Boss Ross, a man keen on half measures the past couple of times he has changed the team’s leadership, outdid himself with a, well, a one-third measure.
He should have either stayed the course or handed the whole package to Tannenbaum and told him to remake it all. But not knowing which was right, Ross only made a national mockery of the Dolphins at a time all seemed relatively quiet.
And with that, it is close to being official now ... Stephen Ross is competing for the worst franchise owner in South Florida today.
He has never been the best because his team has never been to the playoffs or even had a winning season under his ownership tenure. But he was never the worst because that ignominy went to Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.
Ross is now worse than Loria.
Loria is terrible but he is diabolically so, allowing lies to be spewed before city fathers for his ultimate benefit.
Ross is just inept.
And that is worse.

I can't wait till the draft begins, I seriously am tired of reading about the clowns in our front office, it's depressing.

I think Armando is pretty spot on. The hiring of Mike Tannenbaum is being perceived as bad because of his time in NY. While the results were mixed, the role he has now isn't the same. Given his interest in analytics, his hiring may be a good thing for us. And I think people are seeing this move as short sighted. Ross is funding a stadium rebuild and likely didn't want to pay to fire an entire staff and rehire a new one. Joe Philbin and Dennis Hickey are not likely to survive into 2016.
Someone remind me, what position did Ross want to promote Jeff Ireland to before parting ways? Was it VP of football operations? I think its likely that Tannenbaum will take on an Ireland/Peterson role and help hire a new coach and GM in 2016. Which may not be a bad thing tbh. I certainly don't trust Ross to find us a new coach by himself and I'm perplexed as to what Dan Marino actually does. His job description is probably, "be Dan Marino."
Ross is clearly a ****ing ******, our organizational structure makes no sense, the GM candidate search last year was a joke. I'm just going to sit back and hope for the best. There's nothing else to be done.ASOT and Pandarilla like this. -

I'm not a big fan of Ross and certainly not of Tannenbaum, I hope it works out...he's not on the same level as Loria. I mean Ross is in his own sad way trying to win, Loria blatantly deceived the city to get a new stadium, thats a pretty hard act to overtake.

Loria is a cartoon villain honestly. Ross is the deuteragonist who always means well but can't help but **** up.

This just in... Salgeuro is an inept writer.
**** that guy. He's useless.
The only thing I agree with, is the fact it's a half measure by Ross. The move, to me at least, signifies that he's "not happy" with the Hickey/Ireland combo, and wants someone with football experience to manage that eventual transition, or decision making on their future. At least if that's the route he goes next year... he's got someone with some experience, and respect in the league to handle his GM/Coaching search.
The thing that bothers me... He's had Tannenbaum on payroll as a consultant throughout the year... Why not hire him in this role as the season was falling apart, then let him decide the fate of Hickey/Philbin this year, with some good coaching candidates out there.Piston Honda likes this. -
I think Armando Salguero is off on this.
This is a re-do of the GM hire but with a small twist. I don't know that Ross trusts Mike Tannenbaum to be the guy making personnel choices. So technically Hickey is the GM and has final say on the 53 man roster. But Hickey is absolutely in over his head as far as structuring and running the engine of a billion dollar franchise. He's got no clue what he's doing as far as analytics go, sports science, implementation of technology, etc. He's pure old school, and not in the "I like that!" way. He's just insufficient.
Tannenbaum has more experience designing and handling the structure of an organization. Especially over the last two years he's had exposure to how the Seahawks structure their organization (probably the most innovative franchise in the NFL by the way), some other NFL franchises, some NBA franchises, the English Premier League, etc. That's been his business, finding all of the innovative things that all of these teams are doing and incorporating those innovations into his business. You don't get that if you're holed up in your one NFL city looking out purely for the franchise for which you work.
Thirty seconds of listening to Tannenbaum is all it takes to know the guy has WAY more knowledge of what he's doing than Hickey does with respect to the incorporation of analytics, sports science, sports performance and development, nutrition, etc.
The only reason Philbin doesn't report to Tannenbaum right now is Philbin is still operating on the contract signed in 2012, which stipulated that he answers only to Steve Ross. If Joe Philbin were to pull off a miracle and win a bunch of games next year to where he's getting a contract extension, that contract will very likely have it written in that he now answers to Mike Tannenbaum.
We've been BEGGING for Ross to install a head of football ops that oversees all of the department heads. Begging for it. Now it happens and this evidence that Steve Ross is a buffoon?MAFishFan, NJFINSFAN1, dirtywhiteboy and 9 others like this. -

If you think Ross is an idiot, then you have to love this move because he just removed himself from half the equation.Pandarilla, shamegame13, PhinsRDbest and 2 others like this. -
I can't really bash Armando, he knows the mood of the fan base so he's tapping into their frustration. Wholly transparent yet effective. At the same time I wish we had beat writers who were more interested in informing the public than just telling them what they want to hear.

