Clutch throw because we REALLY needed it at the moment. Titan fans began to slowly exit their building after that happened.

Was a perfect throw but I can't stress how important it can be to have a receiver that can do what Kenny did on that play.
Here's the reason I say that. If you notice Blidi Wreh-Wilson's coverage on the play, it was actually good. He didn't **** up. This is the NFL, not college. In college guys will make an attempt to jam you at the line and end up whiffing and now you have a free outside release while still having the chance to maintain cushion between you and the sidelines, and it all looks very pretty. This didn't look pretty because Wreh-Wilson knows he has help to the inside, starts reading Kenny Stills' outside release right away, and he's squeezing the hell out of Kenny using the sideline as the 12th man. He's also using his NFL starting corner caliber 4.39 speed (not to mention 6'1" frame) to keep up with Kenny Stills, who has a disadvantage because he's being squeezed so far to the sideline that he's got a longer track to run.
But you know what? It doesn't matter. Kenny Stills (who has 4.32 speed) is just that fast and good at tracking the ball. There's no hesitation, he keeps running straight through it at full speed because he can track the football well enough to know that's what he needs to do. I see guys slow up then speed back up all the time, downshifting to give their eyes a chance to locate the ball then upshifting when they realize the QB laid it out for him to run under.
The play really shows what an asset Kenny Stills can be. He's under-utilized but part of that is because Miami has some other good players, Rishard Matthews being one of them.keypusher, P h i N s A N i T y, DevilFin13 and 18 others like this. -
Out of his own end zone. Impressive throw right there.

Those that say this wasn't a deep ball are...well I don't want to offend anyone so I won't say it harshly. Suffice it to say you're wrong.
It doesn't matter what measure you choose to designate whether it was a deep ball or not. The ball hits Stills about 26 yards vertically beyond the line of scrimmage, about 34 yards vertically from where Tannehill threw the thing, and traveled around 41-42 yards through the air on a high arc against single-high man coverage.
You won't find a single coach that decides to labor the point on whether that was a "deep ball" or not. Schematically it was a deep ball in that it was exactly what you do when you have a speedster in your arsenal and the defense decides to play him in press-man with single-high coverage. Mechanically it was a deep ball, as Ryan Tannehill pointed his front shoulder upward and lofted the ball on an arc. Distance-wise it was a deep ball, as the ball crossed 41-42 yards of distance in the air. Seriously there isn't a single test this doesn't pass when it comes to designating whether this qualifies as a "deep ball", unless you just start making up tests that have no significance in reality.Alex13, brandon27, eltos_lightfoot and 8 others like this. -

Ryan also didn't hesitate and trusted his wr. As CK pointed out, Stills was well covered on this play. No one would have blamed tannehill for not throwing at stills here, but he throws a pin point deep ball anyway because he trusts stills.
He never trusted our past "speedster". You could see it in the timing -
It's plays like that that prevent safeties from cheating up. Cause if that safety doesn't make it over, Kenny Stills takes that for a 97 yard TD.

If you're a defense, it's scary that you got burned for that because it REALLY limits what you can do if you decide that you can't play that way anymore.PhinFan1968 likes this. -

Maybe Im wrong, but I dont think I am.....
I think you may have seen the effect of Al Saunders there. Chris Chambers was talking about what Al Saunders was like last week on Finsiders and said he teaches Qbs on throwing the deep ball to a WR...you let the WR get 10 yards off the LOS and then Let it Go....you dont wait for them to get open, you let them run under it.
Unless Im mistaken...Stills is pretty damn close to 10 yards off the LOS when Tannehill throws it....he doesnt try to hit Stills as much as he just puts some air under it and lets Stills run under it in stride.brandon27, MAFishFan, 407PhinFan and 3 others like this. -

It did seem to me that Tannehill let this one go a little bit earlier than he would have last year. It looked more like the passes we saw from training camp. Putting this on tape will help the offense IMO.cuchulainn, Fin D and ckparrothead like this. -

How does Wallace look on deep balls again this season? -
In an Offense in which he is featured, Wallace is averaging 5 catches per game, 58.3 ypg, .25 TD
He's on pace for 80 catches, 932 yards, 12.5 ypc, 4 TDs.
By comparison, and as a role player, Stills is currently averaging 2.5 cpg, 36.8 ypg, .25 TD
Translates to about 40 catches, 589 yards, 13.8 ypc, 4 TDs
Stills could easily surpass any game by Wallace if he were featured or targeted as often.
Also, TeddyB has thrown 3 TDs and 4 INTs this season. Yes, you read that correctly. My best friend is a Vikes fan. I'm loving it. lol...P h i N s A N i T y and resnor like this. -

Now Rishard Matthews, since he's Miami's leading receiver:
23/32 for 363 yards, 15.8 YPC, 11.3 YPT, 3 TDs, 6 20+ yards receptions (over 25% of his catches)...longest reception from Ryan (couldn't throw a deep ball to save his life, particularly in a clutch moment) Tannehill.....48 yards.
So Wallace's numbers are lower than they were at Miami in all areas...and Matthews' numbers are higher than Wallace's the whole time he was in Miami.
DEFINITELY the QB. -
I gotta admit, after the Grimes pick, and being at the 2 yard line, my thought on first down was to just run it straight up the gut and get some breathing room. I love the aggression. Perfect throw from Tannehill and a good job by Stills getting open.
Two tremendous plays back-to-back. One on defense and one on offense. Had me feeling like...

Nah. Campbell taught him how to throw deep during the bye week, he also taught Cam Wake how to rush the QB. Guy is a genius I tell you.

this is exactly how aaron rogers does it..
this is something ive been specific about when it came to ryan and the deep ball topic, ive said many times, stop worrying about arch and velocity, just see it quickly and throw it on your natural plane...
your observation is spot on here VT..
that throw is a fairly easy throw for an NFL qb if he has good arm talent, as long as he's just trusting his release and not adjusting arch or velocity, he can make that throw in any situation..and I say that because this is a different throw that VT just pointed out..
Beautiful. Just plain beautiful.
