As for Egnew, we'll see, it's not just how to compete it is how to function in a very complex NFL offense with very few reps, once the season starts one is expected to know that stuff already.

 

People bag on Tony Sparano, BUT one thing I thought he was really good at explaining was the importance of reps in training camp and at practices, the coaches really don't have time to hold a professionals hand to relearn what they just showed them.

Add in teammates calling him a *****, more or less, Mr Egnew has a steep uphill climb to make the roster let alone see playing time.

 

Cameron Marshall played in a running back by committee last year in Arizona State's new offense, but he's a decent looking back who runs with impressive authority for a 5'9, 211 pounder. Had 36 rushing TDs the past 3 years, including 18 in 2011.

somewhat... but it was 4.8 the 2 years before the scheme change which is at least a little better.
He took a big hit in the redzone with 32 carries at a 1.9 YPC.... although 25% of those went for TDs.
In 2011, he had 53 redzone carries at 3.4 YPC with 26% going for TDs, so that seems like the difference.

FWIW, between the 20's he averaged 5.35 YPC in 2011 and 6.4 in 2010.
Still a longshot.... but he has some intrigue to him.

 

With the lack of talented depth at safety, I don't see them not being able to find a roster spot for Kovacs who's going to be a beast on special teams as well.

Size is a waist if your packing nothing but muscle between the ears. Egnew is missing the head game. As a fan, there is no doubt I am rooting for the kid but as of this moment, a toaster is more valuable to the team. It can produce heat to carbs that provide energy for practice. Egnew has neither produced nor provided anything in practice or otherwise.

Would love for Marshall to replace Thomas and move Thomas for whatever he can garner.

And don't worry about Jones extension. it will come. They probably just want to see his level of play continue.

The MMA stuff is interesting to me with respect to Egnew. Richie Incognito has done it. Accroding to my PFW Draft Guide, Dion Jordan said he had been working with Jay Glazer and Chuck Liddell (this was prior to the Draft, so I don't know if he's still doing it now - I'd imagine he had to shutdown for a while due to labrum surgery), but that's interesting to me as well. Surely, it might help his hand use in terms of pass-rushing.

Also, as to Reshad Jones, this is from January, and I think Armando tweeted it out earlier in the 2012 season, so if true, Miami had at one point talked contract with Jones. Obviously, I hope this gets done, but if Brian Hartline is an indication, it appears Miami will wait until after the season. Clemons, Jones, Soliai, and Starks are all free agents after 2013 - Ireland and Aponte have some work to do.

Not surprised Jordan Kovacs and Cameron Marshall have impressed. I shouldn't be surprised Jasper Collins has impressed. He moves quite well when you're not being physical in coverage. But at Shrine practice when they allowed the DBs to be physical, he wilted like lettuce under a heat lamp.

 

His strength and ability on the goal line are the reasons I consistently had him on my short list for UDFAs should my draft board end up exhausted by the end of the draft (which it wasn't). Chad Bumphis was on that list too.

But I will say this. From a pure talent standpoint, if Jonas Gray is healthy he should blow Cameron Marshall away. It shouldn't be close. Gray is entering the 2nd year off his ACL surgery. That's usually the year players feel like they're 'back'.

 

It's surprising that Cameron Marshall has impressed early. He's clearly a big back and AFAIK we haven't been in pads yet. Usually it's the small, quick types that impress during the conditioning part of camp.

 

Michael Egnew probably had to swallow a lot of pride to accept doing some MMA work because it entails recognizing what everyone views his weakness to be, which is his being physically soft and not competitive. I would think most people if confronted with that accusation would be more inclined to be defensive and claim people don't know what they're talking about. Instead he went to MMA training to get tougher. But then, maybe that's what a soft guy without a backbone WOULD do, lol.

I have Gray being a Ray Rice type back .... he should show very well this year, which was why I was not worried about RB in the draft with both Miller and Gray.

We did need a 'bigger' back ... and don't see Gillislee as 'that' guy, and neither is Thomas (who should be lucky to make this team out of camp).

Between Miller, Gray and Gillislee ... we will have no problems running the rock.

 

Mentally more so than physically. His combine you may recall was about equal to your boy Eifert's. So to me Egnew needed to improve physically no more than the typical rookie. His problems were 99% between the ears IMO.

 

Well, with fortune maybe he duplicates Jimmy Graham's second season.

Do agree that physically, he's above avg, it is more football IQ.

Just dawned on me one of the Thomas' real problems is he is a Sparano holdover, he may not be Philbin's cup of tea, he seems a bit taller then the other Rb's they've brought in since Philbin arrived.

 

He seems like a humble kid with a no quit mentality. IMO this was more about the initial transition to the NFL being particularly difficult in Egnew's case coming from an offense where he was listed as a tight end but played more like a slot receiver, then coming to the NFL where he'd actually have to become a tight end (mentally learning the position and physically being able to handle the load). It's demanding enough making the jump from college tight end to NFL tight end (as we routinely see players needing a year or two to mature into effective contributors), but I imagine it's significantly more rigorous making the jump from college slot receiver/Hback to NFL tight end, putting Egnew behind the curve right out the gate. It's not like he played soft in college; most of us have seen his impressive bruising runs after the catch and physically beating defenders to make a grab, so hopefully this was nothing more than Egnew needing some time to transition and make himself NFL ready b/c he has talent measurables comparable to some of the game's best tight ends.

I always go back to this below run after the catch clip to remind myself Egnew perhaps does possess an underlying toughness to him. And I agree; I like that he kept his mouth shut, swallowed him pride, and went to work in hopes of reaching the same level in the NFL he did in college. Seems he understands the play on the field speaks for itself.

If you're talking about probability of making the team how can you not say Gillislee has a leg up on an UDFA?

Me neither. Other than both being running backs who are black, I see very few similarities to Ray Rice.

 

It's safe to say the staff had a higher opinion of Gillislee leading up to the draft and I'm pretty sure they've seen both players youtube highlights and much, much more. As for the videos, running vs USC, Wazzu and Oregon St. is a wee bit easier than running vs LSU, Georgia and Florida St, no?

 

And Clemson can't stop anyone. Do you guys even recruit defensive players :lol:?