I'm not going to defend Ross, but anyone who thinks that he's a worse owner than Loria really doesn't know the history of the Marlins. -
So yeah, we associate him with the Jets. And with getting fired from them. And the mistakes he made there as GM. And etc.
But you present some good positives to weigh this out.
Also though, I din't have any faith in Ross' football decisions to be sound. So I almost assume the worst but hope for the best at this point.Clark Kent likes this. -

I think Armando's issue is if you're gonna go this way then go all the way and let Tannenbaum hire his own guys instead of forcing a group of lame ducks on him.
-
Again, the decision to hire Tannenbaum isn't the real issue. At least, not among those of us who don't think the guy is a buffoon because his resume includes being GM of the NYJ. The issue is the power structure is more convoluted than it was yesterday. Tannenbaum is stuck babysitting Ross's mess instead of beginning the process of cleaning it up.ASOT, schmolioot and gunn34 like this. -
I was worried about this because I think Tannebaum is a terrible GM.
Hopefully in the two years he was away he got to reflect and grow and realize that he should not scout or make player acquisition decisions and this could work.
I disagree that the power structure is more convoluted. Philbin reported to Ross yesterday. -
If Philbin and/or Hickey are removed in 2016, I think the presence of Tannenbaum will be an asset for the Dolphins in terms of hiring. Tannenbaum seems to have an ability to sell and project himself and his vision that many don't (including Ross). In the meantime, Tannenbaum can work with Hickey on the sports science and scouting side of things. I can see good things in that: a stronger push towards nutrition, conditioning, recovery, etc. I don't think this move makes the team worse in any way but it certainly makes the franchise more prepared in the event that it enters a complete rebuild in 2016.
The only question for some may be 'why aren't we just rebuilding now?' I think the answer to that remains the same. Harbaugh wasn't coming and Ross was satisfied to let Philbin and Hickey run the team in 2016. With that being the case, I give this move a passing grade. Maybe it's not an A+ for some of you but it's another gradual step away from ineptitude which is by definition an improvement. -

Let me ask you this... Miami goes 6-10 next year. Is Ross firing/letting Philbin, Hickey, and the staff walk? Probably, yes. Is he going to fire Tannenbaum after one season as VP? Probably not. That would be dumb... Ross is taking a half measured approach to improve this **** show he's created instead of cleaning house and building a new staff from the top down. -
its not all bad man, oh yeah, and go over to that stadium modernization thread, it will surely cheer ya up, its kind of a big deal for a team that plays in the worst venue in sports for a home field advantage..their movig and adding concrete brother..with a roof and everything, its all good. -

When I lived in South Florida I thought Loria was the worst owner in professional sports. Yet I never blamed him for the stadium. While he certainly lied, it was the corrupt politicians in Miami-Dade county who failed to perform their due diligence in requiring Loria to submit his financial records prior to approving the stadium.
Instead these politicians merely accepted Loria's word that the Marlins were losing millions of dollars a year and therefore could not afford to put more money into building the stadium. I actually give Loria credit for understanding how inept and corrupt the politicians are in Miami Dade county. -

Man you guys will buy into anything the dolphins do. This is a horrendous hire and honestly makes no sense considering Philbins current contract. This guy sunk the jets into a black hole. Well on the bright side maybe he sinks us into the same hole and ross sells the team. All I'll say is this clown thought TIM TEBOW would be the savior.

I don't really know tannenbaum that well. Clearly he's quite divisive. The jets connection doesn't half. As CK said this appears only to be a good move whichever way you slice it. It seems ridiculous to complain that he left the jets in a mess, was he in any way responsible for 2 championship game visits? We can't have it both ways, can't moan that he didn't do a good job without pointing to the good work he did do. This idea the Ross is the worst owner in sports is beyond ridiculous. What these posters should really say is they disagree with his way of doing something, although from a point of view of less information and with more conjecture. Thus jumping on the spoiled brat machine if you don't like it, get fantastically wealthy and buy your own pro sports team.
