Here's the thing though- 2 of those 4 winning seasons were the past two years. And the other was a year removed from when we blew everything up for Flores/Grier. So we lose, lose, lose, then finally win and fire everyone so we can go back to losing.

But here's the much bigger problem. We start over every three years. Not in slight tweaks, but blowing the whole roster up with a new vision, a new direction. Three years is not enough in most cases to build any sort of consistency. I mean, look at today's roster- no line, only 1 reliable receiver, no RB. Those pieces get added next year and who knows how long it takes to click. We can't keep blowing stuff up just because someone has a slick sales pitch.

I agree. We don't do it with any consistency. That is something that has really bothered me; not using Gesicki enough. Imo. it has really bordered on criminal negligence. He as good as it gets in that department. It's insane.

 

The problem is, is that he’s not going to sell (unless his other ventures fail) - he already has a succession plan in place for when Sauron calls him back to Mordor.

 

Chris Grier and Stephen Ross are the NFL's version of Dark Helmet and President Skroob. I might have to Photoshop their faces into a scene from Spaceballs.

 

They're not going to blow it up this time. We actually have a lot of key players to build on. Also, no one is going to convince Ross/Grier that the defense should be blown up. That's why I'm more optimistic this time around. It's not a complete rebuild. Question is whether we get the right coaches (plural). Also, whoever the next coach is has no excuse in year 1. He needs a winning record right off the bat.

Here's the thing though- its not a rebuild today. But if we suck next year, what do we do when X wants to go to a contender? The entire defense collapses without two shutdown corners. So even if we only lose two or three pieces, that defense isn't going to be the same. I already doubt that we can run cover zero under a new coach because it's so technical.

The other side to that is Tua and the offensive line. Can we figure that out in one off-season? Two off-seasons? Three years absolutely flies by. And if Tua doesn't make major strides, then what? Call it another 6-year RT experiment? Ditch him and revamp the entire offense? We're already installing a new offense next year anyway, which means more growing pains.

Ultimately, I'd like to see Tua start in the same offense with the same pieces for three full seasons. But that's the same thing I wanted to see with Tannehill as well, and Henne before him. Consistency is such a huge factor for players, staff, etc and we've never come even close to having that. It is a critical part of development.

 

Consistency is important unless you're consistently mediocre, which has been the history of the Dolphins the last 20 years.

The worst is on offense, not just under Flores but under all previous coaches last 20 years. We haven't been top 10 in points scored in 20 years, and in 13 of those 20 years we were ranked #20 or worse! So there's no reason to ask for consistency on offense.

The MOST important thing to get right in the offseason is getting the right coaches on offense: either we get a great offensive HC or we get a great OC and OL coach. If that means Tua plays in a different offense, or we ditch Tua altogether so be it. Our offense has been pathetic. No need to ask for consistency there.

 

And how about a ****ing crossing route?? I feel like we never throw those.

 

Yeah...and we suck at screens. I've been harping on that for years. I thought Duke could be good in that department, but...

 

How many times did we see two receivers (and three defenders) in the same area this season? I'm convinced that a lot of Tua's dinks and dunks were necessary because downfield receivers were bringing their defenders toward other receivers. I'm surprised I don't remember any PI calls for picks. We had some head scratching route trees and play calls this year and I'm not sad to see GodStud follow Flo out the door.

Unless we retain Boyer or bring back Graham (who likely will be out in NYC after Judge got canned), I'd be surprised to see us run the same defense. The Pats system is pretty specific and insular to them.

Defensive coaching will be important - our defense had some high highs, but it was usually against middle of the pack to bad teams. Against the elite we often struggled and overall lacked consistency. If we end up with a Dan Quinn or Dennis Allen that would take care of that. But if we end with a Daboll or McDaniel then I hope they can entice a stud DC to make their way over here.

 

Yeah, Buffalo got two for the price of one. Figured out the Pats defense by design and our derivative scheme by consequence.
