It's been a persistent rumor... It could happen. I just hope we don't trade up from 5 to make it happen.

Bad idea. He's Tannehill 2.0.

According to the award committee, the Campbell Trophy is awarded to a "senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Herbert led the other eleven finalists in overall GPA with a 4.01 and will be finishing up his Science degree this term".Irishman, Two Tacos, Hooligan and 1 other person like this. -
I am not saying he will be great btw, more guys fail than succeed and hes obviously not a Peyton Manning generational type QB.
That said I can see him being similar to a Big Ben if he developed properly.
Big guy with a strong arm and good mobility for his size. Tough to sack and so forth.
Obviously whether or not a staff can develop his weaknesses will be his deciding factor IMO -
All that is meaningless when you're looking downfield for an open receiver during a safety blitz. Tannehill is incredibly smart, but that doesn't translate to the ability to think on your feet under pressure. And that's what I mean "from the neck up." How many sacks did Tannehill take in Miami when he should have thrown the ball away? The ability to figure out when you just need to get rid of the ball isn't something they teach in a classroom. -
100% Agree he took more than needed, but it got the point where every single sack was his fault to fans despite the fact that the pressure was coming from multiple angles not only from play to play, but often during the same plays.
He didnt hold onto the ball any longer than most QB in the league and his time from dropbacks to pass has always generally been good.
His issue is more when his team is trailing and he has to extend the play but cant find anyone. Those were his worst sacks.
I dont agree Herbert lacks poise though or has insurmountable pocket presence issues. -
-
That seems like making excuses for him. Sure, every QB takes sacks when there's unexpected pressure. This wasn't unexpected pressure, this was holding onto the ball for five or six seconds play after play when I had enough time to (and was) yelling at the screen at the time "Get rid of the damn ball!" He got tunnel vision and wasn't aware of the pressure. It wasn't just a few times, it was multiple times, usually in the same game when he faced defenses he wasn't ready for. And it didn't go away, it seemed to just get worse.djphinfan likes this. -
Why is giving reasons why something isn't true looked at as "making excuses?" I mean, just outright dismissing someones point of view simply because you disagree is what leads to arguments, instead of discussions. I think it's a fair point, that while Tannehill certainly took some he didn't have to, there were plenty that he took because he had no choice, but people were so down on Tannehill they blamed him for every sack and whined about his supposed poor pocket presence.

As i said in a previous post, if i were to draft a quarterback that i thought would have a career past 5 years... Herbert would be the pick... im just not sure if he is special...
He is having an excellent combine though and his pro day will only keep him locked in the top 5 -
i like burrow... and id take him if he were available but i also feel it is hit or miss with him. Either he is going to be very special in the NFL or he is going to be on that list with Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf... there wont be an inbetween with him.
herbert is the safest pick but im not sure he is special... like in the Brees/Brady/Rodgers category... he may be in the Tanne/Matt Ryan rank.. or a career backup..
tua i dont see it at all, im just going to say it, i dont like that he is left handed... i dont like that hes fragile and made of glass... and i think his surrounding talent made his stats look much better than he actually is.. mariota had similar stats with less talent in Oregon... -
The more I think about it, the more I am convinced about trading down from five. I am not sold on any of the top QBs this year. Burrow lacks arm strength, Tua lacks some arm strength as well and is a high injury risk, Herbert has the arm and size but he doesn not have experience in a pro style offense and his accuracy and football IQ is questionable.
I would much rather trade down from five for an extra 2nd, 3rd or 4th rounder then pick Jalen Hurts in the 2nd or 3rd.
Give Rosen one last shot to prove himself this year and if not Give hurts a chance or go after the top QB in next year's draft.Irishman likes this. -
Hurts is smaller, but even more athletic with a more accurate arm and better football IQ.
Love is being overrated because of his size and measurables, but Jalen is the better QB.
Fromm and Eason are good, but I think Hurts athleticism sets him apart from them. -
I have watched them play. Love wasn't impressive this year, but he was very good last year. Hurts looked good with Alabama, but who doesn't? With OU, he looked good against teams with no real defense and got exposed when he faced teams that had NFL-level players on their D. I don't want him, at all.Irishman and ripper1961 like this. -
I like Hurts and i wouldnt mind drafting him though he is not a week 1 starter.. maybe he isnt a year 1 starter.. which isnt a bad thing..
The one thing i noticed about his throws is that it floats a hlf second to a second too long in the air.. on some of the drills yesterday you always saw a slight pause from the receivers waiting for the ball to get to them. Whereas Herbert everything was being completed in stride. -
Absolutely no interest in second tier guys like Eason, Fromm or Hurts. Complete waste of a pick for a team with so many holes. Either take an elite prospect or don't.

The teams that target those guys should already have a decent base of talent and a need to work on a backup QB with a chance to supplant an aging starter, not a talent-devoid team in need of a high quality QB.Phin McCool and AGuyNamedAlex like this. -
Though if the team likes the player I would of course say take the QB. Do not just draft him to draft him.resnor likes this. -

In fact, he said in interviews that he wouldn't hesitate to change positions since he's a "team first player", so I really want this kid if he's available in later rounds.

I couldn't care less. Mike Mamula had a great pro day, too. -

Some people are saying Jake Fromm has dropped to a late 3rd, even early 4th round pick now based on the combine, but I don't buy it. I think some team is going to take a chance on him late first or early second.
