The Steelers have some big decisions to make at quarterback for 2025. On Tuesday, they made one that will be far less consequential than others.
Skylar Thompson signed a futures contract with the team. His agency announced the move this afternoon.
It makes him part of the 90-man offseason roster. Which is more than what the current quarterbacks on the rosters will be, unless they re-sign. Each one — Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen — will become a free agent in March.
Last year, the Steelers moved on from Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph, hitting the full reset button at the most important position on the team.
Time will tell whether the Steelers clean house again, or whether one or more will stick around after his first season in Pittsburgh.
Thompson, 27, was a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2022. He has 10 regular-season appearances, three regular-season starts, and one playoff start, from 2022 at Buffalo.

That’s good - it takes the decision out of Grier and McD’s hands, since they had some bizarre love for the guy.

Very loose definition of epic there, T4L.
PS. It certainly couldn’t be to pick his brain about the Dolphins’ playbook, so this move is definitely puzzlingTuanon4Life likes this. -

Maybe we can bring in Fields lol. Steelers don't seem to know what to do at QB.

He will get cut during training camp. Somehow get back on our practice squad and wind up starting a game next year.

Imagine if all of a sudden he turned into a good QB? I think I'd give up watching football. Hahahaha

I actually like Baker Mayfield. I think he’s a good quarterback, I think he's one of those guys that finds a way to win in this league. It damn sure wasn't his fault that TB took the loss Monday night. He took the Browns to the playoffs, he's had the Bucs in the playoffs the last two seasons. Not a hall of fame guy, but he's good enough to win with, especially if you have a good offensive line and defense backing him.
Darnold was a big mystery. He was a prodigy coming out of high school. I'm glad he found a home in Minnesota. If not there, he'll get a job as a starter somewhere else.
As for Thompson....I wish him well. I never want to see him in aqua again though. Can't believe people actually suggested that he was the best option for this team.resnor likes this. -

I liked Skylar and saw a lot of potential in him his rookie season. Sadly though, he didn’t grow into a viable, reliable backup.
Wish him well and who knows, like Darnold, perhaps a different offensive system will play to his strengths and he’ll have a successful career…just so long as it’s not against Miami.dolphin25 and Tuanon4Life like this. -
