I'm excited as the next about last night, and I know that it's only one extra point missed but there has to be a better kicker available than Andrew Franks. His season long is what, 41 yards?
Who is available right now?

Some of the bigger names: Shayne Graham, Mike Nugent, Blair Walsh, Josh Scobee, Josh Brown.
These guys are all free agents for a reason, and I'm not sure cutting a player after missing one PAT would send a positive message to the team. Franks doesn't have much of a leg, but he's money within 40-yards. The same can't be said for plenty of starting NFL kickers.
However, I fully, completely, 100% support drafting or signing competition for Franks in the offseason. Just not right now.gunn34 and bigballa2102 like this. -

There is a dude that kicked for WKU, I forget his name, but long German name I believe. That dude seemed to never miss anything. I don't know why no one has picked him up, he might not have the 60 yard long FG range, but if you want a money guy 45 and in and on XP, he would be a good pick up.

Couldn't agree more. All season when Miami gets into normal FG kicker range, the announcers start talking about Frank not having a strong leg and that Miami needs to get it closer. Just not smart to handicap special teams with a kicker like Franks. There are much better options out there.

It's that the first PAT he's missed?
Could be worse, could be Sturgis or Carpenter. -

It would be tough to gather the info, but I'd like to know how many drives Miami had that stalled within the range where a competent kicker could have attempted a long kick. How many drives did Miami just say, "**** it." and take a 5 yard delay of game and punt because their kicker has a wet noodle for a leg? How many points lost on drives like that?resnor and Aqua4Ever04 like this. -
I don't think anyone can convince me Franks is better than Shayne Graham. Graham may not have the strongest leg, but he has a career 85.5% conversion rate.

I was a supporter of Franks last year, and into this season, but the team clearly has no faith in him. I thought that last year's numbers might be a fluke, but after we set a franchise record for fewest FG attempts last season, we're set to have only slightly more this year.
We went from 37 with Caleb Sturgis (hardly an excellent, reliable guy himself), to 16 last year, and then 18 so far this year. Since 1990 (when sortable stats like this begin), our lowest total was 21, in 2001, and its been over 30 almost every year, to give an indication of just how few FGs we've tried with Franks.
We need to bring in a reliable veteran for next year. That doesn't mean trying to get one of the best. Just a guy that we can count on.resnor likes this. -

Okay, let me get this straight...
We've won 8 of our last 9
Some of these games we've won by a mere field goal...kicked by Franks no less
And some of you are arguing we need a better KICKER? How about we focus more on better talent on the offensive line...so when we have a Pouncy or Albert or someone else go down, we don't struggle to get the ball into the endzone....end drives with TD's instead of FG attempts?
The place kicker is the LONELIEST position on a football team. When the offense fails to deliver, the entire weight of a game is placed on his shoulders. He either becomes the hero or the heel so I ask, is it really fair?

Kicker needs to be a position where the guy hits everything...he's automatic. Look at NE, they went from Vinatieri to Gostkowski. If you don't have a guy that can kick from 45-50 yards with consistency, you need to keep looking.
Doesn't mean it's the number one priority, but kicker definitely needs to be a priority.RGF likes this. -
But is it actually true? Franks hold the D-III record for the longest FG and while that is only 53 yards this is what Rizzi said about attempting a 70-yard FG.
It depends on the conditions and all that,” Rizzi said. “I’ve seen [Franks] in warmups kick 64-yarders in the middle of the field. Again, he does have a strong leg. We actually tried a 64-yarder in practice yesterday that had about five or six yards left on it. Again, depending on the situation and depending on the conditions and all that stuff … last play of the half, last play of the game, things like that.

This is after the same game that Franks reached the end zone on a ko that was pushed back 15-yards for a penalty. I'm all for upgrading any position on the team but I really doubt there is a street FA kicker out there that doesn't have their own set of issues. -
Well, the truth is, the coaches don't have him kicking field goals a whole lot.
There has to be a reason.Unlucky 13 likes this. -
Franks is consistently launching kickoffs out of the back of the end zone, so this isn't a question of leg strength. He's just not kicking that often and our team is not gambling on turning the ball over with good field position. Just because you think a guy can hit from 65 doesn't mean you actually have him try it.

We win the Seattle game week one with a better kicker who put any kind of loft on that short kick he got blocked. Franks literally could be why we miss the playoffs if we can not win these next two weeks.resnor likes this. -

Franks is unreliable from just about any distance. He's a below average kicker by today's NFL standards.
-
Frank's ****ing sucks.
Kicker is a huge problem when he's not dependable from 45. -

Who knew our better kicker than Franks was..... wait for it..... a BETTER Franks? I hope the kid can carry this game forward and make some more clutch kicks for us.
-
Not to make excuses, however, looks like the wind was hard to judge this game on those 40 yard kicks.
