can you not set it up with the MAC address? I'm sure you tried it since your a savvy guy, but it's weird that it works just by opening up the WEP...

ooo I had a same problem. Though i had a neighbor stealing my net :no: So I had to have my ps3 offline until I got a new router. Now it works perfect.

put in the WPA code Mor. That's how I get mine online. And could you have logged on/off any more tonight?

wep, from what i hear, can be cracked in like 2 mins

wpa is what i use and my ps3 wouldn't connect to it either...i was lucky and could hardwire though

...in the future i may put the ps3 in the living room and at that time i will need to think of something to get it working...prolly get a new router, as i need one anyways...

I would recommend buying an older used wireless router from ebay. Then load DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php) open source firmware on it and turn it into a wireless bridge. That way it connects to your original wireless router and gives you a wired connection near your consoles. This is how I currently have my consoles setup for net access. Makes it much easier since I only have to worry about configuring the bridge and not each console individually since they are connected with CAT5 at that point.

Just make sure you look over the supported hardware list at DD-WRT and find yourself a cheap supported router. You might want to look at loading DD-WRT on your original router too, because it supports a lot more configurations than some of the OEM firmwares.

i was going to go with a new linksys and tomato firmware

thats a great idea about the bridge though

i have a linksys wireless 54. out of the box, i set up wpa, put the key in the ps3 and never had a problem since. i had a dlink before and it was horrid. mostly had problems with the xbox not he ps3.

Using WPA is more secure than WEP. However, some devices such as PDA's and DS's can only connect using WEP.

If you have to use an open and unsecure connection:

-Limit the DHCP pool to the number of devices on your network
-Hide your SSID
-Use MAC filters

This will keep most people off your router. If someone with some networking knowledge and Google wants in your network, they will get in whether you are using WEP or WPA.
