Let's face it, nobody is moving the meter right now. We just have to get lucky w/ a Mike Smith type or something. Bottom line, no matter who we hire now, we won't be excited about it for some time, if ever. Coach will have to prove it.

Frankly, that's how it should be. We should know better post-Johnson and Saban to trust a big name.

 

You're right on, of course, it just sucks that we lost Fisher the way we did .... even if it ends up being a good thing for us. Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky here, we could sure use some Luck!

 

Hire Philbin, sign Flynn, Draft Upshaw in round 1 and Broyles in round 2.

Can't think of a better foundation for the off season given what is out there.

 

Overall my gut tells me it's good Fisher went elsewhere.

That does leave us with a bigger gamble to make.... which is searching for the next talented HC that hasn't bee found yet.
Possible Home Run opportunity but also a complete Dud opportunity which Fisher would not have been a risk of.

I hope they REALLY dig down deep and beat the bushes here.
I'm happy with Zimmer coming in and I'm happy to see Chudzinski in the list.
Not excited about Philbin at all.
I'd also like to see us bring in Jay Gruden to see where he is.
The guy has HC experience, while in other leagues, still he's filled the role of HC along with being a good Coord.

I'm torn on the Chip Kelly stuff.

 

Not sure I agree with your draft but Philbin and Flynn would be on the top of my priority list.

 

You have to wonder when Philbin will be ready to even think about this again. Obviously, he'll want to move on and pour himself into work so he can get it off his mind, but I can't imagine it's going to be soon.

 

I don't know a ton about Philbin other than that he's a non-play calling OC (which makes me nervous) and his son died. I sort of consider him a wild card.

 

Why?

Both those hires were fantastic.
The only reason they failed were because of crazy circumstances none of which were about whether either was a good coach or not.
I think they've both proven to be top coaches.
Not seeing the lesson you're asserting we should have learned.

Saban never proved to be a good coach in the NFL only in college. That was not a fantastic hire...he was a failure.

I liked the Johnson hire but he had nothing to prove when he was hired.

 

Johnson was not a good coach by the time he got here. Good GM, sure. Good coach, no. He was coasting. It would have actually been much better for him to GM and bring in his boy Wannstedt to coach. That would have solved weaknesses of each man strangely enough.

Saban proves out the point whether or not you believe he was a good NFL coach (and I don't think he was). It's not just about getting a name. It's about the person working FOR THE DOLPHINS. Saban's hiring and subsequent championships at Alabama don't do the Miami Dolphins a damned bit of good. Give me a coach who isn't a name, who isn't a genius, who isn't even the best choice on paper, as long as he will WIN US SOME ****ING GAMES.

Based on coaching abilities and the information this organization had at the time and not having a crystal ball to predict Saban missing college ball the hire was in fact a no brainer.
Saban was well regarded as an NFL success in waiting. His coaching ability is unquestioned. No one knew he'd melt down and miss the college experience.
It was a fantastic hire at the time.

Didn't work out but in no way can you say the organization made a stupid decision with that hire.

Jimmy Johnson had a life changing experience after his dad died that made him question why he spent all the time he does grinding away as a HC in the NFL. Again, good coach, good hire, just failed due to unforseen and weird circumstances.

 

They should consider Marty Schottenheimer. Seems like he would be compatible with Ireland. Never seen him below .500. If you're gonna play dinosaur football, you might as well get the king.

 

I'm not saying it was a stupid decision (that was Cam). I'm saying that with benefit of hindsight, fans shouldn't be thinking just because it's a name or somebody who is supposed to be good that the person should be trusted before he has proven himself. That was my premise.

 

Whether a coach has a name or not isn't the issue.
If he's a good coach that is well known then it would be a good hire.
Success can come from either side. New up and coming coach or a tenured successful coach.
The key isn't ignoring known and talented coaches for unknown ones.

I said I don't necessarily want a genius. That is, I'm not worried about the Dolphins hiring somebody regarded as a genius. I want for once a solid coach who wins. Billick was regarded widely as a genius. He worked out for the Ravens in that he brought them a title. That's great. Rick Pitino was widely regarded as a genius in basketball, and he didn't work out at all for the Celtics.

Yes, I want a smart coach. I'd still take the dumbest head coach in the NFL if it meant winning.

 

U still can't say it was a fantastic hire. What makes it fantastic? that he failed as a coach and GM? That he lost the respect of the team when he walked over a player that had collapsed because of the heat and he didn't know what to do about it? What was fantastic? he failed.....u could say it was a "good try" of a hire because he is/was a successful college coach. But in no way was it fantastic...turned out really not so good I think others here would agree.

That just means some reporter wanted to use the word architect, not that he is in fact the architect of that offense.

 

Agreed. I did say, "so who knows"...I'm sure he has plenty of input on the offense. It's a risk like anything else.

 

I'll be fine with anybody as long as it salvages as much continuity as possible. I think everybody is comfortable with the creativity on offense from Daboll and wants to continue to see the defense grow.

College football is just too different outside the base X's and O's. It makes me very wary of hiring anyone. The players, the environment, the media - everything is different between the college and pro levels and is why a coach can experience good success in one and not the other (IE: Saban).

Unless you have a Harbough type who had firm NFL roots and was not mostly/solely a college level guy, I would pass on them at a HC level. Offensive coordinator? Absolutely yes, but I don't think Chip Kelley would come to the NFL for that.

At this point, Zimmer seems like a solid choice. with maybe keeping Daboll at OC. His offense did seem to do quite well as the season wore on. Aside from Zimmer, I would like to see where Jay Gruden is at - some people say it's to early for him, but lots of people said the same about Tomlin as well.

 

Problem with daboll is he hasn't helped improve our redzone efficiency enough.
