Hate that they are going Dome - that is not retractable. But, this quote was interesting:
This is exactly what is wrong in Miami and one of the core reasons the Dolphins are not going to get the SB no matter what kind of package they get.
But, Vikes are going with a roof because the citizens wanted to have the SB there and other events. Understand that. Still wish they could have had some way to open the roof for the field to get snow.
But, at least the Vikes get two years in U of M's stadium and that will be outside. Should be awesome in December!
Any ideas on whether Ross will make another run at stadium upgrades in the off-season?

that's an owner that gets it..from what we've seen transpire over the years in terms of evidence of a real home field advantage, for an owner to not capitalize on it, is pure stupidity.good for him, the vikes and their fans are very lucky.
sean payton..
Yeah..just open your mind and think about that one..
fan performance is the next evolution in creating an edge..
It seems like whoever is in charge of this for us does not get it, and its a shame, there are ways to challenge our own to at least try to help with the disadvantage our building puts us in.
as far as updates...nothing, nada, he said back in august that he would give tallahasse another run, but that's it..
the mistakes are littered all over in how he's playing this, especially from a business oppurtunity, and also the city officials of Miami who are against it, they are all not progressive enough in their thinking.
first off, city of Miami officials?, how many superbowls do you have to lose to get it in your fat heads that you are going to lose money in the long run?...its just simple math and common sense..for them it was an investment of about 175mill roughly, you've already lost two bids..math 101...your going to lose more..
2nd..the money that the Viking owner will make by building a stadium catered to the experience the 12 th man will create will eventually pay for itself..math 101...its an investment for the future of the fan experience, and the best way to make people come to the building and spend their money? is to make them part of the competitive edge..brilliant yes?
3rd...we not only have 1 program suffering a culture crisis, we have two..if our owner was smart enough, and understood the concept, he would make the money back on two programs for the price of one, anyone that knows anything about our two cultures knows the venue and the beginning of the 12 th man came from US!!
All you have to do is build it, and they will come from all over to experience it, if, it is built with intimidation and intimacy, into the spec...alongside a campaign that will make your fandom explode..
The changes that he purposed to sunlife were good, the awning, the color change to the seats, the slight adjustments to some of the seats, however, if he were to just go for it himself, or get a group to go in with him, everyone related in two different programs would benefit, monetarily, competively, and culturally, the long term benefits are off the charts with this concept...
you know what I always wonder Dfin, if this venue could somehow go public in terms of a stock...I know I would buy.ToddPhin, Unlucky 13, Kud_II and 3 others like this. -

Domes suck. I understand the reason for them obviously, but football should be played in the elements.

Great, great stuff, DJ. Well said.
And, I completely concur that domes suck. Hate them. I cannot and will not abide watching a regular season game in a dome (can't tolerate games in New Orleans or Atlanta or Detroit).
Really wish there were some way they'd have built the stadium in Minnesota to have the field in the elements - at least during the game.
I even don't have an issue with it outside for the SB in the elements. Obviously you don't want the SB to have 10 inches of snow. But, I think you could have a much more closed in stadium (more like Texas Stadium used to be) and still play the game there where it wasn't overwhelming.djphinfan likes this. -

Seriously, we all love December football, and playoff football. Where a lot of games are played in tough weather. It adds so much more excitement to the game. I think they should be doing cold weather Super Bowls more often.

I like the elements. This past Sunday was awesome. But I also think a line can be drawn. Minnesota is the kind of place where it can be so bitterly cold and windy that it can actually detract from the game
One thing I really don't like are domes in warmer climates. NO and ATL are good examples. I think the game looks like crap on TV in domes

Agree with Raf as well. That's the point of Wulf. They went around the NFL and visited stadiums to see what it was like.
New Orleans is helped because of the dome.
Seattle, because of the way the seating is set up (close to the field) and how the upper decks have a large awning over them, is an incredible stadium. It's such a great environment, I want to fly up there and go to a game just to experience the atmosphere!
Don't see why Miami can't do that with a refurbished stadium. And, an awning over the upper deck would really enhance the fans experience, keeping them out of the sun on brutal days. Of course, they do have to move the seats significantly closer. I didn't think the plan in place before was adequate. They need to re-evaluate that. -
It is such a well designed stadium for many reasons listed....
P.S. I had the pleasure of going to the TB game (biggest comeback in franchise history ; a great stadium for a game)djphinfan likes this. -
The problem I have with the refurbishing of sunlife is your never going to get the upper deck closer, and that's a major problem, because the top row of the upper deck is not only the farthest away from the field than any other stadium in sports, it also has the largest seat count of any other upperdeck in football..
The money that it would involve wouldn't be wise in relation to a new one..if your truly looking for the advantage that I'm referring to with this concept
That being said, if your trying to improve the worst advantage in the game, then the awning will help, the addition and some reshifting of some concrete to the lower bowl to add some seats and take away from the upper deck would help, the seat color change would give it a better look inside, the big screens put right into the action in the middle of the upper decks would help.. -
As to the rest, I look forward to the day in the future when all stadiums have a retractable roof. Football is best outside when its 65 and sunny, but I despise it when the elements come into play. The snow and slop make for a messy game where the best team doesn't necessarily win. Its something I live with, never something I enjoy.
And as a Fins fan, I cannot remember the last time that a Dolphins team went into a good team's home and won in cold weather, when that team was giving 100% (not benching players to rest them). Seriously, has it happened in the last 25 years? -
Talking about bad stadiums......Met Life stadium is an atrocity........its ugly as sin and all that money they spent to build that POS, and they didn't put a retractable roof on it. They would have been in the Superbowl rotation had they put a roof on it. They are throwing them a bone getting the SB this year. You wont see it there again imo.

The Bengal stadium isn't bad, I've been there a few times, it's a decent amount closer to the field that us or the panthers.. -
Maybe Ross shouldn't have bought the stadium too. He used his money to buy it, he should use his money to fix it. I can't send the FAA my truck repair bills even thought I work on aircraft.

To me, I saw first hand what a new stadium could do for the Arizona Cardinals. When they used to play at Sun Devil Stadium I was a student there, they would handout tickets to students late on game day, no joke. They averaged like 35,000+ in ASU's 73,318 whatever capacity. Blacked out games every week. They should have built near Tempe, but due to politicians they stopped workage at that location due to -flight path bs- (Dbacks later built in the flight path...) but what have you. In the end they built far out west in Glendale, a roofed state of the art facility. Packed ever since.

One team will play their asses off making it to the big stage and there's a good chance that weather will limit them...although it may make for great television, it crushes a city when their team loses to Mother Nature. Just a bad idea. -
People need to stop acting like both teams don't play in the same weather. The best two teans rarely make the Siper Bowl anyway -
Let's not forget that football is a WINTER sport and has always been played outside in the elements. People didn't cry that they were cold or wet. They sat there and rooted for there team no matter what.BigDogsHunt and steveincolorado like this. -
