Yeah it's almost a consensus. Very few people have a problem with the pick. The player itself seems to be highly regarded and thought as a 16 game solid starter from day one as a rookie.

The issue is the team more than likely left a high pick on the table and until someone comes with some evidence that another team in the 20s had strong indication of wanting to draft James, I have to be disappointed with not getting max value from the pick.

I haven't heard any evidence of there being a trade partner in pursuit of our #19 pick, so why assume there was, which is also assuming we left a high pick on the table?

 

It's going to be amazing to me if a dumb mother****er like Mike Pouncey gets out of his rookie contract without getting suspended for something.

 

Because Hickey himself said he was in discussion, they used their entire time allotment and 2 of the next 3 teams traded? Don't be the target of a Warren Sapp tweet :tongue2:

 

Except Hickey himself said they got calls for trades and they decided to stay put. There's also the fact that NO and Cleveland traded up withing 3 picks after the Dolphins pick.

There is more evidence for a possible trade opportunity than there is of some other team coveting James in the 20s.

To me, we need a LG as badly, they mention he can play RG meaning the long list of equally good RT prospects still on the board should be in play. Suspect we do go "pure" G the next pick. James was taken b/c they feel he can start quickly not due to overwhelming physical talent

 

I honestly dont get why everyone is so bent out of shape over the possibility that MAYBE we could have gotten another pick and traded down. One, yes, it appears there was a trade partner. But, who knows what the trade offered was.

Maybe it was a 4th or a 5th...you dont know. And they NEEDED a RT. They went and got the best RT in the draft. What if he turns into a Pro Bowl RT. Would anyone complain?

They had conviction on getting a player they wanted, and from every account I have read, sounds like an absolute stud at RT.

I think ya'll are so wrapped up in thinking you know how to draft better then a professional GM does, that you wayyyy over analyze everything to minutia.

If we go TE and DB - We need interior players on the O-Line, they gave up pressure last year too!

If we go OL and RB - We need D players too, we didn't stop the rush last year and don't know what we have in 2nd year CBs!

CB and OG - Can we trust our RBs?! Moreno is the only proven player and has a 1 year contract!

WR and OLB - We have all this $ in our WR and LB's, they aren't good enough??!?!

 

Overview

With a school-record 49 consecutive starts for the Volunteers, James is more fundamentally sound than talented junior left tackle Antonio "Tiny" Richardson and offers a similar package of size and athleticism.

James' get-it-done attitude is reflected by a career that began as a starter when he arrived in 2010. Forty-nine games, 49 starts and one Bachelor's Degree later (December 2013), he is ready to take his study on the Arts and Sciences to the NFL. But it will be his size, strength and lateral quickness that serve him well at the next level. Seems to make pre-snap reads well but sometimes misses stunts.

James has the mentality and physicality to step in and perform immediately in the NFL. He was impressive at Senior Bowl before spraining knee, but was fine at his April Pro Day.

STRENGTHS: Alert and comfortable at right tackle. Recognizes stunts and line games. Surprising initial quickness, lateral agility and flexibility for his monstrous frame. Powerful and competitive with grit to knock defenders off the ball and continue downfield. Plays to dominate one-on-one battles, letting his hands to the work with good body control. Can slide to protect the edge against the variety of speed rushers faced in the SEC. Technically sound, maintains position to mirror. Surprisingly light feet, natural power and quickness off the ball. Could play guard.
WEAKNESSES: Because of his massive frame, pad level is a constant battle. Drops his head when run blocking, an easy target for swim moves. Gets over his feet when on the run, "brushing" opponents to maintain course downfield.

Analysis

Strengths: Surprisingly quick off the snap, showing the ability to slide to protect the edge against the variety of speed rushers he has faced in the SEC. Plays on the balls of his feet but with his knees bent and his butt down, putting him good position to shuffle laterally as well as anchor against a quality bull-rush. Surprisingly light feet also stand out while run-blocking, as does his competitive spirit.

Powerful at the point of attack and can drive defenders off the ball. Not shy about peeling off of them to target would-be tacklers at the second level, as well. A plug and play candidate, James looks like a solid bet to crack the first 100 picks of the 2014 draft.

Weaknesses: Like most blockers with his frame, James occasionally struggles with pad level. When he drops his head, he can be beaten with a swim move over the top. This occurs most often while run blocking.

And yes...I have a bad feeling that Pouncey just won't change his ways, and we pick up his 5th year on his contract? Good grief. Where there's smoke there's fire.

The breaks a guy like that gets enable him to double down on the dumb. I'm afraid the Dolphins will regret picking up that guy's option. I hope not, but that guy can't be seen as a leader by any definition if you have a functional organization.

Didn't Goodell say that Pouncey is required to go through psychological evaluation before he's reinstated? I just don't understand Pouncey, why would you add more fuel to the fire... this isn't college, and it's definitely not a joke anymore..

Hickey is the new kid on the block. He add 31 other GMs ringing to find out if he was Matt Millen mark II. Until he establishes some credibility in the league no one is going to offer him real value for a trade.
