I love the fact he was a linebacker. He had to study a ton of opposing players when getting ready for Sunday. He had to watch RB's...QB's ...TE's..find tendencies. It seems like other then QB..a linebacker has to most responsibility on the field. I think its one of the reasons Ozzie Newsom is such a good evaluator of talent. To be Hall of Fame TE..he had to learn to block...run routes against DB's...LB's. Obviously this doesnt turn everyone into a great talent evaluator and an amazing GM. But when you put that...with all the other aspects needed to be a good GM..I cant see why this guy wouldnt be a great GM.
He's got a degree in Sociology.
He was a recruiter and Academic Coordinator for Duke. This is another thing I believe is a big plus. He can relate to younger players, as he worked with them at Duke.
Heres a pretty good article about Ray Farmer:
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/10/ray_farmer_cleveland_browns_nfl_draft_2014.html
"An unopened box with belongings from his last job in Kansas City sits on the floor. His desktop is tidy and organized. The walls in the dimly lit office are not festooned with pictures, paintings or artifacts from his NFL playing days. There’s a big-screen television and notes he’s scribbled on a dry-erase board on the wall facing his desk.
The Browns might give the new guy a day to settle in and decorate if he hadn’t been here since March 5.
“I don’t have a lot of time for stuff on the walls,” said the franchise’s assistant general manager. “My stuff on the walls are ideas.”
Browns CEO Joe Banner, who hired the 39-year-old executive he calls an “up-and-coming star in the league,” proffers another theory for Farmer’s lack of interior design.
“Maybe it’s because he’s always in the film room,” Banner said. “Ray’s work ethic is as good as anybody in the business, and I know a lot of hard workers. If he’d take a few hours off, maybe he could hang a few things on the walls.”
That’s not going to happen. There are too many reports to write, films to break down, free agents to analyze, people to meet.
Farmer can’t help resuscitate a losing team with an inspirational poster bearing Vince Lombardi’s likeness. He knows only one way, and it starts at 4:30 every morning in this corner office when he’s not on the road scouting or attending Browns games.
This weekend, Farmer joins the club on its trip to Kansas City, where he spent seven memorable seasons and one “awful, awful, awful” day with the Chiefs. He returns as a decision maker who has a say in every facet of football operations alongside Banner, general manager Michael Lombardi and coach Rob Chudzinski.
The Browns didn’t trade halfback Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick last month, Banner said, without Farmer’s input. (He favored making the deal.)" -

Agreed. Farmer high on list. RT @ArmandoSalguero: Sources tell me Dolphins leading candidate for job is Ray Farmer. -
Looks like Browns fans love him and don't want him to leave.

He joined the Chiefs in 2006 and three years later found himself under Pioli, who worked for the Browns, New York Jets and New England Patriots before being named Kansas City’s general manager in 2009.
What impressed Pioli was how quickly Farmer adjusted to the organization’s new direction and philosophies. He also liked his confidence and willingness to speak up and respectfully disagree with superiors. Pioli streamlined Farmer’s duties, which included scouting all players with pro experience in the NFL and Canadian Football League.
“I think he became the best Director of Pro Personnel in the league,” Pioli said. “Every year we gave him more responsibility. He never complained and never broke his loyalty to me or the organization. That’s rare in this business."
Doesnt sound to me like hes a yes man....ToddPhin, SICK and unluckyluciano like this. -
I'd kind of like it.

He also was very much in agreement to trading Trent Richardson for a 1st round pick (who wouldnt?)......still some people questioned it. I like the looks and sounds of this guy. Real hard worker. Detailed, 4:30 am watching film, taking notes. Former NFL LB.

The fact that Peterson promoted him from the scout level at Atlanta to the director level at Kansas City is a big deal and it shows how much Peterson likes him. The fact that Scott Pioli speaks extremely highly of him as well also impacts things as we know Pioli and Aponte are tight. One of the virtues that Pioli praises most in Farmer is his ability to get along with people, adapt to new directions under new leaders, and stay loyal. Yet Farmer is also lauded for speaking up and disagreeing when he disagrees. Calling him a people person isn't just a flippant remark.
Given those things, it's not surprising that league outsiders view Ray Farmer as the chalk leader heading into the interview process which I believe begins today.
On the other hand, his biggest weakness is the fact that he's had almost nothing to do with the NFL Draft until 2013 with the Cleveland Browns when they selected Barkevious Mingo in the 1st round, traded away their 2nd rounder, selected Leon McFadden in the 3rd round, Jamorris Slaughter in the 6th round, and then Armonty Bryant and Garrett Gilkey in the 7th round. It was kind of a bare draft and yet it was his only experience with the draft.
That's kind of a big deal since teams are largely regarded to be best built through the draft.

In your opinion how much difference is there scouting free agent players and draft prospects?
Obviously there are some differences but I would believe some things carry over.
Is it just me, or is "Farmer" the perfect name for a GM?

Hiring someone from the Browns to run the team? I can honestly can say that puts a smile on my face.
That does not fill me with confidence.
Noone cares what you think. Now please let me have the number of your primary care taker so I can let them know their "special" little boy escaped again.

Hey hey....we better watch out. They have Geno Smith. They are set up for the next decade.

He does come across as extremely well spoken...also can tell he will have a good repoir with the players on the team.
"Age, Injury, Character"
Dont want to add old, oft injured players with character concerns
I can see him really working well with the College Scouting guys....

Lol....
I cant talk down Geno, as he's an Ex Mountaineer.
Ken Dorsey was a Cane....I love him, but he sure wasn't an NFL QB.
You can like Geno and say he isn't a franchise QB.
Farmer may or may not be a great GM-in-waiting, and to be honest I have no idea but, and I know it means nothing as a GM.....at least he's an ex-football player, and LOOKS like an ex-football player, ie. the polar opposite of Ireland
