too early to think about for me..I suppose all options are open, depending on who falls to us in the draft.

 

I don't think those are the only options. For example, if Cutler plays as well as Tannehill (or better), I'd drop Tannehill but still draft a QB high, with no pressure to play him immediately.

Either way, I agree with dj that it's too early to decide because we don't know how well Cutler/Moore plays.

 

This would seem more like an "RT" decision, regardless of MM, JC or any future draft picks, this comes down to, do you bet on RT.

A couple things to weigh, 5 years in and he still hasn't proved he's the man, and now he has 2 knee injuries to his plant leg.

Will these injuries have a neutral, positive or negative effect, the possibilities of a negative effect is high, will it take, as it often does, a season to readjust? Then he's 31 and we're still trying to find out if he's the guy?

We aren't sitting on the next ARod, that much is very clear, so how much more time and money is it worth investing in a 30 year old avg QB?

That is the question that needs to be answered, other QB factors shouldn't factor into the "RT" equation, they need to make a decision on RT, based on RT alone imo.

 

Going into next season, Tannehill will be a 30 year old QB who has never played in a playoff game and will be coming off a major leg injury.

So basically Gase needs to accept that they need to draft a, "quarterback of the future" in the 2018 draft. I have no idea if Tannehill will be on the Dolphins roster next year but I doubt he will still be the starting QB for the Dolphins two years from now.

 

Up until this month, I was 100% totally in on RT being our QB for at least the next five years or more. However, given his knee, I now feel that the team needs to hedge their bets, and probably draft a QB in the second round next April if there's one available and worth the pick when our turn comes up. If RT is healthy and in top form in 2018, then we have a backup for a few seasons, and maybe a trade chip down the line. If he's not, then the younger guy can be groomed to take over in 2019 if need be.

 

Tannehill isn't going to be the answer. That ship has sailed with the combination of a new coach than the one who drafted him and this knee injury. We're going to be drafting a QB high, most likely. If one doesn't drop to us, I see us trading up for one.

 

I think circumstances will play a huge role in how we handle this situation over this season. I expect a lot of overreacting from both sides....How Cutler plays will be the core of these reactions.
With that said, Quarterbacks have a long shelf life in the NFL and it's not uncommon for them to get dramatically better in their early to mid and even late 30s, so giving up on Tannehill altogether would be an overreaction.
Unless there just happens to be a prodigal poet of a quarterback in this upcoming draft class (that we can draft), I see no reason why Tannehill can't come back a more mature starting QB next season. I could name a lot of quarterbacks over the last 15 years that were much better in their 30s then they were in their 20s.

 

The problem with knee injuries is sometimes the QB takes a year or two to come back to form. Not always. But Carson Palmer wasn't the same for a while. Heck Tom Brady didn't have a stellar 2009. Time will tell.

 

Is the survey what I think we should do.....or is it what do I think the front office will do? Because those are two very different things when there are still 17+ games between now and then. Teams have short memories and I wouldn't be shocked to see RT as a free agent.

Me personally though? We need to draft the QB of our future ASAP. Even if RT comes back perfect in 2018 and plays awesome, he has what- maybe 4-6 years left? And Moore has maybe a few seasons? We need a stud in the wings now.

 

If a combination of perennial backup Matt Moore and 34 y/o comeback kid Jay Cutler even closely matches what Tannehill did under Gase, that tells you everything you need to know about Tannehill's value to the organization.

We can't keep wondering year after year after year about potential. I think we've seen what he's capable of. Now his knee is messed up and we can get rid of him with very little dead money left on his contract. It's time to cut bait.

Of course the organization needs to see how this year plays out, but I'm of the belief that it's imperative we draft a QB in round one or two in next year's draft regardless of what happens.

The Dolphins need to keep an eye toward longevity and sustained long term success with a core nucleus of young players sprinkled with veterans, but the quarterback position is long overdue for someone pushing Ryan Tannehill for playing time.

We know what we have with Tannehill, with both his positive and negative points. We also know that we'll have a QB possibly coming back next year that will have not taken a snap in almost two years. That doesn't inspire confidence, but rather hoping or praying that he suffers no setbacks and can still play with a modicum of efficiency pre-injury.

To me, Ryan Tannehill is a gamble at this point. I'm not gambling or mortgaging the future of the Dolphins on supposition. We need a young quarterback that can be groomed in Gase's system and to lead this franchise.

 

We have options. Thats all that matters. And we should have cap room too

A couple of weeks ago we were remembering how great Tannehill looked under Gase and pondering how things would come together this season. Now we're forgetting Tannehill because we've got Cutler, and that before he's played a single game or made it through the season unscathed.

Geez guys, I know it's the off-season but come on, can't we just focus on the season in front of is that hasn't even started yet, and let the doctors do with Tannehill what they will. Then we'll see how things look?

 

I think a lot of you overestimate how old 29 going on 30 is. He will be 100% next year most likely and 30 is not old. Prime QB years.

30 is young enough that you have around 7 more years of him playing at full strength and all the more wise with a competent coach who by all accounts loves him.

If we get rid of Tannehill it will be because another great option presents itself, not because he sucks or he's old and damaged goods.

I doubt this coaching staff is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to shove him to the curb like most of you ingrates.

 

You've been stuck, I haven't. I've seen the talent since his rookie year.

I've been waiting for a good team around him. I've been waiting for a coaching staff that looks like it actually belongs in the NFL. I've been waiting for an Oline and running game to help alleviate the pressure on him.

 

It is crazy to even have this conversation. This absolutely has to play itself out. Here are just a few scenarios that could play out:

Jay Culter's resurgence
Dolphins tank and Sam Darnold is on the clock when we are drafting
Dolphins do fairly well and get a late(r) first round pick and all top tier QBs are off the board.
A team offers us a particularly good trade for RT.

 

I voted Tannehill will be here but draft a QB early.. By early I mean round 3 or 4, not the first round pick unless we **** the bed and someone like Rosen is available.
