I've heard his name pronounced numerous ways by our "wonderful" announcers. Anyone know how its supposed to said?

My only concern is Fede's speed for DE position.

Yes srs, because he looks like an interior lineman when you watch him move, not a DE.

His speed is one of his best qualities. Especially for 270 lb guy.

I remember him going off the field in the 4th with an injury during the Bucs game. It didn't look serious at all. He was walking ok. Anyone have any info?

He runs as good as some starting linebackers

 

I don't know about the linebacker bit, but he's got good speed for a 4-3 defensive end. He's built well for that job as well.

Nobody ought be comparing him to a Dion Jordan type linebacker though, IMO.

We're talking about a guy with 4.76 speed. The Phil Merling mold.

I think if someone's bringing up his speed deficiency that would probably relative to productive 4-3 speed rushers such as our very own Cameron Wake, or a Jerry Hughes, Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney or Cliff Avril.

He's just not in that mold. If he's going to be successful, that's not going to be how he does it. More along the lines of a Cameron Jordan (who is awesome).

 

I think Margus Hunt is in the midst of teaching me that I should never doubt physical superiority in a defensive lineman unless the player looks physically weak or non-committal on the field.

Even if the dude is already a 27 year old NFL sophomore.

 

If he really takes care and works on his body he could get better.

One thing that Fede has surprised me with is his ability to sniff out screen passes.

Shows he has some football smarts and instincts.

 

You're going to accuse me of being pedantic or argumentative, and perhaps you'd even be right to do so, but I don't know that I would refer to that as instincts or football smarts.

It's more what Joe Philbin stated, which is that Fede is detail-oriented. Part of his explicit position responsibility on a lot of plays is to read the back and react to what he's doing. He knows that's his responsibility and so he's going to fulfill that responsibility. It's like Maverick in the aerial exercise Goose died absolutely. refusing. to leave. his wingman. because he had already got yelled at for leaving his wingman and freelancing.

I think where a guy shows instincts or football smarts is when he runs into a gray area. There was a play where that happened and the QB rolled out to his side, and that becomes a little bit of a gray area because he can attack the quarterback or he can stay out in the flat trying to make sure no receivers are going to be easy outlets for the rolling passer to hit. The right answer isn't either one, it's kind of both. When that happened he just looked kind of hesitant, a little awkward, angles that you're not used to seeing a guy in that situation take, timing that you're not used to seeing a guy in that situation display...etc.

Other gray areas and opportunities to display your football acumen or instincts include choice of pass rush maneuver, setting guys up, reading tendencies on the field or reading their leverage during their kick step. Right now he's a little bit one-note that way, as well.
