In Todd McShay’s latest mock draft on ESPN.com, he has the Dolphins passing up UF cornerback Vernon Hargreaves to take UCLA linebacker Myles Jack at No. 8.
“Jack, who is still recovering from an early-season knee injury, didn't participate in drills at the combine,” McShay said. “But his tape shows a twitched-up athlete who thrives in coverage and can make plays all over the field versus the run. If the Dolphins are looking to add a much-needed playmaker to the second level, Jack is their best bet.”
The seven players McShay has going before Jack: Mississippi offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil; North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz; defensive ends DeForest Buckner (Oregon) and Joey Bosa (Ohio State); FSU DB Jalen Ramsey; Notre Dame offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley and Cal QB Jared Goff. His picks 9 through 11: Hargreaves, Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott and Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson.
Rishard Matthews agrees with Greg Jennings that too many restrictions have been placed on Ryan Tannehill.
“When coach [Bill] Lazor was there, [Tannehill] really didn't have the flexibility he wanted,” Matthews told WQAM’s Joe Rose and Curtis Stevenson. “I don't know where the confusion was. I love coach Lazor and at times we were wondering why are plays [not] being audibled. I hope he gets that freedom in this new offense. Our second year, he had a lot of freedom.
“The staff now, they trust him, from what I'm hearing. I spoke to Ryan, and he's excited, too.”
Interesting that when asked about the problems with the offense, Matthews blamed not only consistency but also “creativity.”

I wouldn't mind Jack, I just don't like drafting injured guys, but he could be special.

Myself I do not like counting on rookies, so drafting an injured guy does help keep expectations low, while giving the Dolphins a chance to draft a guy who would probably have zero chances of being available at 8 if he wasn't hurt. -

I think McShay's reasoning is spot on in this case, we need a playmaker at the 2nd level badly. We need a guy that can make big plays and disrupt the game, if Jack's healthy when the season starts he could be that guy. Getting a really good CB isn't a bad way to go either.

Drop and give me Fuller, Vadaal Alexander and Karl Joseph...
jusr kidding, take Jack if he's there... -
Even though Matthews said they were confused as to why he wasn't allowed to audible.
You should stop calling what Tannehill was allowed to do "audibling." When people say "audible" they are not referring to what Lazor allowed Tannehill to do.
"I hope he gets that freedom in this new offense." Then he references Tannehill's second year, the last time he could actually audible, and the freedom Tannehill had.Fin D likes this. -

Yes. He clearly says they wondered why plays weren't being audibled, and further elaborated that he hopes Tannehill had the freedom to audible in this new system, like he did his second year.
Unless he's referring to Lazor's second year. But, when he says "our second year," I took that to mean 2013, the second year of both Tannehill and Matthews.
I could be wrong, but that seems to make the most sense. -
I pointed out that Campbell wasn't lying. Campbell said he could audible under Sherman. That's Tanny's 2nd year. In Tanny's 3rd year Philbin and Lazor decided they didn't want him to audible anymore. All I said was, Rishard verified what Campbell said. Nothing more nothing less, and you jump into a defense of Tannehill? Dude, something's really got ahold you man.dolphin25 likes this. -
Yeah, sorry. Was having a bit of a rough day. Read more into than I should have.
Sidenote, though, no one has claimed Campbell was lying about that. Also, are you admitting with that statement that Tannehill couldn't audible? You have been arguing for awhile that Tannehill could audible. -
I can't stomach passing on a starting caliber CB or DE to take a WLB. Good corners and pass rushers are too hard to come by, turning one down to take a guy at a less impactful position, a position that's already filled by a decent young player, seems ill advised IMO.
-
Of course I wouldn't be down on taking a CB with our first either. We were terrible there too.resnor likes this. -
Put it this way, audibling is like you're given a steak dinner but you can order a completely different meal off the menu. Tanny wasn't allowed that. What he was allowed was a price fixe menu, and from that he could choose from X amount of dishes for each course. But he couldn't go to the a la carte menu. This is what Lazor discussed. He changed plays under Lazor. But he wasn't allowed to call a completely different play. -
Except Matthews is saying Tannehill didn't have freedom, and he's hoping he'll get back to having freedom like he did in his second year.

I love him as player, my question is whether the Dolphins can afford to not take a DE or CB with an 8th overall. Grimes is the only reliable CB and he's old. Vernon may or may not be on the team. Wake is 34 and coming off an Achilles as a guy, like Grimes, who relies on quickness. These are not positions that can typically be filled thru mid round picks or FA. IMHO a chance to get a cheap, quality starter at DE or CB trumps adding a LB, perhaps not in general, but for the Dolphins specifically I'd say that's the case. -
the name of the GM game is to amass talent..to try and find the extraordinary..Jack is every bit of that..Shane Falco and jim1 like this. -

"I agree on the run defense. I'm just not sure that adding a 6'0 230 LB will make the front 7 any better in that area. When I see Jack he looks like a terrific pass defender who will be average vs the run at WLB and perhaps below average in the middle or playing strong side. I could be wrong there but how many guys Jack's size play the middle in the the NFL? I think it would hurt his productivity and shorten his career. And again, with Jenkins and Jack at LB what are the chances that the run defense will improve?

That's the wrong take on Jack imo. He's 6-1, now at 245 lbs. and I don't recall ever seeing a LB pop OL like this guy does. All the time, every tape I've watched. Just watch this film vs Virginia, or better yet go to 3:54 to see what this guy does:

All the time. Now combine that with pass rush and coverage ability. And he was a good RB for UCLA. Any LB position across the board, he can help us in a big way. Tim Bowens helped Zach Thomas to run free and raise hell at MLB. Suh and maybe Phillips can help Jack do the same, or he'd be great at WILL or SAM. Doesn't matter where you put him, the coaches can scheme around him and he can just play, period. Dude is that good and that special.

He's listed at 6'1 230. Let's go with that. It's WLB size. Bulking up to play a different position can cause issues, see Jordan, Dion. If you want to ignore that, cool.
Let's not pretend the NFL is college. It's about the money. Jack can play WLB for 10 years or he can play MLB or Sam for 5-6 years. Which do you think he'd prefer? Lamar Miller can be a 12-15 carry guy for 10 years or carry the load for 5 years. I'd hate to see Jack slamming into pulling guardo when he's physically designed to chase plays down from the back side.
Suh is a disruptive force. He's not trying to eat blocks like Bowens and Gardner so some other guy can get all the credit. Watching last season showed me as much.
And let's be honest. If you can't rush the Passer or line up and blanket WRs on the outside then it doesn't matter who you have at LB, offenses will scheme ways to dissect your defense.2socks likes this. -
not sure where your getting you measurement, he's over 6'1 and he's at 245..
and I don't want him to play the mike, never said that..I want him to play where I get the most out of his athleticism...the dude loves taking on guys 50lbs heavier, its in his nature and he's very good at it..great at multiple things..no glaring weaknesses.. -
I've seen him listed at 6'1 245. I've seen him listed at 6'1 230. Depends on the source. In my experience, guys tend to be smaller than advertised. He wouldn't be the first guy to bulk up for a combine when his actual playing weight is somewhat lower.
Overall point remains the same. DE and CB needs over LB, especially for this current team. Address that if you dont mind. WADR I'm not interested in your personal feelings. -
We don't agree on his role or impact level when he reaches the NFL. Im thinking Thomas Davis or Lavonte David. Good, good players. Still, when you're weak at CB and DE can you afford to go that route?jim1 likes this.
