Seen this at lunch thought I'd share it. Looks like we got a good value pick out of him.

Shoot, there's a chance Geno Smith could go in the top three. This draft sucks for QBs.

Actually I am not sure that he would be .It would depend on what kind of year he had.
Barkley was rated ahead of him last year and despite having an off year not entirely of his fault I think he may have challenged for that rating.
Marino had a bad senior year too.Its not a gauge of ultimate NFL success IMO.
Having said that I would rather take my chances on Tanny.:yes:Fin-Omenal likes this. -
This was first mentioned right after last years draft on these boards. I think it was taken into consideration when deciding to take him. It was a Tannehill/Weeden/Wilson vs. Barkely/Smith/Manuel option. With our inside knowledge of Tannehill, we were wise to pull the trigger.
Had he stayed....He would have most likely kept Manziel on the bench for a year..... and with all that talent around him, plus another year leading the offense..... I dont see how he couldnt be the top QB, and someone the chiefs would prefer over another position. Weren't they the team rumored to be hot on him if we passed ?Unlucky 13 likes this. -

""Here's how I'd put it: Between 11 and 50, there's a lot of good players. But they're very close between 11 and 50," Brandt said. "And I'd say if you took the 45th player in 2013, he'd be slightly better than the 45th player in 2012."
It's a sentiment shared by NFL Network's Mike Mayock and other draft analysts regarding this year's crop."
Consensus among the professional draft gurus seems to be that the top 10 is relatively weak, but it is a deep draft.
In other words it is a good draft to have multiple picks in round 2 and 3 instead of a top 5 pick. Last year it was the opposite. -
I remember last year several fans were wanting us to wait to get a quarterback until this year and then try to get Barkley. Barkley may still end up being a very good quarterback but it seems that Tannehill was a good decision by the front office at the time. We may have been wanting to trade up to get Tannehill if he came out this year instead of Barkley. Looks like Tannehill was also a very good alternative to Weeden for those of us who wanted Weeden instead.
-
Not to toot my own horn but I recall posting last year around draft time when fans were saying 8 was too high for Tannehill that it actually could be perceived as good value b/c he'd vie for the #1 overall pick in 2013 if he had an extra year of eligibility.

I find it interesting that it is believed by some people that Tannehill would be the first QB taken in this draft if he was in the 2013 draft instead of the 2012 draft. The reality is that Tannehill probably would not have even remained the starting QB if he had remained at Texas A&M.
With a new coaching staff in place and a superior QB, Johnny Manziel on the roster, Tannehill would probably have been used at his old WR position, if he had played for Texas A&M in 2012. The truth is that if Johnny Manziel could enter the 2013 draft, he would be the first QB taken and Tannehill would not even be a first round selection in that scenario. -
Tanny with Andy Reid would be deadly.

I think the truth is... we got a top 5 pick type of talent at the QB position... which is pretty exciting.Unlucky 13 likes this. -
Perhaps you missed the fact that Manziel was the Heisman trophy winner in 2012 and it is very unlikely Tannehill would have beat him out as the starting QB if he was still at Texas A&M. New coaching staffs usually want to develop their own players and as a returning senior QB for a team which was a major disappointment in 2011. I believe the new coaching staff would have gone with Manziel in 2012, even if Tannehill was still on the roster. -
Also i don't think they would have outright made Manziel their starting QB and thrown Tannehill into the WR group like you said. IMO you would have seen a similar set up like Florida had with Chris Leak and Tim Tebow, with perhaps Manziel having a more involved role than Tebow had that season.Unlucky 13 likes this. -
Stat wise, I would take Manziel's 2012 season over Tannehill's 2011 any day of the week. I think the A&M coaches would have determined their team was better off with Manziel in 2012 and Tannehill would have ended up as the teams 2nd string QB or back at WR. -
Tannehill would likely have transferred if it came down to it.

I have no idea if Manziel or Tannehill will end up having the better NFL career. I am happy with Tannehill as the Dolphins starter at this time. I just hope he shows vast improvement in 2013 over his rookie season. Time will tell how these two QB's develop in their pro careers, but as far as college QB's are concerned, I'll take Manziel over Tannehill. Of course Tebow was one of the best college QB's in history and as a pro, not much. -
Love the article, glad about it.
But why is it......that when the Dolphins finally have a bunch of draft picks...... the year's draft crop sucks. such bad luck. -
It should also be noted that Tannehill became the QB when he replaced a QB who was the starter the previous year and earlier in 2010 season. There is no reason to think that a player the caliber of Manziel couldn't have taken the starting job from Tannehill. Tannehill may end up being a better pro QB than Manziel, but at the college level, I'll take Manziel over Tannehill. -

Top 5 or 5th round- does it really matter? If TH had shown small potential this discussion would never take place. Lets be overjoyed that the kid looks like he can be an eventual pro-bowler and let's be hopeful/terrified that this regime can surround him with the necessary to near guarantee his growth.
-
The idea that Manziel will automatically be a good NFL QB because he won the heisman is nuts. I only watched a few games that he played last season, but a lot of highlights, and his game is ALL college. He's a scrambler and a playmaker, not a quarterback, at this point. That can work in the NCAA, but it catches up to you really quickly in the pros. I'll take Tannehill 8 days a week over that nonsense.

No one, especially me, stated that Manziel would be a better Pro QB than Tannehill. He may or may not end up being better, but that will be determined later. All my premise was is that Manziel is a better college QB than Tannehill and if the two of them played together at Texas A&M last year, I feel Manziel would have ended up being the starting QB for A&M.
During his last year as the starter for A&M, Tannehill had an up and down season and his team ended up having a very mediocre season. Manziel in his one season as a starter led his team to an 11-2 record, including the only win against Alabama by an opponent in the entire season. He also won the Heisman Trophy.
Tannehill may in fact end up being a much better professional QB than Manziel. This though does not mean that Tannehill would have been the first QB taken in the 2013 draft if he had played at A&M in 2012. Especially if Manziel was the starter and Tannehill was his backup or if Tannehill ended up playing WR again.
This thread was started because of the belief that Tannehill would be the first QB taken in this draft if he was coming out this year. I merely wanted to remind those who thought he would be the first pick that this was no guarantee, because I seriously doubt he would have started over Manziel in 2012 at A&M. If he didn't start this past year at A&M, I don't see him being selected as the top QB in this draft.
Obviously this is all conjecture and the two of them didn't play at A&M together in 2012, so we will never know for sure. We also don't know what type of year Tannehill would have had if he played at A&M this past season if he was the starter.
Last year Matt Barkley was thought to have been the QB who would have been drafted after Luck and RG3, if he had entered the draft. Now many experts don't even see him as the third best QB in this years weak QB draft.
At the professional level, I am happy with Tannehill. If both of them were playing for my Miami Hurricanes, give me Manziel, 8 days a week. -
Too bad this scouting staff didnt recognize the skills of one Ckap and Wilson, we could of easily had both. -
I like Russel Wilson a lot. He was my third favorite QB in the draft last year, and I would have taken him in the second round. I said as much on another board where Im a long time member. On the contrast to Griffin, I loved his game in college, and also loved what I saw in interviews from him. If he were two inches taller, he would have been a top five pick.
