Obviously if that's the case, then making the rest of the team better will yield only better results, but again, that's less likely to happen as Tannehill himself begins to be paid more.

So then we dump Thill, who do you replace him with in this draft? There is only the guy from Oregon that looks like he has a shot. I'm an FSU fan but no way on Winston. So again, where do you find a Qb that is better than what Tannehill is RIGHT now? Off of another teams bench? We've tried that before in the past 14 years on more than one ocassion and it ain't worked out so well. It doesn't mean that they shouldn't look for a draft prospect, in fact I think they should find someone in the late rounds of the draft and replace Matt Moore. Maybe we'll get lucky like the Pats did and we'll turn a 5th round flier into a HOF'er.

Wow , do I ever disagree here. Just as a quick example do you honestly believe it was Tannehills fault we lost to Green Bay and Detroit ? Because if we won those games, actually if we won ONE of those games, we`d be in a much better position to make the playoffs. Late defensive collapses lost them both, not Tannehill. In fact tell me one game this year where Tannehill single handedly cost us a game.

Bottom line is I`m cautiously optimistic that Tannehill is the one. I saw nothing this year to lead me to believe that QB is a position we have to upgrade.

The team is scoring nearly 5 points more per game than last year. Perhaps if guys would catch some passes we would get more TD's and thus score more points. Williams yesterday for instance.

yeah but we have drafted OL the last 100 years it seems and the OL has not gotten much better. Granted the injuries could have a play in that this year. If you go with a stud WR you are wasting that pick too because Tannehill wont throw it there.

I believe any AVG QB should be able to complete the 6 yard routes that are thrown for 70% completion rate. Doesnt it drop to 50% anything over 20 yards.

I would bring in Mallett in that list. I would look at drafting someone else too; perhaps not a first round pick, but certainly a QB.

I would give all QB's a fair and equal shot to win the job.

I think all of us on here WANT Tannehill to be the stud and leader of the team, some just dont see it happening right now.

need better running back, need better OL, need better coaching, need better receivers, any QB would be better with all that stuff.

There are times in the same game I will think that was a great throw. Later i'll see him look lost and confused.

I say give him another year, but bring in all the QB's you can.

Tannehill is part of the solution, not problem. He didn't play well yesterday, and he's not elite yet, but the value is certainly there. Ask philly fans how they feel right now.

Tannehill had three dropped tds yesterday, not one. Three DEEP BALL tds. Get the **** out with this garbage about Tannehill. Maybe it should be apparent that the lack of downfield passing is not all Tannehill's fault, or even mostly his fault. Our receivers have been screwing him all season with drops.

**** off with this BS that Tannehill wouldn't throw to a stud receiver.

****ing stupid me for reading this guy's posts, even though I had him on ignore.

The trolling on here lately has me all torqued up. If the mods aren't going to do something about it, I may have to take a break from the site. I'm sure everyone cares. LOL

Hip, I think the biggest issue I have with all of your data, is that all you ever do is provide data that supports your belief that Tannehill is not adequate. Shouldn't you look at data from all sides to make a truly objective argument. Any time I've ever asked you to find data that might cast Tannehill in a good light. For instance, take a look at his steady improvement over every year, from 1-2-3. How does that kind of improvement compare to other QBs. If you truly rely on data to draw your conclusions, then you can't be blind to any data. You can't just arbitrarily ignore data that does not support your argument.

I think we have to keep him but I'm not sure about the best way to do it. Short term you can sign him to year 5, about $17 million from what I have read (average of top 5), or go ahead and get him into some heavily incentive loaded contract. He earns it I'm all for paying him.

What some need to realize is IF Tanny is given the BIG MONEY, it effects what pieces can be added after that because of the percentage of the cap he is taking. We aren't close enough to stop adding.

So you are advocating that we keep drafting QBs, hoping that we get ones that perform at least on the level Tannehill is at right now, and jettison then after their rookie contracts expire? Really, I don't see why it's so crazy to say that we need help on the offensive line. Realistically, that's the place to go to see if Tannehill can take the jump to hitting deep balls with more regularity. Shore up the oline with the draft/free agency, and get a nice receiver in the draft. I'm not even talking about superstars on the oline. I'm talking better than Colledge and Thomas. That shouldn't break the bank.

Maybe if you actively participated in anything besides a Tannehill argument you would be taken a little more seriously. Also, it's ok to be overly optimistic about a player...but nobody is going to respect a poster who hasn't shown the slightest ability to be objective. You are all about RT, it's kind of strange.

ill vouch for the hipster guy, I'm not a stat guy, but there is an increasing amount of folks that are and the numbers are growing exponentially in terms of their relevance to sports programs everywhere..I think its his angle, and I don't see any problem with him using the data as his defense, and in this case his offense.

Ok, I'll play. What SHOULD I participate in? Pretty much every thread lately is a one-sided slant about Tannehill. I'm sorry that you don't like it that I give a different perspective, and don't just take the stuff these guys are spewing. I can't help but notice you haven't taken any issues with barrage of anti-Tannehill stuff, but seem to have a pretty good hard-on for me.

  36. vt_dolfan

Sure.. But if you are going to rely on data, you can't pick and choose. You have to look at ALL relevant data. My issue is he just provides on set of data. Now personally, I actually watch the games, and I don't think it takes a mathematician to see how far Tannehill has come. I can also tell you there are probably a bunch of teams that would take 17 in a heart beat.
